I love this tutorial. It took heirloom sewing to another level for me with the metallic thread. I use the wing needle all the time in my heirloom sewing. When my daughter got married, I made an heirloom wedding dress for her. The dress was actually 3 pieces. I made a portrait collar, a blouse and a skirt of cotton organdy. The skirt was a circle skirt made up of 32 panels with insertion lace between each panel. I made the lace myself from cotton netting. Talking about starch, I used it straight from the bottle, so I could embroider on that netting. I finished the skirt with a Madeira appliqué hem. There were also no traditional seams in the skirt. I used the heirloom method of attaching the lace to the panels. I amazed myself at how well the dress turned out. When they walked through the hotel at the reception, total strangers ran up as asked where did she find a dress like that. That was over 20 years ago. I wish I would have known about the metallic thread back then, it surly would have been in that dress.

I would love to see photos of that wedding dress to see your work and the lace you made yourself with netting.

WOW, your daughter's wedding dress was in deed a work of art and of love with all the hand made pieces that were made to be put into it, i hope your daughter appreciated just how much her wonderful mum had done for her. My mum was my idol when it came to making things because she was a perfectionist first and foremost, but she was brilliant, unfortunately there was no way i could persuade her to make my wedding dress, she didn't trust herself. When she made anything the back or inside had to be as neat as the front or outside of anything and she would have me sit for hours redoing my stitching if she could tell the difference. Having said that when i was at Hairdressing college, part of the course was art and design and having embroidered my imaginary shop's log and a self portrait my teacher at the time put them in for a big show and it won, only thing wrong was he put them in back to front. I can do many, many crafts because of my wonderful teacher,, my beloved mum. I would so love to see a picture of your daughter's designer one off dress flower because i love seeing such beauty. I have taught heirloom sewing for years. I like the addition of the metallic thread. These stitches would be great additions to placket edges, cuffs and much more. On the last demonstrated stitch, for more glitz, try weaving ribbon or thread. That's also a tradition. BTW, in the original version of French Hand Sewing, the strips were usually left over from a worn-out garment. One NEVER threw away perfectly good lace or embroidered sections that were undamaged. Hence the stripped look on bodices and other sections of a new garment or reworked garment.

Thank you Christopher for sharing these beautiful stitches with us and what they look like when they have a different needle being used. I have never heard of a wing needle before, and often wondered how they managed to make the holes almost like broderie anglaise. When i bought my first Brother 3100D over 20 years ago i also bought the walnut chest of drawers that Madeira had out and i love going to my little chest for special thread. I bought a Brother 4000D about 15 years ago and they both work fine for all my needs, even if they are a bit long in the tooth now. Thank you for making this video for us Christopher because it shows things that we never gave a thought to. Hugs from Norah, Glenochil, Scotland

That is awesome. I'm going to look into getting some bobbin thread. I'm not sure I can use the starch. Many products have fragrances added and I’m extremely allergic to chemicals added to commercial products. Maybe the old fashion way. Cornstarch!

Can I use the wing needle with a vintage sewing machine that has limited decorative stitches? Thanks for this wonderful video, Christopher, and I love the Christening gown, cap, and all of the heirloom techniques you showed, both traditionally and contemporary, you are so gifted!! 😊
@TheJudeJane4 жыл бұрын
KawaiiBlackPixie1 I purchased a Klassé Hemstitch Wing needle 100/16 and used an open toe presser foot. Also, I used Mettler Silk Finish Cotton Thread and chose the feather stitch on my vintage sewing machine. I was careful to set the length and width for my decorative stitch according to the instructions in my machine manual. I turned the flywheel by hand prior to stepping on the foot pedal to ensure that the needle cleared the presser foot. It went very well! I recommend using it on batiste cotton or linen; otherwise, starch the heck out of the fabric and allow to dry for at least 15 minutes before sewing. By the way, I didn’t use my newer Janome, but staying with my vintage machine, I was able to use the stretch stitch for heirloom. The overcast stitch produced an interesting pintuck + heirloom effect. I hope this personal info helps to answer your questions. I will try to answer more if you have any.😊🧵

You need these repetitive stitches , where the wing needle will enter the same spot multiple times. Most computerized sewing machines have them. Hope this helps. Happy sewing. 🧵🧵
