We sat down with the founder of Unega Mountain Dog Rescue, Tiffany Larson, who told us why she started rescuing Great Pyrenees and Akbash dogs in Blaine County, Idaho. Tiffany has committed her life to rescuing these animals and giving them a second chance at a happy life!
With 12 sanctuary dogs that live at Unega full-time, Tiffany and her team continue to rescue and save Great Pyrenees and Akbash dogs that have been abandoned and left to die by some sheep herders.
Under current Idaho law, these breeds of dogs are classified as livestock, therefore are not protected by the same animal rights that other dog breeds have. The team at Unega is working on changing the laws surrounding these animals.

Unega Mountain Dog Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

We helped rescue a mother and 7 of her pups - mother was living in terrible conditions. Dogs are a gentle giant. Breaks me up how people can be so heartless.

Isn't it crazy what some people do to their animals?! It's amazing to see how some of these animals were treated so horribly and yet are so kind and gentle towards humans after everything they've been through!

I can't believe that the state of Idaho allows such abuse and cruelty to these magnificent dogs. We rescued a Great Pyrenees a little more than a year ago and he is absolutely the most loving and wonderful dog that we have ever owned. My heart ❤️ breaks for these dogs. Thank you so very much for what you do. Bless you 🙏

Where are you located? I have a 2 year old Pyr he's a big baby with his family, my issue is I live on a busy roadside I don't have a farm, etc and now he's gotten into a habit of chasing cars away very dangerous he keeps running toward the road on me. My next option is chaining him when he goes out but I feel bad.

We live in Kansas and we have an abandoned Great Pyrenees. She is 2yrs old. We are an older couple and cannot keep up with her. We for the 1st time fenced in our yard. We live on the out skrits of town, so she still has room to run. She plays with our greatgranchildren and is one of the best dogs we have had (all rescue dogs) She came with her own hard story and we will make sure she has a very goodidea. She weigh 44lbs when we got her and sick. Now she is 180lbs (not fat) and is well qnd happy!! Being the bread she is she can be stubborn but she gets around to doing what you ask eventually. While we were not gonna get anymore dog because of our age, we wouldn't give her up for anything. Our grandaughter drops her kids off in the morning before work and brings there dog along. They are great for each other and play and get along great, so they both have a campaign. What else could be better than famialy and pets. We LOVE her alot. So happy to hear about your rescue for them. God bless you so much!!!!

I rescued a 3-month old Great Pyrenees puppy. She is now 3-years old and I was thinking that Serena might be a mixed breed because she is, at only about 70 pounds; quite small for the breed. However, she is extremely powerful and can twist the links of a chain link fence with her jaws. But, except for size, she exhibits all the attributes of the breed and I had a DNA test done which shows she is pure Pyr, The vet states that she is perfectly healthy and just smaller than normal. I live on a acre and a quarter in a semi rural area of San Diego County California and Serena is perfect for my needs. We don't have packs of coyotes roaming but we did have frequent solitary coyotes nosing around our fence line hoping to pick up an easy meal of one of the small dogs we rescue. Since the arrival of Serena, we have not noticed any lurking coyotes. She is great with our small dogs and is absolutely wonderful with kids.

Needing some advice for a new to us aggressive pyrenees 2 year old. We just got him from a home in Spokane WA and he will not come out of the hose stall in our barn, he was attacking the door when we were by it but now he just stays in the corner softly growling. We will leave the door open but he doesn't even move, he does let me go in and get the food and water but still growls pretty good, any help would be great. Thanks

I had no idea about this awful scenario, the law classification. I am not naive and rarely shocked by mistreatment but I am for worjing dogs such as LGD's. I thought they would be a valued asset?? I follow another YT channel BECAUSE of their magnificent LGD's. They are so well bred, trained and cared for and star of the show. Shepherds in the UK hold their Herding dogs in such high regard as huge assets and loved companions. Why on earth would you not care for and value the asset that is protecting your livelihood?? You shouldn't need a law to tell you to care for your working dog. It's so disheartening that yet again, in yet another scenario, dogs are abused neglected and disposed of. I already support galgos rescues in Spain it seems there are horrors for dogs on every continent. Thank you so much for your work.

It's important to note that there are so many amazing operations and ranchers who treat their dogs wonderfully! The problem are the few bad ones who are able to get away with poor treatment because of the laws. Those who treat their working dogs great actually see better returns in the long-term and that is what we are aiming to spread awareness about. Tiffany and her team at Unega do amazing work for these animals and we hope to help them be the voice to get the laws changed so the abuse and mistreatment ends and people can be held accountable

Thousands of years ago, humans made a deal with horses and dogs. If they would serve the needs of humanity, mankind would feed and protect them in perpetuity. Horses and dogs have kept their part of the bargain -- humans, not so much.

You have no racoon faces? Valuable dogs, love to run away, not highly intelligent. Do yours always keep their dew claws- very ancient breed, totally loveable.

Hi! The whole property is fenced in with various sub-enclosures to separate new rescued dogs from the sanctuary dogs. They have plenty of room to run around and the rescue is set up perfectly to ensure no one runs away! Additionally, they are highly intelligent pups who just like to roam around and can be stubborn - they all have their dew claws as well.

If you think Pyrs aren't intelligent, then you haven't known many. Just because a dog isn't overly interested in obeying your commands doesn't;t mean it isn't intelligent. Pyrs were bred to be independent thinking and acting LGD's (livestock guard dogs).

Unfortunately I understand why the law is the way that it is and why it needs to stay, these working dogs are not pets and normally should not be treated and as such it is also not right to put more of a burden on people who are doing a job and doing it the right way . The big picture can be more important than how we feel about what's one or not . It is not like Farmers don't want to loose livestock dogs included, so they do what they can . A law change won't save more dogs more will just dissappear when they get sick . So please think more about what a change of the law would actually do other than make someone feel better .
@BellaandNikola
@BellaandNikola Жыл бұрын
Respectfully disagree! They are ultimately dogs, that happen to have a working purpose on a farm, just like a herder or collie. They should have the same protection as all other dogs in the eyes of the law and be treated right. Changing the law would allow for action to be taken against people who are consistently abusing and killing these dogs. We are all for these dogs serving their role with sheep herders and being put to work - no problem at all - but they should be treated properly while protecting and in the off-seasons. There are so many good ranchers out there that are already treating their dogs great, there would be no additional burden to them. This is specifically for the bad ranchers and holding them accountable!
@rickyricardo3551
@rickyricardo3551 Жыл бұрын
@Bella and Nikola Unfortunately, we are in a time where people think a law change is the right way to handle an issue and that somehow the change will fix the problem(prohibition showed people doing the same things just hiding it) . So now people do not try to fix the root cause of the problem and instead push off the responsibility .. I'm sure the dogs would prefer if people would try to change the minds of their owners so they dont have to rely on a law that won't do much, if anything. For starters, how will leo's check or know to check to see if these dogs are okay . If you can somehow make it practical, great , I just don't see that happening in anyway but I seriously hope you have a practical way and if you do I would like to know(100% serious).
@davidturgeon2087
@davidturgeon2087 10 ай бұрын
@@rickyricardo3551 Laws are there to instill responsibility in those who have none of their own. You talk about changing the minds of the owners. Well, there's nothing like a hefty fine to two to change an obdurate mind. We have laws against injuring and killing people, so why not for these magnificent animals who only wish to serve and protect?
