Today, 11/24/2023(Black Friday) is three days after the 50th anniversary of Allan Sherman’s passing. I happen to know he died the day before Thanksgiving in 1973, plus he was nine days short of turning 49. How sad. Perhaps this is why they used to play this song on the radio over Thanksgiving, as if for the two aforementioned reasons-the anniversary of his passing and his birthday? Could be. And now 50 years have come and gone since he joined “Rock and Roll heaven.” May he RIP. :) I remember there was a TV commercial in the 80s promoting some kind of soap, shampoo, etc. featuring a girl away at college writing a letter to her parents saying how much she missed the product in question, which also was sung to the Dance of the Hours. It may have been inspired by this song.

My brother and I used to listened to Allen Sherman when we were kids. my father had the "My Son the Celebrity" album. and we listened to it for quite some time. and one day when we were listening to it for some reason we got called away. possibly to eat lunch or something I guess? and so we put the album back in it's sleeve/cover. and like a couple little idiots we set the album on top of the amplifier. and when we came back it was warped all to hell. and of course it wouldn't play. that was a sad day for my brother and I. and the amazing thing is that was over 55 years ago.

This is 10 years before my time but I have always loved it as it’s so funny and clever. Such clear lyrics and this is the first time I have ever seen this man- don’t know what I expected but didn’t think he looked like this (a bit chunkier than the fabulous Eric Morecambe but similar looks- maybe it’s the glasses?) Brilliance.

Remembering Allan Sherman born on November 30, 1924. He was an American musician, satirist and television producer who became known as a song parodist in the early 1960's. His first album, My Son, the Folk Singer (1962), became the fastest-selling record album up to that time. His biggest hit was "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh", a comic song in which a boy describes his summer camp experiences to the tune of Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Sherman

My folks had a few of his records. His cleverness with words was amazing. And pairing them with great recognizable (at that time) tunes was another skill. This particular song hopped at least another generation and is known by more than just us seniors.

We actually used to throw ping pong balls into goldfish bowls to win them at town firemen's bazaars. Also, ice cream stands in the afternoon or drive-in movies at night as special treats. As late as the 70s, kids were still walking along quiet railroad tracks or jumping from low bridges into creeks for something to do. Unbelievable how much the simple things have gotten lost.
