Hey All! Well this has to be one of the most unique artists I've seen, much less reacted to. This was excellent, and Maria Franz is someone I need to look into more, because her vocals were insane.

Bear in mind, this was Heilung’s first live performance together as a group and Kai’s (he’s an actual shaman) first live performance ever.

The high notes Maria does is called "Kulning/Kulokk/Lalning", it is how Scandinavian herding women called in their cows from the high pastures for milking. When a call is made in a valley, it rings and echoes against the mountains. The animals, a number of whom wear bells tuned so that the livestock's location can be heard, begin to respond to the call, answering back and the sound of the bells indicates that they are moving down the mountain towards their home farm. The kulokks can belong to an individual, but are sometimes family-based and are handed down so that a family's cows know they are being called and thus respond. A number of calls contain names of individual (sometimes the "lead") animals, as herds are not very large. There is a really beautiful Swedish woman called Joana Jinton that has videos of her doing it.

The song's title can be found in the Mesogothic Anglo-Saxon glossary as "In-Maidjan", which means "deceptively change" or "corrupt". This makes sense since the entire story within the album consists of a peaceful village that is corrupted by having to go to war. Therefore, Proto-Germanic seems to be the language. Harigasti Teiwa Harigasti Teiwa "is a clear Germanic reference to the Negau helmet. This helmet contains several Etruscan alphabet inscriptions that include the words" Harigasti teiwa which are the first words of the song. This could be translated as Harigast (the priest) although it could also mean, the priest of Teiwaz (Tyr). "Harigast" is often (not always) seen as a personal name and that it could be made up of the words "harjaz" (army, troop, warband, war) and gastiz (stranger, guest). The forms "Hari" and "gast" is particularly found in west-germanic. As such the name could mean "war guest" or "foreign army". Tawol Athodu - I accept the invitation. Ek Erilaz - I am a runemaster. The word has been interpreted to mean magician or runemaster. The word is an ablaut variant of count and it is believed that it could be linguistically related to the name of the tribe of the Heruli or Herulos. The Heruli were a Germanic tribe from Scandinavia that was invaded by the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. So it is probably simply an old military title of Germanic provenance. Owlthuthewaz - owlthu (glorious) thewaz (servant). Means servant of the glorious Niwaremariz - Priest of the god "Ullr" / famous, renowned. From the proto-Germanic term Wulþuz (glory) wolþu- is possibly a reference to a God, surely the God Ullr. Saawilagar Hateka - My name is Sawilagaz. Harja - Army - leader of the army; commander; Warrior Wuotani Ruoperath Wuotani - Oh, Wodan! Ruoperath - famous and brilliant. This could be interpreted as the following: I, Priest Harigast. Aaccept the invitation (to battle) I am the Heruli. I am a renowned priest of Ullr. They call me Warrior. Oh, Wodan the famous and brilliant! The next chant are the names of the 24 Norse runes of the Elder Futhark. This is also known as runic song. Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo, Hagal, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowelu, Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala. In English: Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath, Travel, Torch, Gift, Joy, Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest, Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun, Creator, Birch tree, Horse, Man, Water, Fertility, Day, Home. Odin, prepare for battle! A hug.

Hiya, it's good to see such a thoughtful and contemplative reaction to Heilung - that's the best way to experience them, in my view. Going through your comments chronologically; The core trio (Maria, Kai and Chris) are all huge history and reenactment nerds, and their outfits are hand-made by the group. The instruments are also hand-made, using materials that would be found during such periods. For instance, the stringed instrument is a ravanahatha, an ancient Sri Lankan instrument, and the drums they use are goat, deer or horse skin (with drumsticks often made out of antlers). In the song Krigsgaldr, Maria even taps together human bones. As for the bass, Kai in particular can go incredibly low with a lot of fry, but the band do also occasionally amplify and loop elements live (hence why Chris has a little mixing desk and laptop on stage), but as far as I know the only sounds not made live on stage are the atmospherics, like the insect and bird noises you noted at the beginning. It's funny you should mention The Northman - another track of theirs, Hakkerskaldyr, is used in the trailer. The sounds of a crowd cheering (as far as I'm aware) is entirely the actual audience. A couple of other fun little facts; - Castlefest was their first ever live performance. - Until Heilung, Kai (the lead male vocalist) had absolutely no vocal training. - Kai is a legit pagan shaman, and was also one of the world's leading nordic tattoo artists (until he retired from that last week to focus on Heilung). - The second half of the song (after Kai's yell) was originally entirely improvised on the spot by Maria when she was first brought in to do female vocals, and unbeknownst to her, Kai and Chris used the entire thing, rather than cutting any of it. In terms of other recommendations from them, I'd suggest Alfadhirhaiti for a badass, "heavy" song or Krigsgaldr for a more trance-inducing one, both from the same performance. There's also the music videos for Norupo and Anoana that are shorter and probably the most accessible. The video on youtube was taken down, but if you can find a video elsewhere for their performance of Traust at Alcatraz 2021, I'd fully recommend that. And if you really like Maria being experimental with her voice, that same gig has another performance of In Maidjan, where she sprinkles in several more weird and wonderful vocal components. Obviously there'd be little point doing a reaction video for that, but it's a great watch if you want to see more of her in your free time.

If you're interested in the sounds they produce and the instruments they use; I've read in interviews and articles that in studio and on stage, they attempt to primarily use real instruments that existed during the time periods in which their songs come from (pre-history, bronze age through dark ages) and create instruments only using materials that would have been available (bone, skins, wood, bronze, etc). Their drums for instance, are all hand made deer skin. And their central drum (located on stage in back, upright) is called Blot, was handmade by the three core Heilung members; Kai, Christopher, and Maria, and is painted in their own blood. In addition to these instruments, Christopher uses recording, sampling, and looping techniques both in-studio, and live to create these walls of sound and psychedelic soundscapes in an attempt to recreate the shamanistic state that many of these songs are supposed to evoke. He also samples and manipulates natural sounds recorded in nature and adds them to the mix. So a babbling brook recorded in the wilderness of northern Germany might become a sweeping string pad sound in the background of a song. The bass you hear in In Maidjan is most likely a live sampled and looped snippet of Kai's throat singing and/or a bass drum sound that's been drawn out and looped. Trippy, but effective.

LET'S GOOOOO!!🥳Thanks for doing this reaction my guy! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, hope to see more reactions of Heilung! Really pulls you in trance. Fun fact, this was one of the main guys' who has the horns and headdress Kai Uwe Faust's FIRST TIME performing on stage, and yet his vocal control is insane with the throat singing. 2nd fun fact: I actually discovered Eivør from Maria Franz doing a cover of the song Salt!

Chris and Kai had laid down the track and asked Maria (not then part of the project) to do some vocals over it. She improvised her vocals, expecting the guys to use parts of it, they used the whole thing, she did it in one take, Maria is an amazing singer. Check out some of her and Chris' work in Euzen, a totally different band and sound.

Do a reaction to GALGALDR by these guys from the album FUTHA. It's one of the most insane pieces of music you will ever hear, I promise. Been trying to get different folks to react to it and nobody has yet. It would be a YT first. It's their most "metal" song and they do incredible shit with their voices on that track. I'm sorry you don't like my approach. This is my personality, and am pretty analytical how I approach things on and off camera, professionally and non-professionally when I'm making reaction videos. I'm not someone who does things without looking into it. I don't watch movies or shows without watching a trailer or knowing in a general sense what it's about. I dont go to a new restaurant without looking at reviews. The same goes for music. Some people will be on board with it and some will not. All I can say is I usually see comments saying the opposite to what you're saying, that the extra effort in learning about an artist is appreciated. And in no way am I invalidating your opinion. I'm simply saying this is me, and I'm not going to please everyone.

@@isabellp.5730 by the way, that's also the same problem with series like vikings. we don't know much about this aera because things were not written down, we don't know if they all had fancy tattoos or if it was painted on skin and i guess everything was less clean and fancy (cloth, jewlery, houses, places) than we tend to show today. just my opinion.

@shiveringisles3509 Жыл бұрын
@@soleywolfgangsdottir But it is meant to be theater, like a theater for the gods, as they have said this before in interviews. Have you heard about ritual opera? here in Asia we have opera or performances dedicated to gods during certain celebrations, with Heilung rituals it is less about religion and more about the experience together. Also isn't meant to be authentic, it is inspired by history but it is not a recreation of historical music or attempts to portray authentically what ancient cultures look and sound like, even though the members have a re-enactment background. Lastly most of their song are not about the viking age, the sources are from pre-christian/pre-viking age cultures and artifacts which we know even less about.
