The Vertical Flight Society held a media briefing on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, before the start of Helicopter Association International (HAI) Heli-Expo 2024. VFS Executive Director Angelo Collins spoke about some of the exciting new plans for the Society, while VFS Director of Strategy Mike Hirschberg described some of the current vertical flight innovations and modernization plans, progress and changes.

Let’s be honest… industry failed FARA. Way behind schedule and so many issues that were not discussed. The Apache would have run circles around them.

No. The requirements were for a Kiowa replacement. The OEMs delivered roughly on time (despite COVID!) but the Army specified an engine that was still in competition at the time! The problem was that the Army kept demanding more capability out of a small helicopter, so that it became as large as an Apache. Why would the Army want two big attack helicopters? They always said they wanted a cheaper complement to the Apache.

@@VTOLSociety maybe it’s a story as old as army aviation, but the army has one story and OEM has another. Regardless, innovation is stalled. Hopefully some of the advancements are passed along to other airframes.
