The words are real. The language is real. The rest of it is an interpretation of what could have been. They as near as I have seen in print and interviews consider themselves artists based in bronze or iron age technology. We have no written records of actual rituals performed in the Iron age . So it is an I terpretation. The instruments, and the clothing are hand made with materials available in bronze age. You might think of it as experimental archeology into music and culture.

This song is based on the Norwegian Runic Poem, which, as in the Icelandic Runic Poem, names all the runes of the young futhark accompanied by a stanza alluding to the name of each of the runes. There is also a third Runic Poem: the Anglo-Saxon. Runic poems are believed to have served as a mnemonic tool for remembering the names of the runes and their order in the alphabet. It is an important compilation of popular culture of the time, comparable to old English sayings, Gnomonic poetry, and Old Norse poetry. The Norwegian runic poem, written in Old Norse, has been preserved in a 17th century copy of a destroyed 13th century manuscript. This poem appears in skaldic meter. And it has the following structure: The first line of each stanza is a phrase of the following type: "name of the rune + copula + X", where X is an attribute to the name of the rune, followed by a second rhymed line that provides some information somehow related to the previous sentence. In this poem and in Icelandic, all the runes of the young futhark appear in the same order. The names of the 16 runes and their order is as follows: Fé, Úr, Þurs, Óss, Ræið, Kaun, Hagall, Nauðr, Ís, Ár, Sól, Týr, Bjarkan, Maðr, Lögr, Ýr ᚠ - Wealth causes dispute between relatives. The wolf inhabits the forest. ᚢ - All dross comes from bad iron. Reindeer often run on frozen snow. ᚦ - A troll causes disease in women. Few men find joy in misfortune. ᚬ - The end of the river is the path for most trips. And a scabbard is the fate of swords. ᚱ - It is said that riding is the worst for the horse. Reginn forged the best sword. ᚴ - The ulcer is a curse for children. Death makes a man pale. ᚼ - Hail is the coldest grain. Kristr created the world of yesteryear. ᚾ - Anguish leaves little choice. A naked man is chilled by frost. ᛁ - Ice we call a wide bridge. A blind man needs guidance. ᛅ - Abundance is a blessing to men. I say that Fróde was generous. ᛋ - The sun is the light of the world. I bow down to all that is sacred. ᛏ - Tyr is a one-handed god. Often a blacksmith must forge. ᛒ - A birch has the greenest leaves. Loki forged times of deception. ᛘ - Man is the product of dust. Strong is the claw of a hawk. ᛚ - A waterfall is a river that falls from the mountain. All treasures are gold. ᛦ - Yew is the greenest of winter trees. It tends to crunch when burned. Male voice lyrics are names and words from German, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish (still unconfirmed). Uunia runus sigurd. Fähig ani regina gunda. The ritual they perform is a possible recreation. Very little is still known about Viking culture. Archaeologists believe that 90% of the objects are still buried. Heilung work closely with archaeologists, so it is possible that this ritual may have been similar to those performed 1000 years ago in the bronze and iron ages of northern Europe. The three members of the group try with their bodies and arms to recreate the 16 runes of the ancient fhutark. The video was filmed on the site ‘Les Menhirs de Monteneuf’ in France. A hug.

I wish I could copy this so I could save this. So basically it's a poem to help you learn the runes? This is amazing. You clearly know your stuff about heilung. I am just an apprentice. I don't think viking culture wasnt nearly half as bad as made out to be. Just when attacked spiritually by 100s of monks saying convert or die. Then Scandinavias going to be like screw these guys. So in my opinion the raids on christian kingdoms was kinda warranted. I believe between all the interior squabbles such a life would have been harsh brutal at times. But ultimately peaceful and more close to how a human ought to live. Ahh I was born in the wrong time

@@mpb6491 The Viking people were known for their constant looting of other towns. But at the same time, many of them lived peacefully as merchants or farmers, and many of their expeditions had the sole objective of making merchandise barter agreements. Those who instead of participating in maritime looting decided to stay at home, generally supported their families with simple agricultural activities. The day to day of these Vikings was very hard, but they took it with joy. This was helped in part by the most famous Viking drink. Mead (mjød, in Norwegian) An alcoholic concoction quite similar to beer and sweetened with honey.

@@Nidels oh I'm aware. They at the end of the day were just another culture of people trying to live that abide by the same rules of a society. One must survive. One must grow crops tend land. Farm livestock etc. "Viking" culture was famed for its trading prowess. But not many people mention that side of thier story. I've read a few stories that have said that about the trade missons that span far a wide. Scandinavia had lots of resources the world needed/wanted especially at the time. I feel like from those peoples there is a strong sense of the essence and importance of nature. And well the more in tune people are with that. The more beautiful a human. Oh and I love mead. Very tasty drink. Although the orginal may have been.... diffrent to the one I had at least!

They refer to their "music" as ritual. In this video they are adopting the poses they found on standing stones.Everything about Heilung is as authentic as it is possible to be without written records. They take ancient runes and adapt them to music using authentic traditional instruments. The time is pre viking.

The name of the band means Healing in German. Norupo is taken from the first two letters of the words Nordic Rune Poem. Their performances draw from magical rituals from all over. Their main inspiration is what we know of ancient Nordic history and culture, which according to historical accounts had a now lost tradition of throat singing like Inuits, Tibetans, and others still enjoy today. The runes are actual futhark and the symbols used in their videos and live performances are associated with the Norse pantheon, Odin particularly. According to the band, they advance no religious or political views, and prefer to be thought of as historical re-enactors.

The guy with the Tooth headpiece, Kai-Uwe Faust, allegedly based his costume on an archeological find of a shaman‘s outfit which is 9,000 or so years old. The lyrics are based on several old/extinct European languages. Gothic, Old Saxon, Proto Norse and Old Norse, Old High German...taken from old documents, rune stones and rune staves. The music is an interpretation of what would likely have been available in northern Europe 2,000+ yeats ago. I think it is awesome. I have not yet managed to listen to "Traust" in bed without dozing off or zoning out.

Sorry if the info is redundant, but Christopher and Maria also do Viking reenactments and shit as well. They are both of Nordic ancestry. Kai is a tattoo artist and actual shaman of some kind, and is German. They call their performances rituals, and consider their sound to be Amplified History. If you want to see another side of Christopher and Maria you should check out their other band Euzen. Metamorph has a really great Live at Castlefest 2015 video.

This song was basically the Norse version of the ABC song. The gestures were a part of Seidur, Norse ritual magic, where the preist(ess) and their assistants physically made the rune and invoked the properties thereof. As for the costume, my inclination is their dress tends more towards Bronze Age Germanic than anything from the Viking Age. The Norse were notoriously clean, so you'd never catch one with dreadlocks, for example.

othan is beautiful, anything from lifa live dude, they met through historical reenacting and tattoos, all costumes are handmade and authentic, the lyrics all come from pre viking stone inscriptions, old sagas and poems, they dont get more legit than this, i seen them live in london end of 2019, best gig ive ever been to, more of a ritual, i tranced out and everything, they do indeed heal

Most people haven't heard this history cause it's largely a Norse history. Most history classes focus on the Roman's culturally but when it comes to the vikings and the norse people the only thing that gets mentioned are the raids. This is based on real history that includes the shamanic practices of northern Europe.

You ask if this is "authentic germanic". The answer is no. They make this up. We have no sources what so ever as how they conducted their religion. All we know of the norse, pre-christian mythology has been filtered by christian scribes, and allthough we owe people like the Christian Snorre Sturlason a lot for actually help preserving this, much is left to desire. We hardly even know if they used temples or worshipped outdoors. We believe that eating and sacrifical eating-guilds was a thing. We also know from roman sources that the germanics sacrified people by hanging them, and thrusting spears through them, and we know that they sacrificed or executed people in moars and waters. We know little of their clothes as well. We have some finds in north germany, denemark and scandinavia of dress, but not much. We do have some interresting symbolic woven bands, and illustrations from runestones, hinting at religious processions where people dressed in animal costumes. So, no, this is not actual representation of germanic ancient culture at all. What it is, is fantastic interpretations, of how it might have been. Their tablet-woven bands are found in graves, and the lyrics they use are from actual sources, but the music, the instruments and the dress is all interpretations. I love the band, but I'd hate anybody believeing for one second that this is what bronze age people looked like and played like.

Old Norse, proto-Norse and proto-Germanic period. Lyrics are based upon ancient Rune Stones and Rune Poems. Costumes and instruments are based on everything from archeological finds to ancient historical accounts - Roman historians, early christian monks and priests and other historical accounts, etc. edit: Archeological and historical accounts tell us that most ancient cultures often added psychoactives to their mead and beer. ;)

Bangs as in percussions? I think way before string instrument were created, the first sound instruments of those ancient primal people around the world are the sound of animal skins being tighten to certain poles and be made to amplify some kind of big sound. This is what it felt to be percussion. Every culture around world will surely have percussion in our ancient or traditional native rituals.

That was very interesting. I think mongolic musicians make those kind of music much more powerful. It was starting like something is bulding up. Kind of disappointing, because it had potential. Thats why i think mongol music (which is kind of similar) is MUCH MUCH better. For me at least. I could advice you to give mongolic music a chance. "Altan Urag - Mother Mongolia " for example. ( it is a little creepy, but still kind of amazing if you concentrate on the musical aspects). But the best to this day, that is similar to that genre is a Kazach music that is called: "Hassak - Аманат ". Strongly advice you to listen to one of them. It is AMAZING
