The influence that jazz has had in extreme metal is pretty solid. Hellhammer has just gotten better over time. I remember hearing his performance on Mayhem's "Chimera" album and just being blown away. It's rare for a drummer to continue to improve as he has.

I'll tell you from my feelings. Those drummers who went through the school of jazz (the same Hellhammer and Thrym Thornson) play at a cool level

What makes Hellhammer my favorite drummer isn't his technical proficiency, for which there are many superiors in the drumming world. Hellhammer is my favorite drummer for his unique artistic flair. Listen to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.His drumming contributes to and enhances the songs in a nonlinear additive way. His contribution to the album couldn't be removed without literally ruining the album. His playing stands out, and best of all it is SURPRISING. I love the extra notes that he mixes into his playing making a chorus feel organic, changing with each cycle. It's through the artistry of drumming that Hellhammer has earned the legendary status. He's a genius.
@richardaaron44547 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right about De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and surely no one can deny the drum production on that album. I mean I remember everyone on the internet asking what heads was he using, etc... I however am even more amazed by his work in the Arcturus albums La Masquerade Infernale and The Sham Mirrors, especially La Masquerade Infernale, I consider it to most likely be my favorite album of all time. It's so avant-garde and bizarre that it is barely metal enough to still be in the metal genre except for a few instances. Hellhammer's playing can be just as elegant and beautiful as it can be fast and powerful yet he retains a fluidity and flow like no other drummer I've yet to see regardless of style. My other favorite living drummers are Marco Minnemann and Gavin Harrison and although they are completely different from Hellhammer, I have no reservations about saying he is equal to them and may even surpass them in versatility. Music is art and not athletics and to me these three drummers are able to do as you said and add to the music, serve the music, while simultaneously playing with the highest technical ability and with tremendous feeling and emotion. Anyone who considers a drummer any less a musician than a guitarist, please learn by watching this man and see how he can compose music equal to any other musician regardless of what instrument they use.

This is where fanboys with a serious lack of talent always fail: not everything in music is about technique. Hellhammer has passion for what he does, he feels music... _magically_ it turns out as true art.

I think he makes that album. When I listen to the title song I always get lost in hearing the drums.

I had the privilege of seeing Hellhammer with Dimmu Borgir ca. the In Sorte Diabole tour. The dude did double strokes on his kicks at something like 290+ bpm. He would be a legend if his career stopped after DMDS, yet he kept on innovating and improving. I don't understand a lick of Norwegian, but it's looks like he's discussing German vs French grip plus some Moeller technique and a little push-pull. He's obviously taking an intellectual approach to the instrument and isn't simply a primal drummer.

i am quit dissapointed when i listen to people saying black metal is for white people and all that crap ...i really love this music for its anticomformist and revolutionary kind of way and opposing christianity dogmas and all the obscurity around religions(christian, islamic, or any other) ...promoting freedom of spirit and expressing ones self i thought is all about (darkthrone keep it pure and proper though without any racist shit)..i am from Greece and some northern european people tend to be racist to southern europeans and balkan countries .Syrian people we should respect , turkish people we should respect, afrikan people we should respect , asian people we should respect, south american people we should respect ....infinite Shiva being we all are and our enemy is common :stupidity and obscurity that comes from ego and phenomenality misunderstandings . one love and unity is my wish to all.happiness also .by the way Varg is a musical genious but he has dogshit in the space between his ears with all that hatespeech videos he uploads on youtube. peace!
