Interracial relationships between Indians and Westerners aren't easy... Especially when your parents don't believe in interracial marriage. What do you do when your Indian parents don't want you marrying outside of your race? What if your horoscopes don't match? These are some problems I've had to deal with in my life with Indian women I've dated.
In this video, Manisha and I tell you what to do to get your parents on board with your foreign partner, what life would be like if you decided to marry into an Indian family and come live in India, and what to do when both Indian and Western parents don't like races mixing.
4:47 What's it like living in a joint family?
7:08 How Manisha convinced her Dad I'm not a bum.
9:50 Is there privacy in a joint-family?
13:34 Before marrying into a family in India, do this!
15:20 What to do if the families don't want you to marry.
20:01 What if your family threatens to disown you?
21:54 How Manisha approached her parents about us.
23:31 What if it all goes bad?

I have a friend who’s sister got disowned by her parents because she agreed to marry a guy whom her parents detested. It turned out well, she has a little son and they are happy together. It’s sad for her to never speak to her parents ever again, but she moved on and is doing amazing things with her life. For once, she earns more than her father who disowned her. So it’s not always a bad story when your family disowns you, sometimes your family could just be too toxic and you might need to let them go.

Indian guy here living in Toronto, Canadafor the last 5 years. In a relationship with a Korean girl. She was born and raised here but her parents are still very rigid and don't know about us. Her last bf was Iranian and when she told them they straight up disowned her. I wish so hard that they would just see me for the person I am and not categorize me based on their past experiences. They want someone Korean for her. Heck, even though they don't know I exist, I am learning Korean language hoping that whenever she does tell them about me and if I ever meet them, I can talk to them in Korean. I can't look like a Korean guy but I hope learning the language sweetens the deal a little. She is ok if they disown her but it guilt trips me as she has a good relationship with them right now. Finding out about me and her choosing me no matter what is only gonna break this family and I don't like thinking that I am the one responsible for this... i don't know what else to do...

In addition to Karl and Manisha's excellent advice, my suggestion is also to MAKE ALLIES IN THE FAMILY. I've chimed in with this before but my parents are mixed, Father's side Indian, mother's side Japanese. Fathers on both sides were fine with the marriage, but the mothers were not. My Mom was headstrong though and got married to him anyway without getting her mom's blessing (she eventually came around after I was born and saw my dad was a good person 😂). My father's brothers and sisters loved my mom so they begged their mother to bless the wedding, and she eventually said she would bless it if they bought her a refrigerator... They did, and she approved. LESSON: MAKE ALLIES WITHIN THE FAMILY! Begin an introvert it might be hard but the girl needs to reach out and get close to her potential brothers and sisters in law, since they're most likely in the same age group, and it'll be easier than with the older generation. Also if she gets in good with the Aunties and Uncles, who may be more open since it's not their kids in the situation, will be a HUGE help. They can be her wingmen and put in good words for her and may have an influence. Also touch their feet whenever they see each other. 😁 👍

@substrate.academy 4 жыл бұрын
As my cool mom says, they should run away and get married, and later the family has to agree 😬. On a serious note, if they are so rigid that they can go to the extent of disowning, she will probably never be accepted completely in the family. And she has to have the confidence in the guy that he will protect her. Imagine being an American, staying with your in laws in India and everyone ganging up in the family pushing you into a corner with the guy silently watching and letting it happen. This happens a lot with Indian girls as well and you will just be frustrated and resent your decision after a point.

I'm in my early 30s and I live with my dad. I lived on my own for most of my 20s, but when my mom passed I moved in with my dad because he'd be alone otherwise. It's been pretty nice living with him, we've gotten closer than we ever were when I was in high school. But if I were to tell a girl _"I live with my dad"_ she'd dump me in a heartbeat, doesn't matter if I live in a big house or not. If you tell a girl you live with your parents, you're automatically a loser. Something went wrong in western society. We stopped placing value on family, we try to move away from them as soon as possible and we only seem to care when something bad happens. Hell, most of the time we just throw our grandparents in nursing homes so we can forget about them.

I hear you, also live with my Dad (and my mum, sorry for your loss), an have definitely worried about that reaction fro m potential partners. Although I've now been in a new relationship for 10 months and he's been fine about it. So maybe give people a chance and hopefully they will surprise you. Also the right person should value the compassion you've shown by choosing to live with your Dad after in his time of struggle. Does make more casual situations hella akward though! An I think it's a lot more common than it was, certainly here in the UK. I know a lot of people who live at home to save for mortgage s, and travel, with the high cost of rent its sometimes a necessity. I couldn't ask for better room mates though.

I think interracial relationships are particularly hard when the old world meets the new. The old world is steeped in heritage, tradition, and customs. The new world is avant-garde, laissez-faire and post-modern in comparison. Compromise and a bit of capitulation is key. Most of all, you really have to love the culture you are adopting.

As an South Indian I know how important education is, so most probably she will be able to work and can do whatever she wants. The problem lies on what comes after, traditions, what parents expectations are. The best thing to do here is what Manisha did, and communicate. She needs to talk to him, and understand what the expectations are. He needs to talk to his parents and let them know that YOU ARE SERIOUS! That your not just playing around and your willing to fight the fight. It’s going to be a struggle but trust me if your meant to be the journey and struggle will make you stronger as a couple and at the end of the day hai parents will accept you. If the journey is too much for you, and you can’t bear then it’s time to move on. This is what my cousin did after being in a relationship with a girl from a different state. It will always depend on your love and if your willing to fight for it

So a woman does go through a lot in Indian traditions and it is a lot to take in. The only support she can get is from a husband who's ready to support her with half of all responsibilities around the house plus give her the freedom to work if she wanted to. Staying with parents is skeptical cus you can own two places near and around your family but easily balance your personal life. It's actually a big thought before you make a decision.

I live in the UK. Both white British. There were all kinds of prejudices our parents had, but we went on our own. I left home with almost no money, no job, at a moment's notice, after a row. Just a sleeping bag and a few clothes. I slept on a friend's kitchen floor for 3 months. I got a job, kept seeing my girlfriend and eventually lived together for three years. We got married with no parents invited and just two friends as witnesses. We've been married over 40 years now, but what is a piece of paper? My wife has never worn a wedding ring. We simply left it for our parents to put up with the way we were going and our independence was always more important than family prejudices. We saw both sets of parents until they all died, on our terms and not very often, a couple of times a year. My wife was cut out of her parents' will, but we'd made our own way in life. In India things would be very different though, and the parents and their extended family and friendships could well make your life very difficult and uncomfortable. Best advice is take Karl's suggested one month holiday with an open mind and see the reality you face. Go home and if you still want to do it, try to talk through the fear points with them one by one, as Manisha suggests. Otherwise you are flying into something blindly and you would be crazy to do that, however much you love the boy. Our parents only met once in our entire lives and that was for a few hours at a neutral restaurant that we arranged.

I have a similar situation like your's Karl. Im from Delhi and my wife is from Belarus and we live in Belarus. And i understand the problem given girl is facing, We also had a bit of similar issues our parents had some doubts needed some convincing but were not so rigid. We also went through all the parts of game like horescope matching etc. but they were not the deciding factors. We did this after our parents agreed, i guess just was for fun. Whatever you suggested is right, but most important point is time give your parents time visit them let them know you and you should make efforts to know them. Absolute vital is having pure 100% support and confidence in partner (you need to be 10000% sure of it, rest you'll fight with). Marriages like us need a lot of effort and lot of compromises but if both of you love each other equally then it should not be a problem. Try to slide things smoothly do not force anything on anyone and it might take time but consistency always pays off. We were in a long distance relation for 3 years but we visited each other and met parents too. So time is what you need, remember marriage is not only about two individuals (exceptions are always there).

Hi from Ireland guys. Karl, I love your videos, discovering them while I was recovering from COVID and housebound for 14 days. I watched them all two or three times at this stage (my favourite is the pashmina scammer). I’ve spent over 8 years (from 1991) in India and as soon as India recovers from Covid (whatever that means) I plan to figure out how to move to there. Is that possible without marrying an India? I would like to eventually all the same. It’s all I think about. India is my 2nd home. I totally share many experiences with you Bhai, the one that really stands out is the altitude sickness while I was biking to Kardungla. One time I went to India with a set plan of all the places I wanted to visit but just spent 6 months in Delhi where I have many friends. Keep doing what you do. I check for new uploads daily.
