Have a Great Pyrenees that won't stop barking? There is a reason! Great Pyrenees were bred to bark. Barking is their primary method of doing the job they were bred to do, guard livestock.

😂 I wake up when I don’t hear the bark at night 😊

I’ve had my Pyr for 5 months. Adopted him from the shelter. He is now 16 months as I type this. I didn’t do much research on GP’s before adopting and the barking was pretty bad. Early in the morning and late at night which could become an issue with your neighbors. He’s an outside dog and I have a decent size backyard so he has a good amount of space to move around. Anyways, I decided to take him to the dog park one day and he was thrilled. I didn’t realize how friendly and playful they are with other dogs. So I noticed there was no barking that night and no barking the next morning. I took him back a second time a few days later and again, no barking at night or the following morning. So now I’ve made it a habit to take him for 30 minute walks EVERY day. His behavior totally changed, not just with the barking but he doesn’t jump on me every time I go to the back yard and the play biting has also been brought to a minimum. He’s become somewhat of a celebrity at the park. People know his name and he gets stopped for photos. I know every dog is different so I can only speak for my Pyr, Logan. He’s a lot of work but I’m ready to invest the time. I did begin to regret my choice of adoption early on but now I know I made a good decision because not many people are willing to adopt an extra large dog. I hope this helps someone somehow.

Thanks, we just adopted a 3 month old boy. He's not an active barker yet, but taking out to play and to go on walks definitely loosens him up and chills him out.

This gives me hope! I just adopted a great pyr same as you, not doing research. She’s super friendly and has pretty good leash manors. She’s not very reactive towards other dogs or anything else. But at night she barks!! Not all night but here and there. I’ll try this. She gets two walks a day.

I got a Pyrenees mix by accident. He was at a rescue listed as a Brittany spaniel mix. Nope. 80 pounds of barking beast dog. If it creeps, crawls, or moves it will be barked at. If barking isn't enough he raises the threat level. He's a mess but we love him.

@@tbjorn7374 indeed. My dog's mom was a small 20 pound brown and black brindle coated mixed breed stray dog. Daddy was never seen. Our previous vet believed the dad was a Pyrenees or Pyrenees mixed with another livestock guard breed. Our current vet says he thinks he is appropriately half Great Pyrenees. Whatever he is, he thinks that his purpose in life is to bark. He has recently discovered the eagles trying to catch squirrels in our area. The eagle has to be nearly deaf by now because of the barking.

My GP ofc barks too. We live quite close to a big city. I'm woken up frequently by his barks, And yes, it can seem annoying. However, I made the decision not be upset at my best friend for alerting to me any/all possible dangers. Instead I always thank him and tell him he has done a great job. That is after all, his job, to protect his flock and land. I go back to sleep and he goes back to protecting us. P.S. a small % of the time I will look out and notice that there is actually something I should respond to. It's a balanced trade-off and I am very glad to have him assisting me with home defense.

As they mature, if they are companions not working, at about 2 years old the barking reduce’s or stops as it did with our 2 past GP’s. If they are working actively, deal with the barking, as stated it is defense of the flock #1. If your thinking of getting a GP #1 they are giant dogs, a single full grown GP will take up most of a full size sofa. #2 they need something to do or they will eat said sofa. #3 they bark until older. #4 of all the breeds I’ve owned they are the best. Last but not least they have relatively short life spans, 10 years on average, when it’s time to put them down, and you’ll know. Don’t just take them to the vet and send them to the back to be put down. I went to the back with every dog I had and sit on the floor with their head in my lap as the drugs were given to ease their suffering. It’s damn hard. They have lived their life for YOU. Don’t let them pass with a stranger, they deserve your companionship as they pass. It sucks to do, but they would do it for you. Never let your dog die alone if you can be with them. They earned your love in their time of need, give it to them. Getting our new GP pup in a few days. Buckle up honey here we go again :)

Well said Rocky. Unfortunately, I've been there a few times to be there with our pets as they are put to sleep. You are absolutely right, it's very a difficult and emotional experience, but it is the least we can do to be there for them in their passing as they were there for us over the years. Wishing you the best of luck and many blessings with your new Great Pyrenees puppy! Keep us posted on how it goes! ❤️

Good description of my lovely five Pyr doggies. (And yes ... my neighbors kind of hate me. But hey. I'm not crazy about them either.) My five lovelies, who take very good care of me in my kind of sketchy neighborhood: Lily, Xavi, Inky, Bean and Amaia. Where I live, the weirdos are a LOT more scared of big barking dogs than they are of guns. My doggoes love me and take care of me. Pyrs are the absolute best. And yes ... they ALWAYS circle back around to make sure I'm OK. I so love these dogs.

HOA, if I lived in an HOA I would have a GP just to tic them off. We have lived with GPs for 30 years, our last on passed on last summer, the other farm we work for still have two with the goats. The barking is a much welcome sound. So comforting to know they are out doing their thing. From an early age we made them sit and wait for the food bowl, other wise they would be all over us.

An apartment might be an issue, but if you have a home with a fenced yard (6 ft minimum), you’re good to go. Louis checks on my husband, who is disabled, throughout the day and night. He lets me know if anything unusual happening near our home.

Our adult females weight between 80-90 lbs and our adult males weigh between 100-115 lbs. I wouldn't say that 110 lbs is overweight for a Great Pyrenees. Hi there, First off, I want to say that my husband and I found your review thoroughly informative. We have owned large breeds before and are considering a Pyr. Upon my research, I am still left with questions that maybe you and the “Pyr community” could help us with before we make our final decision. 1. Food. We have an 8 year old female Siberian Husky/American Pit named Sadie that we want to find a companion for. We feed her Purina Sensitive Skin Lamb/Rice. How does this fair for this breed considering the digestive systems they have? Would Hills be more of an appropriate option or perhaps Purina Pro Plan? What about as a pup? Any suggestions? What foods did you guys feed your GP as a pup and then as an adult? 2. Training. Is it advisable to spend hundreds of dollars on obedience training versus DIY? What route did you take? In my experience, I trained all my pups, however, we are talking about a different breed here. The stubbornness is something I ran into a lot with my dogs so patience and positive reinforcement is key! 3. Grooming. My Sadie goes to the vet faithfully. Considering this dog, (His name would be Cooper) sheds ALOT, I plan to brush him myself daily, at the latest once per week for 30 minutes and take him for nail training monthly. Bathing is something I am curious to hear your thoughts on. Unless Cooper is filthy, every two months should be enough. Correct me if I am wrong “Pyr Community”…. 4. Exercise. I have a fenced in yard but would still take Cooper on two 45 minute walks daily. Hopefully, this is enough…. 5. Barking. The infamous barking….how do you effectively minimize it? I’m sure yelling at this intelligent breed to shut up would not be smart or supportive to their emotional well-being. After all, they have super sonic hearing so would you offer any tips or strategies? I sincerely appreciate everyone who took the time to read this post. I need a big, sweet, therapy dog in my life that I can enjoy for many years to come. I feel this breed matches my characteristics to a T, “big, sweet, stubborn, loyal, and intelligent”, just like a Capricorn. Anyways, I hope to hear from you and I appreciate you dearly! Blessings and prosperity!

Aaaaand so what do you do if you're one of the neighbors real close to this? Say right on the other side of the fence from one of these dogs? Bedroom and at home office 50 yards from this? What do we do? How do we get sleep? We love dogs and farm animals, but wow it's nonstop barking all night every night. We love our neighbors, and they have every right to protect their animals. But We're thinking the only option is moving at this point. Anyone have any advice on how to be good neighbors but also keep our sanity and decrease the barking?
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres Жыл бұрын
Hey Jamie! Thank you for watching. And I'm sorry to hear you are having to deal with a lot of barking at night. To answer your question, it would depend on where you live and what (if any) restrictions there are. Do you live in a neighborhood with an HOA? Are there any property restrictions or noise ordinances that would prohibit working dogs from barking at night? If so, you can try reporting it via the appropriate channels. Otherwise, if you live on unrestricted property, your neighbors are well within their rights to have livestock and livestock guardian dogs. Unfortunately I would say your only options would be to get used to it or move to a larger property where your house isn't close to neighbors and you have full control over the noise levels around your house.

@sherryholloway6150 6 ай бұрын
Hope your coping well. I'm on the opposite side. I want to be a good nieghbor so mine is in at night and when neighbor kids are out. Maybe check noise ordinances, there could be restrictions on times of day when noise isn't allowed, maybe suggest to the neighbor their dog is beautiful, but you would appreciate quiet during certain times. Hopefully they want to be good neighbors.

@@WillowRidgeAcres do they also bark from separation anxiety? Or are they ok with the TV on and another dog and pets around? My other choice is a Cane Corso. One of ours barks for a little due to separation anxiety at times. But I feel like most dogs do that at times. All of our Great Pyrenees are outside, working livestock guardian dogs so they rarely come in the house (only the females if puppy whelping gets tough). So I'm not sure if they would respond to the TV or radio being on to soothe separation anxiety. Although they do tend to lay around together in groups so I would say they do better in pairs. Hope that helps!

I noticed you separate all the animals and the dogs are in separate yards at feeding time. Do the dogs always stay in separate pastures ? Is this to prevent foid aggression?? Do you feed them once a day or several times a day?
@WillowRidgeAcres
@WillowRidgeAcres Жыл бұрын
We have a few different areas of the property that we can close/open gates to keep the animals separated for various reasons. Sometimes we will feed the dogs separate from the goats to keep the goats from trying to eat the dogs food. We feed twice daily. Once first thing in the morning around 7:30am and again around 5:00pm.

My full bred Pyrenees is not only the most barking dog I've ever had but hes a timid scared acting boy. He honestly hates going outside other than to use the bathroom. He won't go up or down our stairs. We have three acres and he's not interested in even exploring. Hes 4 years old and even though our family loves him to death , I personally am disappointed with his demeanor. We've always had golden retrievers and labs and I did a tremendous amount of research into Pyrenees and I thought I was choosing a winner.

Did you raise him as a puppy? GPs despite their size are very sensitive dogs, and do not react well to being scolded. They do respond very well to positive reinforcement. But if he was trained incorrectly as a pup that may have lead to his demeanor. If that's not the case then sometimes their are just exceptions to the rule.
