This 1969 302 sedan was built during the sixth year of Mustang production. So what caused production to tumble by over 50-percent versus 1965? Was the car worse or did the marketplace change? And what caused certain 1969 Mustangs to ride on dinky four-lug wheels? The answers await PLUS a look at a super rare AMT Mustang model car kit.

Back then you could order your Mustang just about any way you wanted it. When my neighbor came back from Vietnam he ordered a ‘70 convertible with a 428CJ 4spd. Baby Blue with white guts and a white top. He must’ve checked every box, because that car had more options than the average Cadillac did back then. What a car!

Production scaled back because so many great looking 66-67 and 68 Mustsngs were built. Also FMC competed against itself! 67 and 68 launch of the fabulous looking Mercury Cougar. Chevy and Poncho were promoting the Camaro and the Firebird. Even AMC was in the market with the Javelin. Don’t forget the AMX . Don’t forget Mopar hit it hard with the 70 Challenger. Hottest cars of Mopar were Challenger and the Cuda. Lots of guys bought the fast and low priced 68-69 Roadrunners and GTX , not to mention the iconic Charger second generation body . Mopar was building thousands of their cars and the Didge Boys advertising worked: girls in white hot pants and white low cut tops . Guys bought a 13 sec quarter mile car which was also a panty dropper . Not to mention AAR Cudas, Mopar version of ram air and shaker hood scoops, too .

I started working as a Tool and Die apprentice at the Dearborn Assembly plant Ford Rouge complex in Dearborn Michigan starting in September 1968 after mustering out of the Army. We were assembling all types of '69 Mustangs and Cougars including the 428 Cobra Jets, 351 Hypo Mach 1's, 302 & 429 Bosses. A lot of one-off specials for the execs that never went to a dealer. We also assembled the Shelby GT350s and 500s, less front fascias and other unique items. They were completed at Carroll Shelby's facility. There were a lot of special cars for senior execs. Bunkie Knudsen's wife had a Black 428 CJ Cougar convertible with a custom tan leather interior built for her among others. Great time and place to be for a gearhead after 2 years in the Infantry. In '64 the Mustang was the only pony car & by '69 GM had the Camaro & Firebird. Chrysler had the Cuda & Challenger as '70 models in late '69. Ford had the Cougar starting in '67.

Not a Mustang owner, but I did have a ‘72 Ford Maverick, 4 dr. , Robin’s Egg Blue ext., dark blue interior, front bench, 3 speed automatic on the column. C4 transmission with a pretty slow 2.76 diff gear. I did do some work on it- installed true dual exhaust, rebuilt the 2bbl carburetor, removed the intake manifold and cleaned out all passages ( intake and exhaust ports), ran some F-70-15’s out front and G-60-15 on the rear on some real aluminum rims I found in a scrap yard, paid $100.00. Actually scared some boys in my home town, CHÂTEAUGUAY, Quebec 😜 , just outside Montreal Wish I still had that sleeper.

My mom had a 1969 Mustang Grande with a 351 Windsor. One option we had on our '69 Mustang was the little raised area around the inside of the steering wheel that honked the horn if you squeezed the steering wheel. When our Mustang broke down and needed a tow, the wrecker company towed it from the rear with the front wheels rolling on the ground. To keep the front wheels straight the wrapped they seatbelt around the steering wheel and any time the front end went over any type of a bump it would honk the horn.

The 69 and 70 were the cool muscle car looking body a real " cartoon version" like a Muscle Machine toy car...the syling those years is classic, 69 Camaro had a real cool body also...the fastback makes all years early Mustang really cool. Chrysler caught up in 1970 with the E body Challenger/Cuda IMO.

No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 9 for 1969 model year, F for Dearborn, MI assembly (closed in 2004, T for Metuchen, NJ assembly (aka Edison Assembly, closed in 2004), or R for San Jose, CA assembly (aka Milpitas Assembly, closed in 1983), 01 for Mustang hardtop, F for 302 V8 (T is 200 CID six with one barrel), among other possible codes and the rest is the production sequence. We need the VIN to win which would be on the driver's door or under the hood stamped near the mid way part of the front structure. The San Jose plant produced the two vehicles used in the move "Bullitt" and both vehicles have recently been found with stories available online with their stories. No tag, can't brag, but somewhat easy to figure out: 65C for Mustang hardtop, possible T for Candyapple Red exterior paint or maybe P for Winter Blue exterior paint, among other codes. We need the tag off the driver's door to brag. Without the buck (tag) we're out of luck. The 1974-1978 Mustang II was a heap and a laughingstock of the Mustang world. It may have been "right for the times", but it was the wrong way to go and damaged Ford's reputation. The Fox body Mustang restored it, but GM kept the torch lit the whole time through the "dark days" with the Camaro and Firebird.

In the interest of full disclosure: 1) The Mustang wasn't the first American sporty compact; that honor goes to the car that Lee Iacocca himself credits with being his inspiration for the Mustang, the Corvair Monza. 2) The Mustang wasn't even the first conventional (front-engine, rear drive) compact-based sporty coupe; that was the Plymouth Barracuda, which debuted, as I recall, several weeks before Mustang. 3) As you pointed out, Mustangs with the 200 c.i. six had 4-lug wheels. Funny, ALL 1965-69 Corvairs had 5-lug wheels, from the basic 95 h.p. all the way through the 180 h.p. turbocharged Corsa. 4) Is the Mustang even a stand-alone car yet, or is it still based on some other car's underpinnings? Let's see here... first there was the Falcon, then the Fairlane, the Pinto, the Fairmont, then... a little Jaguar ???(!) No points for originality or individuality! Back in 1980, my brother had a Mustang hardtop with the 200 engine (and, of course, 4-lug wheels) and I had my first of about a dozen Corvairs. My car had the same air-cooled 164 c.i. pancake six that all Corvair engines were based on; mine was the 110 h.p. version. A quick apology to all the Blue Oval guys out there, but my little Corvair out-accelerated his car, out-braked it, out-handled it, and got about half again the gas mileage. It also was roomier front and back. To this day I still can't figure out why so many people get all excited over what is basically a Falcon with a sportier body and an even more cramped interior!

I have a 1970 Mach 1, Grabber Green built out of Milpitas. 351 Windsor however now equipped with Edelbrock intake and 4 bbl. Just had the FMX rebuilt. Was going to do the Crown Vic tranny swap but too much $$$ that I could not afford. Car has 181,000 miles but engine about 26,000 after rebuild. Fun car to drive! Sure could use that fourth or fifth gear on the highway though!!

Hi Steve, I noticed two cars of interest in the background of this video, one being the Mercury Park Lane next to the Mustang and behind the Mustang in the distance a late 1980's Mercury Grand Marquis sedan. Could you do a future video featuring these two cars as I own a 1989 Grand Marquis and am always looking for spare parts sources. Thanks for the video !

In 1973 my uncle ordered a mustang from a Ford dealer when he was 16 for his for car. It was a q-code 351 windsor 4 barrel, which I think at the time was one of the last powerful mustangs before the 1974 downsizing started. He still owns it, but it has been sitting in his barn untouched for nearly 40 years now. If I recall right it was last plated in 1979. In 1979 he purchased a new Ford F150 4x4. Which he still owns and drives.

I never had any great love for Mustangs but I guess that stems from getting hit by a '67 Mustang GT that a kid was speeding thru our residential area in. I was eleven years old. Even 55 years later I can still see the burnt amber colored mustang right before it hit me. I spent two weeks in the hospital with a concussion, broken arm and a fractured back.

Not a very alert agile kid eh? 🤷‍♂️ we was all over in the streets in our suburban residential area / neighborhood, never heard of one kid doing any grill kissing🤔 haha actually reminds me of this security guard, parked bike out front of work guard standing there said keep an eye on it … he’s like f*** no I’ll help em steal it!! 😳 so naturally I’m like why, he hates bikes cuz his son was killed on one 🤦‍♂️ get this out in cali he’s riding thru a canyon and a horse come flying off a cliff landed on him 🤦‍♂️😝 😂 so now it’s the motor scooters fault!!! 🙄 ✌️

I once decided to run a stop sign, at a blind intersection of two 25 MPH neighborhood streets, on my bicycle as a kid - and I couldn't see if any cars were coming... I knew the chance I was taking. Well I got out in the middle of the intersecting street just in time to get hit from the left by a '76 or '77 Cutlass Supreme four door, in red with a red vinyl top. The bumper got my leg and set me to flying through the air! I landed without getting hurt and turned to go pick up my bike, (which now had a bent wheel) and saw the old man who was driving the car, and he was sitting there, gripping the steering wheel and staring straight ahead, and freaking out a little. I picked my dumb @$$ up and walked over to his window and told him "it's OK, I'm not hurt and this was my fault." And I genuinely felt bad for him. Then I picked up my bike and got TF out of there pushing my bike. I hurried to my friend's house right around the corner, stashed the bike in their garage, and went on with my life without having to explain anything to the police. Now I only run stop signs on a bike when I can see that there are no cars coming.

I noticed that when you listed all the pony cars that perhaps owe their existence to the Mustang, you of course omitted the Barracuda which arrived on the scene 2 weeks earlier, but it would be a stretch to say that the Mustang owes its existence to the Barracuda. It was many years before I found out that Gas is short for Gaston, nothing to do with his choice of fuels or digestive problems.
