I would paint the landy either British racing green or a dark olive green and keep the roof as it is,maybe

HD Front coils,wolf rims in black,with BFG KM3 255/85 R16,front and rear mufdflaps,keep the canopy.

Leave the bodywork with the scratches and dents and get rid of the shed on the back - there are too many over clean defenders!

There are a couple of causes for the leak at the back. The rocker cover gasket can get pinched after being replaced, which can cause a small leak. Another cause is the fuel pressure regulator which can weep diesel. It washes oil and muck from the back of the engine, giving the appearance of an oil leak - it has caught a lot of people by surprise.

Lanoguard the hell out of it underneath. Much easier to do than Dinitrol and environmentally friendly 😊

Also on the engine. Change the injector wiring harness, unless it's new. And check the ECU plugs for oil. Oil wicks down the injector harness wiring and can get into the ECU. It's a common issue but not a problem if caught in time. Rough running will be the clue. The TD5 is a very smooth running engine, it doesn't have an injector pump and it doesn't sound like other diesels.

Rocker cover gasket, common for it leak at the back where the half moon section is. Change the injector harness at the same time. Looking forward to the videos and progress.

TD5 engines are ok. Change the cam cover gasket and seals. It's got chain drive not belt. Plan on changing the injector seals unless they have been done. Easy job. Most important, check your oil level at most weekly, ideally daily! The weak spot on the TD5 is the cylinder head. They crack and leak diesel into the sump. The level rises and eventually the engine runs away. Best solution is to fit the Spanish made AMC head. Pricey but good if you plan on keeping it. All above from my personal experience.

Leave it stock standard as it came from the factory - thats how we left our 90 XS - no aftermarket parts - just the way LR designed it even the original steering wheel

My seat base was knackered on the left side (lhd car), so I swapped it for the passenger one. Few years later that one was worse, so swapped them back. Then the back sponge went. Swapped the entire seats over, and now everything is knackered 😅

The leak will be from the cam seal, its a round dish like cap about 2" dia it just pops out and you can either get a new one or just clean the old one up and fit it back with some sealant...10 min job.

Hi again! The other thing that occasionally happened to the TD5 was the oil pump drive failing. It seemed to happen more often to early ones and occasionally to late ones. The bolt holding the chain sprocket to the oil pump would work loose, causing the sprocket to fall off and the oil pressure to go to zero. These days, it is cured mainly by better Loctite and increasing the torque setting on the bolt. Oh, a couple of urban myths: 1) NO, the TD5 is not a BMW engine! It was the last engine designed by LR before BMW bought them. 2) The TD5 is NOT a marriage of an Audi block and an LR head!

British Racing Green would be my choice if it was mine or the navy blue that Land Rover does currently on Discovery Sport/Evoque's etc. It makes a change for you to be talking about a Land Rover with a smile on your face.

The leak at the rear is likely to be the Rocker cover gasket which leaks at the half moon shaped part in the back. Easy to change and is usually done when you change your injector wiring loom. What about Atlantis blue? Used on the 50th anniversary Land Rover Defenders and only about 1000 made so you won’t see that many in this colour. What a lovely original Defender!! Good find!

My choice of colour would be the Cobar Blue Mica. Would look stunning with white or cream wheels and stainless accessories.

Before you resort to heat on the headlight surrounds give clean motor oil a try, might only be temporary but it looks way better than sun-faded grey and doesn’t make them brittle

Hi Doc. I'm really looking forward to the new build. For a non standard but 'heritage' colour I've always fancied doing mine in Audi Nardo Grey. It's a light grey but looks really great with black accessories. Great content as always!!

I'm going to use Bilthamber products on and in my chassis when it warms up a bit. Tried lots of other products over the years, but not all last so well. Just bought some SC engineering parts, window blocks and bonnet hinges and will certainly be buying the door hinges, having seen the quality of the other products.

The oil leak at the back of the engine is likely to be the rocker cover gasket, there's a half-moon shape part that is known to leak. Also, if you use a heat gun on your headlight surrounds and grille, they should come back to black

Heating the plastics up makes them brittle. Use some good back to black liquid or carbon collectives trim ceramic, will bring them back and keep them from going brittle

What about making it a full length soft top in sand and painting the vehicle in Deep Bronze Green. Very heritage. A 110 soft top with the sides rolled up looks very cool.

Have a look at Marine Blue, I think it’s a Land Rover Heritage Colour, looks really well with the same colour steel wheels and a light brown leather interior. I felt your pain with the Discovery Sport, I think you handled JLR well getting the best possible outcome. Great videos, looking forward to seeing your journey with the Mud Plugger. Love the new Ford pickup!

I had oil shooting out of the back of my 300tdi and it was a head gasket blown, could be that? Also, I'd paint it a burgundy red colour!

I’d be tempted to convert into final edition like Autobiography spec in burgundy and black, grey leather seats/ luxury interior with sunroof. Remove rear canopy and go for Jeep Gladiator look with spray in Ute liner for practicality. Then power upgrade and tweaks to suspension to make ride well if possible. Or original lol your choice - enjoying the videos.

Hey TDG. Have you had to change the tax class of your truck? I’m having a nightmare working out how to reclassify mine from Farm use to Road vehicle. Wondered if you had to do same? I can’t believe the tax will cost £735 a year!?! Cheers Rich. ;o )
