I do some shooting with the new Henry Repeating Arms Long Ranger rifle chambered in 308. I do an accuracy test as well as go over the features of the rifle and what I think of it overall.

I sold a guy one of these yesterday. He was super happy to get a .308 in a lever gun, and he put a 4-16x50 vortex viper on it! I really hope he gets a deer with it, best wishes to that dude

I ran into one of these yesterday and I was shocked at how different it looked. I asked the clerk to let me look at it and I was excited that it was so different from a regular lever rifle, but not enough to be weird. I thought I would let it go, but this morning I searched to see if you had reviewed it and you had. Thanks for the insight. I enjoy your reviews. They are to the point and jammed packed with information.

Just ordered this lever gun in the .308 Win. as I'm a big fan of this round. Just wanted to give you a big thumbs up for a great review and rundown on the Long Ranger. That one hole Gorilla group in the wind was fantastic! All groups were acceptable in my eyes for hunting deer, coyotes, or hogs. I'm putting a Leupold V3 3.5x10x40mm and hope it works.

Awesome review! I ordered mine two days ago from my hometown dealer in 6.5 CR with iron sights for $849. That may sound like an oxymoron but my reasoning is that if I take this hunting, and I will, and I have a problem with the optics I can always remove the scope and continue the hunt. And besides, a lever gun just doesn't look right without iron sights. I'm right handed but shoot lefty because I am left eye dominant and this gun should be perfect for me. Made in the USA! Go Henry!

Looks to be about the same 1-1.5 MOA accuracy as my Browning BLR '81 in 308 Win. One difference is the Long Ranger trigger doesn't move with the lever assembly during cycling like the BLR trigger does. That feature of the BLR addressed a non-existent problem and made for a trigger that was harder to work on and tune than a conventional trigger. I like the takedown feature of my BLR.

Jim Bonney Teddy was a cavalry man from his days with the Rough Riders...so, no, a Barrett wouldn't be his rifle of choice...one of the reason he gave for his fondness for the 1895 was it compactness and great ease of maneuvering...definitely not traits shared by the M107...or any .50 BMG for that matter...

Thanks for the quick reply, true easily is relative, that's why I was interested as I saw you had the bolt and trigger mechanism out. I also only saw a few screws in the receiver, I was hoping would be just a matter of removing these. I asked Henry for a link or copy of the instruction manual but haven't heard from them in the past. I hunt in a very wet climate and have had problems in the past if rifle cannot be taken apart between trips. Thanks again for review, you provide more info about the product than the manufacture.

IMO this is the finest "all around" medium to large game lever action hunting rifle for North America. Whitetail to Elk or even Grizzly the .308 will do the job. And now it comes in a levergun that is accurate out to Western type long ranges. They go for about $800 on Gunbroker and come with a no hassle LIFETIME warranty. If you love hunting with a levergun you NEED one of these.

Some people love bolt-guns. Some love pump-guns. Some love semi-autos. Others love leverguns and some of us love them all! :) I've hunted with leverguns in heavy woods since the early 70s. But the last 10 years I've been taking an annual trip out West and I always have carried a bolt gun for that longer range shooting. But I always wished for an accurate levergun chambered in a long range cartridge. This is certainly a niche-market gun but I'm just tickled pink at the idea of hunting speed goats in Wyoming with a levergun! :) The guys I hunt with will laugh themselves silly when I show up with this rifle for Antelope camp but they will stop laughing when I fill my tags just as fast as they do with their bolt-guns. If you love leverguns and love to hunt, you need this rifle. If we take suppressors of the "controlled list" hog hunters in Tx will fall in love with this rifle. Forgive me....I'm just an old fool for leverguns. Probably comes from watching too many cowboy movies in the 60s. :)

Also I think the Freedom Munitions rounds did not function well because I'm sure Henry used their standard receiver and it has never liked polymer tipped or longer rounds. they function best with like a flat soft point or something and I think it's because with a lever gun you have a set distance the bolt can come back because it is mechanical and not just an endless rear movement with a spring to bring it forward or something so longer rounds test the limit on feeding because that bolt can only come back so far unless you could extend the range of the lever throw

I'd like to see the base model include irons, and a threaded barrel. I don't really think there should be a tactical or upgraded one, just put those as basic features. And a stainless version would be awesome. If they drop a stainless one with iron sights, I'm getting it. I need a hunting rifle that isn't a milsurp. This will be an interesting competitor to the BLR.

you mentioned one of the advantages over the BLR is the trigger. BLR's are notorious for bad triggers (mine has a trigger job and is nice and crisp now) but there is another aspect you didnt mention that intrigued me. I saw you take it apart and show some of the internals. Is this thing easy to strip down? The second advantage (and only other I can see) seems to be the field stripping. Browning specifically tells people not to completely take apart the receiver. This would really intrigue me if it strips as easily as normal lever actions.

The one hole 4 shot group was totally impressive. It shows just what that gun is capable of. But the one critical change I would suggest to Henry is: PLEASE PUT SOME OPEN SIGHTS ON IT. It's a lever gun, I love levers and I love open sights. The cost of putting sights on that gun is minor compared to the additional market of people who will buy it. Having a lever gun that's as accurate as that one is would be heaven.

Thank you! The 1st review of the Long Ranger (and I've watched a bunch of 'em) that finally mentions what material the receiver is made from. Aluminum alloy, not steel. Is it your opinion the receiver is durable for long life and heavy duty service? Thanks.

It is a awesome looking rifle. Henry has some great looking stocks with good figure. But unlike what you said I prefer the Browning. I have a all steel BLR in 7mm-08. The trigger breaks at just shy of 4 pounds. I get around 1 1/2 MOA out of some of the cartridges like the Hornady match and performance series. I also prefer having sights as well. If something happens to the scope , you still have open s and sights. Now the Henry like I said I prefer their wood stocks over Brownings. Now in all fairness I have a earlier browning with that Hi gloss finish. I do not like the hi gloss. I prefer satin. And Browning has satin available on some of their BLR's. The take down feature is also nice on the Browning. The accuracy is about the same as my 7mm-08 . The Browning has the trigger mechanism contained within the lever which I have mixed feelings on. The Browning also has the trigger forward safety from the half cocked position. The rack and pinion system seems about the same on both. Would I purchase a Long Ranger? Yes I would but only if I could find a super deal because I know the Browninh quite well and can not really see where Henry has the advantage. One thing you may note on the Browning is that the lever doesn't really interfere with magazine. And a company I believe from Australia makes higher capacity mags for the BLR. That is another advantage the BLR's have over the Henry. The take down which is offered by Browning I am not sure if Henry has this feature yet? Like I said before. Put a Browning BLR with a steel receiver on the shelf next to the Henry and add say $200.00 more on the Browning .I would purchase that Browning over the Henry every single time even though it is at a higher price. Henry has peeked my interest lately. And I have been watching and waiting for them to come out with a idea rifle and then I will pounce on it.

I tend to agree with you on the sites. On the Henry Forums most of the guys are asking for sites and I believe HRA has even agreed to ship future versions with sites. I don't really see the need as I'd run it with an optic anyway. Front site might get in the way of your threaded barrel too!

I would love to have Henry build the same rifle in .338 Federal and .358 Win. The casing is the same for all three, .308 Win. Browning BLR still makes the .358 Win. The best, however, was the Savage Model 99 in .358 Win. I wish Savage still made them. Used ones cost too much.

Gorilla ammo...just north of me in Vero Beach! good stuff as usual! Maybe instead of a 2 piece base, a Pic rail. Or have one drilled to match the bolt pattern? I was always a fan of the Browning BLR...the comb is a bit low to me, and the stock has too much drop. This Henry looks perfect! Good review as ususal! Keep up the good work!

I've been waiting for henry to put out a large caliber lever gun. I'm a huge fan of lever guns (one of my favorites being the savage 99's) but I'm probably going to have to pick one of these bad boys up.

Close viewing of the video does show 4 shots into one hole. The Freedom ammo initially surprised me until you said you needed to move due to plants in the way. Without proof, I'm now confident that the bullets touched a leaf or two.

Ring distance and potential turret issues at the end of the video...easy fix is to put a rail on it...Henry has them on their site...with that said...mine has iron sights and I don’t have the issues you have, but to each their own, if you like guns, I like you... :)

i LOVE Henry, i have 6 (S00tch got me too a while back...) but guns like this where they try to bridge classes I feel like are impractical. to me a lever action is made for close to medium range with handgun rounds or medium rounds like a 30-30. 308 people are going to want extreme accuracy and long range. At a minimum I think they should have stuck with a tube magazine on a Henry. I guess I feel like you should try to do a couple things great than all things average.

On the extended mag. So one might only need to remove lever, heat up the finger guard in a smithy, flatten the frontal part (without trashing it), cool it and put it back?

That group with the Gorilla ammo is amazing, but ... it seems a bit problematic to me with this many eject issue. After see this video, I could not trust in this on a hunting when need fast repeating. Maybe they it would need a bit bigger, redesigned eject hole?
