The second week of February, 2021, was brutally cold across much of the country, so that birds had to struggle to survive. All we could do was feed them and provide them water--and watch as they endured. WARNING: THIS VIDEO SHOWS TWO BIRDS SHIVERING FROM THE COLD, ONE THAT HAS DIED, AND A DEAD ONE THAT GETS EATEN.

Oh cool! I see you have upside down suet feeders! The Grackles and Starlings come every year in March and gobble up all the suet until July from the wonderful native woodland Virginia birds! I loathe them so. They eat it all. I am now trying my best to keep suet out for a lovely Flicker. Even now I see her in a knothole ..and I think I wow if she would nest there! Its close to a suet feeder I remember years ago my father made upside down suet feeders. I thought it was his own creation. Perhaps he had seen them in Birds and Blooms or a Virginia Wildlife magazine. This was about 20 yrs ago, I suppose. And every year, almost, I mention those to him Because of my frustration. He's elderly now. Maybe I need to research them. I love the blackbirds. And the Redwings that come (I call them admirals) with the starlings and grackles are delightful. There used to be an old barn that was still in prime condition (100 yrs old) but the Y burned it down to make a hideous housing development. Barn owls, screech owls and 1000"s of barn and tree swallows called it home. It's such a shame. I never see swallows anymore. Thank you, for your lovely channel. I feed 100's of birds and many varieties. All year. I used to have cockatoos and fed them baked sweet potatoes, the robins loved the. Left overs I think they are even eating the homeless cat's kibbles because it is so dry. I sure hope we get rain this weekend!

I am glad to hear you're recovering, Jo, and that you are making a wise decision - although we will miss your beautiful work, certainly. Nonetheless, I'm sure we will enjoy your future productions even more knowing that you are caring for yourself AND the wildlife. This video was very informative and poignant. I will now shell some of the peanuts that I buy for the squirrels, to make life better for any of my visitors who may be interested in them. And yes, the tip about cleaning feeders is timely and very important. Our feathered friends have enough to deal with. I look forward to your next video in late March, Jo. Hopefully it will be a beautiful Spring. You might just take us out to your little creek and do a "livestream." No editing required. Sincere regards to you and yours, Jo.

Oh my goodness, Jo bless your heart. I'm so sorry you went thru such an ordeal. I'll keep you in my prayers. I enjoyed this video so much I was worried about my birds too when that cold hit us here in Saint Louis plus that snow, we kept our feeders full too and we have a heater for our bird bath so that seemed to help keep some water thawed for them. But I see and learn so many things from your videos I never thought that I'd see before especially the squirrel eating a dead bird, oh my goodness. Your videos are truly amazing and I learn a lot from them and I appreciate them very much and I cannot wait until the next one comes out. Please take care of yourself God bless you always.

That cold snap was brutal! I had 30 starlings huddled shoulder to shoulder on my window box feeder on my balcony. They swap the outer birds like penguins do in their huddles to keep everyone warm. The day before they sheltered together I did find 1 dead frozen starling, poor dear. It was obviously struggling the day before. Even witnessed other starlings trying to comfort that bird. My robins eat cut up suet I place in bowls on the balcony floor. As do the mockingbird, wrens, mourning doves, and 2 bluebirds. May you have a quick recovery. Thank you for your important bird information and ideas!

I understand the sitting at computer too, getting more headaches, and being too sedate. Anyway I wanted to say keep them coming best you can and speedy recovery. I enjoyed the knowledge of this video it was tough trying to keep my babies out there with food but they were waiting for me! I did the best I could too. Though, I didn't see one squirrel during the 2 major CT storms here, 6-8 inches of snow and ice it was horrendous the temps...but they are here now ready for mating season and eating all my seed once again. Take care and hope you heal quickly and glad you are not blind, yep - freak out, I hear ya on that one. 💜🕊

Dear Jo, will always look forward to your content whenever it happens. Thanks for posting a truly realistic portrait of how harsh and deadly winter is for wildlife. So sad to watch but encouraged by you and your husbands dedication and love for birds. If it wasn't for all the feeders you offer, well, no question it would've been a lot worse. Very sorry to hear about your accident. It is so frustrating dealing with a serious injury, I know, been there a couple of times last year. On the mend with a recent left wrist fracture, luckily like you it wasn't my dominate right. Thankful for the little mercies and those that help us heal. Enjoy your walks! Hope winter is on the way out in St. Louis and the cardinals are starting to sing.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME 3 жыл бұрын
Cathy, I missed your reply until now, but I appreciate your response and sympathize about the fracture. How much is that going to affect your ability to film? Filming is a two handed procedure, and a fracture could take months to heal. Sounds like you're getting out of this winter with less pain than I've had but with an injury that could hamper you even longer than my eye injury will. I was pleased to see widespread approval from my viewers for this movie despite the grisly footage. It was, because of those shots, a more emotionally charged movie than I usually post.

Thanks for your concern Jo. Wrist is mending and physical therapy is helping a lot. Things are manageable, just slower and more frustrating than before but okay. I think you produced a realistic view of how wildlife endures or not. Maybe cause I'm a New Yorker but I prefer reality over the Pollyanna view. Life isn't easy for most on this planet and maybe seeing how hard it can be will cause more compassion and action. At least I hope it will.

I hope you are healing quickly! I am in Southeast KS, I will be better prepared to help birds in the next cold snap with your ideas, thank you... I put out cracked corn, and they loved it! lots of red winged black birds, various sparrows, cardinals . I found a dead starling, near an old dog house I had put straw in, on the south side of my house...I saw birds hanging out there for shelter in the opening... I spotted a bird eating/pecking a dead starling body! I was astonished at that. A couple days after the severe cold, I found a dead meadowlark just inside the dog house. Poor guy, he almost made it. I put out a heated dog water bowl for water, I saw a female cardinal really get some chugs in!

What an ordeal for the birds to live through. Even with the extra food, some didn't survive. It would be interesting to know how often Connie filled the feeder. I also noticed that the squirrel, eating the pine siskin, had its fluffed out tail over its back the whole time. It seems like the bacteria would grow slowly in temps that low but it's a good reminder to clean those feeders. Thanks for this wonderful, informative film.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME

He was out there morning and afternoon usually. The birds didn't empty the feeders, but they ate enough so that he had to refill them that often. I wondered too about the bacteria growing more slowly in the cold. That's possible; he just doesn't want to take chances. He didn't see any House Finches with eye disease this year. He attributes that to being diligent about cleaning the feeders. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie so much; I thought it was engrossing

I had a recurring robin who would forage for scarcely fallen berries in february, I thought he looked VERY cold from how fluffed up and tired he looked, he was a wobbly thing. So I went outside one day after seeing him so many times and I warily tossed him a halved grape, and he came over and took it. I started setting food out respecting the bird's space and eventually he didn't mind if I was there anymore because I had food. He would come up to my patio end table and eat nuts and fruit I set out. I didn't have much money at the time but I gave him what I could, he would sleep and drink there on that table too. And he would come several times a day to look for things, so I'd start give him food whenever I saw him. This video makes me think of that robin, it seemed like he did need my help, or perhaps he just mighta thought he found the jackpot. He stopped coming around in late March, I hope he's warm and lively out there. Bless you Jo, I hope you feel better and keep on keepin' on.
