The time came to replace this high mileage timing chain. Glad I did. This video is DIY style and includes Harmonic Balancer, Water Pump, Idler pulley's, belt tensioner and of course replacement of the original timing chain, gear set and chain.
Rock Auto invoice was $202 Cloyes Timing Set, Fel-Pro Gasket kit for cover, Gates. Water Pump, Pulley, Tensioner, kit with a new belt. Upper and lower Radiator Hose Thermostat. NAPA was $21 for 2 gallons of Zerek G05 coolant and $35 for 7 quarts of oil and filter Lowest bill was $12 for concrete mixing pan Dollar General $2 for 2 gallons of distilled water. $75 tool rental for harmonic balancer from Autozone (Refunded) Grand total was just over $250

Oil pump: Next time remove all 4 bolts from oil pump and twist clockwise. You will then be able to get a box end wrench in there. Never touching the oil pan.

I was able to get the pickup tube bolt out this way, but it’s not easy. After I had it slightly loosened I looped safety wire around the bolt between the head and the captured washer and was able to use that as a “wrench” to work it out without dropping it into the oil pan. Took a half hour. Haven’t put it back together yet...not sure how I’ll do that but I’m so not going to deal with dropping that oil pan.

liked the video, and liked the 300k miles and stick shift truck. I also liked painting the date on the cam "gear", though I would have written the mileage, too. A couple corrections: you don't need to bathe all the cam bolt threads in LocTite, just a few drops on the engaged part of clean, dry threads is sufficient. Heat does not "activate" the threadlocker. Lack of oxygen hardens the threadlocker. Sufficient heat actually melts the threadlocker. I think I would have gone with a new oil pump, were I that far into it, but that's just me. Anyway thanks for the video.

Jon Dison ...Hmm I’ll have to look at my other videos to answer mileage on valve spring breakage question. I want to say like 250K. Never left me stranded though. Take a look at my first valve spring vid. The second one was to change the seals which I should have done the first go. Valve guides are done by a machine shop and yes to your question about having to pull the heads for replacement. Valve seals can be done like my video shows.

Great video! I would mention that the oil pump can in fact be removed without taking out any oil pan bolts (aside from the ones connected to the timing cover). Remove the 4 bolts and with a little bit of effort should be able to rotate the oil pump clockwise just enough to access the oil pump pickup bolt. I think the only things that were not addressed in the video; How did you remove the camshaft bolt? Impact? Also when reinstalling the harmonic balancer/pulley did you just bang it on and use the bolt to snug it back up? Or a installer tool/longer bolt? Thanks again!
@mediajunkie2195
@mediajunkie2195 6 жыл бұрын
Mark M thanks for commenting. I wasn’t as fortunate as you. I wasn’t able to rotate the pump enough to get even close to pulling the pick up bolt. I think it has something to do with the 2500 4 bolt main caps. Yes to impact gun for cam bolt. 3/8” drive Milwaukee. Harmonic balancer went on far enough to use the bolt to draw her down.

Just pulled my cover at 163k miles, 04 ram 5.7 5-45rfe. Tensioner isn't broken, chain is pretty damn tight still Replacing it anyway Your video although good isn't very clear about a couple things here: 1) AC compressor has a 3rd bolt in the back, what a weird design. I snapped the 3rd back leg of my compressor thinking it was just stuck after removing the 2 big bolts like the Alternator is setup. 2) The timing procedure. The cam gear has a dot that needs to be at 12oc, the crank gear has a dot that needs to be at 6oc, and the timing chain has 3 links that have identifying marks, they look like squares. The 2 squared links that are side by side, the cam gear dot needs to be in the middle of the two link. The single squared link needs to be right on the crank gear dot. Hope this helps

I didn't have any iPhone coverage of the third compressor bolt. It is in-fact a weird design. Concerning the timing, I used aftermarket timing set. Cloyes to be exact so the timing marks were different than the OEM set and manual reflected. Glad to hear your up and running. Mine was shot at 300,000 miles. SHe's still on the road now at 345,000

Some thing went on my truck, and just got the same parts you installed and changing the oil pump. I know the oil pump is failing because the oil light is on. And it has enough oil and I can feel the motor having low pressure. Was there noise like ticking, or something in that nature?

HEMI 5.7's are reliable up to the very point they fail and grenade causing catastrophic damage. Any new parts you throw at her to keep her up and running as preventive will pay for it self all around. Plus by keeping up with the valve train you'll double the life. Then drive it like you stole it. 2006 was a great year for Dodge.
@DresdonAcacinTheOriginal

My 5.7 Hemi Police engine loves Royal Purple, it may just be switching from standard to premium is what it likes but its still worth looking into. @Media Junkie I absolutely agree, the 5.7Hemi if maintained is incredibly reliable, the only common issues Ive seen is ticking valve train but thats not particularly dangerous, half the time seafoaming the engine is enough to fix it, sometimes you need to change some parts of the valve train but oh well. As for me personally the only issue my Hemi's had is blowing the seals on the NAG1 5 speed auto's sensor housing but fixing that is nothing difficult by any stretch. I hear the new 8speed auto based off the old bulet proof torqueflite transmissions is incredible

I have a question for you I got a Hemi 5.7 2007. My oil pressure gauge quit working wife was driving home from Tulsa. So I ordered a new one online from California and it arrived today. I slipped the old one out new one in and plugged it up. Cleared the computer and started truck still reads no oil pressure but runs great. I am stumped. Was wondering if you had any ideas is there a fuse i looked in fuse box but didn't see anything.

Hmm. Not a clue. Did you join a forum yet? I am on Dodgeforum.com as well as one Cummins. Most oil pressure indications on cars are resistance type sender units. Higher oil pressure typically equates to lower resistance and result is direct reading on the gauge. I would think surely Dodge has followed suit but not 100% on this. Have you checked the sending unit? I think its next to the filter but don't recall specifically.

Nope it did not jump timing. I chose to change out timing set as prevention only due to high mileage. Your problem could be a broken spring or valve seat has dropped. 03s were common for both especially dropped valve seat if it ever overheated. Hopefully your problem is limited to just a broken valve spring as that's easily fixable. Dropped valve seats and broken timing chains are typically catastrophic.

Moving earth this isn't about the timing chain but the noise you thought was the hemi tick. Have you fixed it or had it diagnosed? I thought mine was the hemi tick but it turns out it was the exhaust manifold. This engines are known for having the manifold bolts break off, cause an exhaust leak right there. I had a total of 4 break, 2 on each side. I got lucky and they broke off flush with the manifold. Alot of guys break off flush with the head and have to drill them out or take the heads to a machine shop to get them out. Once my manifolds were off, a pair of vise grips easily removed the broken bolts. Bought new gaskets and bolts (bolt kit for one side was around 35 dollars at AutoZone). Mine is an 06 ram with the 5.7 hemi
