My beautiful boy who lived to be 20 years old suffered from dementia. I watched him slowly go away mentally. At the very end, on the very last day I held him. He opened his eyes and where he would look at me blankly, he looked and his eyes lit up, he gave me his I love you sound which I hadn't heard in the last 3 years of his life. He kissed me one last time and slipped away from me. I miss him so much. Dealing with losing my friend and the last 4 years of his life with dementia was just heart breaking. I am a medical provider and the disease progression affected my boy exactly like it progresses in humans. I don't know if that equipped me to deal with it, but we went from joyous walks to wheelchairs and diapers. He was a happy demented boy until the last. In loving memory of my Cody who gave me the finest 20 years of my life.

One minute in and I'm sobbing because all the symptoms she mentioned, now I realize my late baby who passed when she was 17 had undiagnosed dementia. I thought all old dogs acted that way but now I know something was wrong with her poor brain. She had a seizure one night and that was the end. I miss her so much. It's been 4 years.

The hardest part of loving an animal is knowing you will have to witness their decline and eventual death. It's so heartbreaking. We love them the most we can while we have them with us.

It's great to see owner's acclimate to their animals needs, instead of giving them up! BRAVA!!

I didn't know that dogs could get dementia until my Emmie had it. She was about 13 at the time. Her behaviour had changed a little but I didn't realize there was a problem until the day she didn't recognize me. I immediately called my vet and was prescribed a supplement which helped. She would follow me every where in the house like she didn't want to be away from me at all. She passed away at 15. She was the best dog. I miss here so much.

My hound dog was diagnosed at 14, too. We were lucky that it was a slow progression so that he had two more years of happiness. As hard as it is, it’s also such an honor to be there for them to the end.

She'll let you know when it's time to do the humane thing for her. I had a cat with the same type of condition. When she started forgetting to groom herself, she couldn't remember where her food was or where the litter pan was. I'd constantly had to keep an eye on her. Once day she couldn't get up and just laid there urinating all over herself--it was heartbreaking. I cleaned her up, wrapped her in her favorite blanket and took her to the vet to be compassionately euthanized. I held her until she was gone. It was hard but would have been so unfair to try and keep her going.

Just went through a year of this with my cat, and she was deaf as well. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye about a month ago. We had her for 18 years. Miss her :(

She's living a good life for now, and it's wonderful she has Peewee by her side. Dementia is so devastating but Nicky is doing such a wonderful job adjusting things for Zoe. Hugs all around 🤗🤗🤗

I had a senior dog who came to me as a stray. She was a sweet old girl. She developed dementia after about 6 years together and I recognized it as such. She passed quietly in her sleep. I'm glad I was able to give her a comfortable, happy life in her senior years. Rest in peace Daisy.💖☺

Dementia is an awful thing. My 17 year old Staffy, a rescue named Molly, whom passed away back in January also suffered from dementia in her twilight years... getting forgetful, incontinent, staring into corners or just standing still for ages looking blankly at nothing or lost, etc. But she never forgot about me, was still always greeting and wanting to stay by my side where ever I went. She was my comfort as I was hers, and as she went I hope she knew she was loved and will forever be loved and never forgotten. Absolutely missing you sweetheart.

I had my dog Haley for 16 years. I got her at a kill shelter. She was opposite of everything I was looking for in a dog. She was big, she wouldn’t come near me. She was terrified, she had tons of hair I wanted a smaller dog that didn’t shed or shed very little. She was a chow chow and golden retriever mix. I still find little clumps of her hair around the house occasionally. I found out they were going to put her down that very hour. So I took her. She turned out to be the kindest and most well behaved dog I have ever had and I have had many dogs my entire life. Her last 5 days. I just laid with her abs slept with her. She let out a loud bark and passed in my arms. At the moment it was very sad and I kept occupied for weeks. I found it hard to be in the house without her. Looking back I am glad I had the luxury to be with her in her last moments comforting her. RIP Haley 1:30PM 01/30/2017. Daddy will always remember what a good girl you always were.

My mom's little Jack Russell, Milo, turned 18 last year and he had doggy dementia on a pretty steep decline. He had sundowners syndrome as well - as soon as it got dark he roamed the halls all night and barked at the wall. Poor guy, he was a real angel, and a rescue, and a big brother to her other Jacks!

Having a dog with dementia is really tough for the owners too. My dog was diagnosed with dementia when he was 13.5 years old and he would bark non-stop at the top of his lungs all night and most of the day too. And constantly roam in circles while he was awake. Once I timed his barking and he barked non-stop for 18 hours straight so it meant many sleepless nights for me. But we did our best to make him as comfortable as possible and I slept in the living room with him to make him feel safe and secure until he passed away a year later. I still miss him very much.

I lost my boy Fez in 2011 to this. He went deaf, forgot who his people were, and got stuck against a wall because he couldn't figure out how to turn around. This is a sad, sad thing to go through.

Lost my beautiful collie friend I had since I was a child 3 years ago and I still tear up whenever I get reminded. Had cancer and went blind, worst experience of my life was the last couple of weeks. I hope she knows I did all I could and I think about her every single day of the year. That dog was my everything.

I've heard of dementia in dogs, it's as heartbreaking to see them go through it as it is for humans. I hope Zoe's remaining time is filled with love and peace

I have a 15 or 16 yo dog now waiting to leave us as vet found a tumor. Given her age, we decided just to let her live out whatever time she has. Vet said 2 weeks. It has been 4 months. Other than being extremely fussy with food, she is still walking several miles with me and living her life as normal. I know we are fortunate to have her for so long but the thought of not having her around shortly always bring pain to my heart and tears to my eyes.

As sad as it is, I do love this. I currently have a 16 year old dog & she’s starting to lose it. I’ve lost my 16 & 17 year old dogs in the last 3 years. We’ve dealt with everything. But when I got my babies I said forever & I meant it. Thank you for loving her so much!

It's depressing, but knowing she is going to live her years with love and care is incredible! Sadly some people would just leave the dog somewhere to forget and die.. This family is wonderful

I LOVE the last thing she says !!! "Zoey , I will always be there for you". So many people have no problem surrendering their animals to a shelter when they get old because they don't want to deal with everything that comes along with a senior animal. Owning an animal is for life. People should think about this before even considering getting an animal. Animals are like family. They should never be abandoned . Especially when they need you the most. This dog is very lucky. He has the best human and home.

My dog had the same thing. We had her for 16 years! 12 years longer than expected... It was worth every day we got to have with her and the whole house isn't the same without her!

I just had to say goodbye to my Pittie after 13 years and I was totally devastated. Enjoy all of the time that you have left with her....sending hugs!

It’s great that they get along so well. They’re adorable. Peewee seems like a really smart dog, same with Zoe. I didn’t even know that dogs could get dementia. That’s horrible, she’s living a good life tho, and that’s what’s important.

My dog lived till he was 18. He had dementia too. He paced up and down a room for hours. He still recognized me even though he hardly had any site left. He still tried to bounce around in the garden sometimes. You immediately know the right time to let them go. I struggled with that thought for years, but i knew that day he looked scared and anxious and really sad. Zoe still looks really happy living her best life.

I had a dachshund that I rescued at the age of 4 that at the age of 12 started acting strange like going I to small spaces and wouldn't be able to get out, then I noticed sometimes she would mess inside which is something she never did. She would sleep in my bed next to me and start waking up and pacing the floor. Took her to the vet he said dementia. I was shocked because she was still so young and generally healthy. She must of had it for a while or it was a type that progressed fast because within 6 months she was so bad she used to love driving in the car now she would cry terribly and people would look at me like I did something, it was such a mission to take her to the vet I'd have to get somebody to drive so I could hold her and try and soothe her. She would poo herself and when I would arrive at the vet she would continue to cry for like 5 min because she would panic so badly. It was absolutely heartbreaking and awful. You eventually couldn't leave her for 5 min as she'd walk up to a wall and panic because she didn't know how to turn around and start crying and messing herself. Eventually I had to put her down as she was so distressed and confused all the time and eventually didn't even want to eat and she used to love eating she didn't even make 13 years and she was the love of my life, heartbreaking

I had a cat with dementia. He used to pace around the house at night like he was lost and would make this howling sound. My older dog is starting to show some cognitive decline and advanced arthritis. It's heartbreaking to watch this happen to our beloved pets. Zoe and Peewee are lucky to have this lady who loves them.

I'm in the same spot with my little girl. She was a stray when I rescued her, so they had to guess at her age. I've been blessed with 6 beautiful years with her, but I fear the end is coming too soon. I'm making her as comfortable as possible and loving up on her 24/7.

It's heartbreaking to know there's a time limit of how long you got with your pet. They are all on timers really. Soak up all the love you can because in the end that love is what makes every day, every minute, every second worth living.

We went through this with one of our pups. We had two dogs as well and that makes a big difference for the one suffering with dementia because they really rely on their pack mate to help them navigate a progressively confusing world. It was very hard making the decision when to let our pup go but one day it was clear that that day had come. My thoughts are with you as you navigate this challenge time.

Going through this with my 19 1/2 year old dog. CBD from the vet has helped in the evenings. As long as my dog is eating and happy, we go on. I’ll know when the time comes, my heart will be broken. 😢

I've had pets all my life, mostly dogs and cats. They become part of the family and it's so heartbreaking when they go. I think it's even harder when the owner has to decide for them that it's time- you can't let your faithful friend suffer. To me, that's the only downside of pet ownership. I have seen many elderly pets who are still physically well, though they have gone blind and/or deaf. Those pets can continue to enjoy life with their families, if adjustments are made for them. My last 5 pets were all diagnosed with ailments that were progressive and had no cure. It's so hard to say goodbye, but you know when it's time. I always ask the vet, "Is he in pain?" I don't believe it's fair or humane to keep a beloved pet alive when their quality of life gets so bad and they are in pain. I believe we should be with our pets at the end, if possible. I've experienced the gamut of last minutes with my pets: one bit me (she was scared), one "kissed" me (licked my cheek- he knew I was there with him and, I believe, he was comforted by my presence). They give us so much love and joy that we owe it to them to help them over the rainbow bridge when it's time. When I lose a beloved dog or cat, I try to remember what I have told my friends who are grieving over the loss of their pet. "You gave him a happy life filled with love, kindness and fun activities. He trusted you and you never betrayed his trust. You did your best for him when he was sick to keep him comfortable and have a good life for as long as possible. In the end, you let him go when life became too hard for him. He's gone, but your memories will remain. He will always be in your heart."

I have gone through this with 2 pups. There's a med called Selegiline that might help. One of my pups it didn't seem to make any difference at all, but the other it made a big improvement-the pacing, confusion, "sundowning" all went away, it was like turning the clock back a year. Time still gets us all, but with the meds we had almost another year. it ended up being heart failure that got him. (The downside is that it's kinda expensive, but... when you're only looking at a few months it doesn't matter so much.)

My girl is 17 and has had dementia for 3&1/2 years. She forgets she has been to the park before. The joy on her face with so much freedom is a wonder to behold. She loves life and that is all I care about.

Thank you for sharing Zoe’s dementia journey. My very senior and beloved dog Kiki had dementia for the last two years of her life, and it was heartbreaking to watch her cognitive decline, especially when it was coupled with physical decline as well (arthritis so walking eventually became very difficult, teeth pain, kidney disease, a heart murmur, eventually incontinence, and no longer eating her homemade dog food to manage her kidney disease ). Kiki’s constant pacing aimlessly around the house, especially in the middle of the night, and having to rescue her from falling into our swimming pool, when, before her dementia manifested, Kiki had 100 percent ability to avoid falling into the pool were very stressful. When Kiki stopped eating, we knew it was time, and she was about 17.5 years when she died on December 4, 2021. I noticed that Zoe’s dog collar is the same kind of collar (identical rainbow design) that Kiki wore, so seeing Zoe wearing the same collar and struggling with her decline moved me. I was happy to see that PeeWee is helping to keep Zoe’s quality of life good. My heart goes out to everyone who has ever loved and cared for a senior dog. Dogs provide us with unconditional love, and when they age, it becomes the human companion’s turn to crank up almost constant, selfless, and financially costly care giving. When we eventually have to let our beloved animals go, we are grief stricken, but of course we would do it all over again - the love that many humans have for their animal companions is that strong. 💖

I had a dog go thru this, and it's very sad to see. She did the pacing and lost wandering thing. She also started destroying the house after a while, pulling up carpets and gnawing everything in sight. Eventually the family made the decision to put her to sleep, and it was a heart wrenching decision to make. The dog was clearly miserable at that point. We discussed it with the vet, and he called it a kindness. I fought against it, cuz I would sit with her on walks, and she would put her head in my lap and she would sigh and I knew she was happy in those moments. But when she was left alone, the pacing and destruction would kick in. It went on for months before the decision was finally made. And now I'm tearing up and miserable. One of my greatest memories in life was watching that dog as a puppy discover snow. The pure, unadulterated joy she had... Loving dogs is a curse, in a way.

I watched one of my dogs rapid decline through doggy dementia. It was heartbreaking. Towards the end of her life she was either happy or scared. No in between. As a caregiver it reminded me of so many of my clients with alzheimer's.

Thank you for bringing awareness to this subject. I never knew this was possible. I have 3 senior dogs in my home and I am so happy to gave gained this knowledge. ❤

This put me in tears. How wonderful this person is to have patience with this situation. It’s amazing that even humanity doesn’t even have the patience for human people who have dementia. What's truly beautiful in here is they have a loving human mom. I mean, she got a deaf dog what tends to be a really hard thing to almost anyone. And this beautiful girl who is now going through her own symptoms of dementia, again, she is in the best care. It's wonderful to see how two dogs in need of special care actually got a human who can take it.

Letting them go is hard when their quality of life is gone but it’s the last act of love you can give them.

Our rescue girl was diagnosed with Autism. It was sad but it was good too. Sad for obvious reasons, good because we adjusted how to train her and have a guideline of limitations. 6 years later we are a happy family and going to be getting another rescue!

Our neighbor's dog suffered from dementia and he would wander over and walk into our house while I was unloading groceries. He was too confused to go home on his own, so we would keep a leash here to walk him back. Junior Mint was such a sweet, gentle soul. He passed away last year. His family really misses him, and so do we!

My 15-year-old Jack Russell girl was always a very shy dog -- unusual for a JRT. But she was strong and energetic and had a great life, hiking in the mountains and going on adventures. The last couple of years, she became deaf, and then developed dementia. She was still physically so strong; on her good days, we would walk as far as she wanted and I would think, maybe the meds are helping at last. But she always went back to her fearful, anxious mode, especially at night. The last few days of her life, she couldn't sleep -- just walked around, panting nervously, looking at me for help, which I could not give. A nurse friend of mine compared it to what the elderly experience at sunset in the nursing home: sundowner syndrome. It was so sad. My beautiful, beloved Tallaulah. I have a little senior rescue now, but I will always miss my quirky Lu.

My dog also has CCD. He is the first (and so far only) dog I have ever owned, because most of my family is allergic. The hubs gave him to me in the form of a homemade gift certificate "good for 1 dog from the ASPCA" on our first Christmas together. D'argo is 14 now, and we have been dealing with CCD for a little over a year now. It is to the point where everyday I wonder if it will be the last good day. I make his own special food in the crock pot every other week, puppy pads are all over the place, we have a harness for him to wear where we can carry him if needs be. Somedays he's fine, others he doesn't even know me. But his core is still there, a loving and trusting cuddle buddy. His tail no longer wags, but his kisses are still pretty constant. Your two dogs are so blessed to have you as their mom.

This happened to my sweet pup too. It’s like she woke up one day and forgot who we were. I spent the majority of her life neck deep in alcohol and drugs. She saw me lose everything and detox. Luckily the last year of her life I had finally gotten it together. I was able to take care of her after she always looked out for me. One thing in recovery you learn is patience. Have to clean an elderly dog who falls in her poop and then walks thru it at night is patience testing. True love is cleaning a dog at 4 in the morning. She went deaf and certainly was blind. But she was still my dog and my best friend. After a very long year and a fast decline in health the day came that we all dread. I woke up early and got her out. She was ready and so were we. I kissed her on her head and left for work. I passed the place I used to pick up. I knew if I went and got high id let her down. She crossed the bridge and ran to my dad. He has been waiting for a couple of years to see her again. I can’t wait to see them. I do carry them with me, memories of good and bad. I miss them so much.

Such an important point that's very quickly glossed over near the end - quality of life vs an owner's emotional security. My first 'grown up' dog Ben had dementia and working as a psychiatric nurse at the time it was very obvious before I went to the vet. Working with dementia human patients a good year or so before helped put my position into perspective. All patients with more advanced dementia had NO quality of life on a day to day basis... most felt either confused or were in fear or angry - usually a mix of the two. Always very simple, primal emotions. I didn't work there too long but it was more than enough to see what hell we put some people through for the sake of extending existence (not life) no matter the cost for a few more months or years - even to the expense of often breaking bones by resuscitation or and adding to the immense pains and pressures of daily suffering whilst these patients couldn't even communicate what is wrong or how they felt on the (or any) issue, let alone have any kind of dignity or autonomy over their lives. Deciding to have Ben put to sleep was one of the hardest decisions I'd ever had to make in my entire life - it's not like a dog can tell us what they want at all - especially one with dementia. However, when he'd forget to eat due to not remembering his surroundings, forgot to follow the people he knew on walks (he was a highly trained rescue collie and could walk himself) or forget visitors he knew and would hide away in the dark whilst starting to become incontinent (all progressing quickly in a matter of a few months) was when I realised - am I keeping him around for me or for him? It wrecked me for almost a year after making the decision - but so many people hold on and on and on to their companions for too long, usually shielding themselves from painful feelings over the pains already felt by their pets. I just hope that when I'm older, we have advanced enough in society to either have effective treatment for dementia (for both humans and dogs) or at the very least, be more understanding with the idea of voluntary euthanasia. After working over a decade with people who have been through some of the most horrific events you can imagine: dementia is definitely the worst.

Breaks my heart... we have to go through this with our elders, parents, pets. It's tough. I'm just happy that Zoe has had such a nice, happy life with her Mom and her family. When the time comes, their comfort will be in knowing she lived her best life and was loved dearly.

They often have cataracts and deafness. Both of those can very much cause dementia.

This has me in serious crying mode. These 2 doggies are extreme preciousness!! And the family’s dedication is what every pet needs. How hard and heartbreaking 💔 ❤️‍🩹 to see our babies health decline and then say good bye 😢. I’m still trying to mend my soul 2 years after my older girl 🐶 crossed the rainbow bridge, she was 17 years old. Then my other baby girl crossed 6 months ago 😔💔 at 12 years old, and I’m left with my 10 year old boy 🐶 that looks so similar to your pittys. It's hard to read the comments when my eyes are tearing up. I know my time is coming with my baby, and I've spent that last two years always asking myself if today is the last day would I regret not doing anything when I had the chance e.g. taking him for a walk, playing with him, skating him in his stroller (he just had surgery so no super walks allowed yet), visiting puppy dog friends... I'm so happy that Zoe has a mom who is willing to make every single day safe and comfy. And her devotion to a deaf dog is just as admirable. I wish the world had more people like Zoe's mommy.

I hear you. Mine is 17 years old, he's entirely deaf, cataracts (but still can see), has the shakes from getting Lime Disease many years ago and exhibits mild dementia. But he seems to be happy, he gets around okay and safe, warm and comfortable. When he's not then we'll do the responsible thing but until then we keep the old grey man around.

This is incredibly sad but also incredibly awesome at the same time… I really and truly commend you for taking these dogs in and giving them a loving home and continuing to grow/learn/adapt with them - I’m sure that it doesn’t seem like ‘work/xtra effort’ for you but to a lot of people just ONE of those dogs with disabilities would be a tough deterrent but you’ve really made their lives fantastic and as a fellow Pitbull owner and enthusiast and supporter I THANK YOU!

My pets are all under 2 year old and it’s heartbreaking for me to think that something bad will happen to them. I’m just glad that Zoe and PWee have you as their family and to know that they’re utterly loved.

Bless their hearts. Thank you for your story about this great pooch. We have a senior 13 yr old Aussie, Copper, who forgets what we are trying to do just between the house and the truck. But his little buddy, a chiweenie, keeps him active. These dogs are gifts from God. As I always say, bless their hearts and thank you God for these wonderful gifts.
