I too was one of those guys who just had a naturally high sprint (in the 90s), but I was able to take it to another level by doing sprint interval days (10+ sprints) and racing track at So Cal velodromes. Racing the fixies on track forces you to develop near max power from the saddle and at higher RPMs, better handling, and more comfort with touching/bumping other bigger riders which i found made me a better and safer crit racer/sprinter.

Your sprint numbers are absolutely insane. Give yourself more credit -- there are pro riders who will train for 15 years and never hit 1500w. If you can do 90% of your peak sprint numbers after a hard, fatiguing race, you will be unbeatable

This type of rider only suits for short crit. He’s heavy, not aero and less endurance. You cannot compare him to pro who trained for 15years its really really too far from him. That power suits for velodrome sprinter which most of them doesn’t have that huge endurance but can sprint for more than 2500watts
@ThePaulRobertDavis
@ThePaulRobertDavis Жыл бұрын
Big boy watts for sure! It seems like it's easy for sprinters to get stuck in the mindset of needing more power to win more races. Most of the time, though, it's not their sprint holding them back from more wins, but poor endurance preventing them from getting to the line with a good punch left in the tank. If you're pumping out 1750 watts mid-race, sure dial in your form, but just figure out how to get to the last lap in good position and keep doing on all the endurance work you need to get there fresh. Keep it up dude.

How much have your zones changed over that time as well? Just wondering how quickly your heart/lungs "cardio" adapted to the training sessions and achieved sufficient performance to start racing.

But dream big and then talk with people who can help you get there, just in case it’s possible. Because it might be possible. The meaning comes from the journey and the people you share it with but you have an unknown amount of big talent and you don’t want regrets when you are older. What probably helps your sprint the most (same for me) is your background as a pitcher. So much of pitching is in the lower half and over time, we have sneakily developed those muscles and ability to transfer power through the legs. I would also venture to say that you are good at golf too - and if not, you can absolutely smash a drive at the very least!

Those are great numbers. You certainly are blessed with some fast twitch fiber counts! fwiw - My two cents (backed by others!): Train for the race. If a weakness is "limiter" in your race, train it while maintaining strengths. I too am a natural sprinter. But I like long gravel races so my multi-hour threshold power is my limiter; that's what I train most.

EJ, did all of these new max sprint numbers occur after recently upgrading/changing your cranks and power meter? The calibration might be off and shifting the numbers higher. My SRAM Force AXS spider power meter factory calibration measures 9.5% too high. I had to change the offset to match a Tacx Neo 2T trainer, as the auto calibration was not correcting the power measurement. Try borrowing some power meter pedals to confirm the accuracy. Alternatively you just might find out the crank power meter is reading low. That being said, your sprint power and sprint power endurance are both exceptional. Plus you have the capacity to put in 1200w efforts repeatedly throughout your races. The results of your sprints speak for themselves!

Power numbers are what one would expect from a top end sprinter. Super high max wattage and trending down after 5mins to be more average(but still good) at the longer efforts. I'm opposite. Crap sprint(13/14w/kg) but good 20min power relatively (4.8w/kg). Just wish it was 6w/kg though!
@niklasbirksted8175
@niklasbirksted8175 Жыл бұрын
+1700 is not only cat1 level, it's world tour level. Peak Cavendish would hit around 23w/kg (and almost 1600 watts). I have no idea how on earth you can produce such a ridiculous amount of watts with such little training, it's insane EJ! Also, would LOVE for some more in depth analysis of your sprinting, so we can see your technique and position etc. Good job!!!
@cornishalps9870

Cav wasn't renowned for his high numbers. Being able to produce a sprint at the end of a 5 hour race is what is important to world tour sprinters.
@niklasbirksted8175
@niklasbirksted8175 Жыл бұрын
@@cornishalps9870 He was also light and aero as fuck, hence my focus on w/kg. Greipel did 1850-ish, still doesn't change that EJ's numbers compares to some of the best out there. Arnaud de Lie did 961 over 15 seconds in the Giro to beat Mads Pedersen the other day. This was after a short stage lasting 3 hours and 40 minutes. Also, I never implied that five hours would not diminish the amount of power EJ could produce, just that his raw numbers are world tour level. I don't think that's very controversial, just as it's not controversial to say that his loose hair should be costing him +20 watts, that his technique is below average and that I doubt he could sit in the pro peloton, let alone survive a sprint. But numbers are GOOD!!!!!

I don't understand how you can say with a straight face (although there is a smirk the whole time) that you dont know how your numbers compare, when youre flashing up data that has a category which compares you to, at various time intervals, world tour pros etc. Maybe it's because I'm not an american, and the whole golden retriever personality is lost on me (I do see how it can be charming), but I find this whole couch-to-crit season 2 very off - there is something funky and disingenuous about it all. Wasn't there a video recently where you pretended you'd never ridden a MTB before, despite admitting a MTB background as a teen, prior to your collegiate experience in baseball? I appreciate this is not the popular POV in the comments section either here or on Jeff's channel - but I can't keep watching these videos without getting my doubts off my chest.

I think your real FTP is way lower than 360W or so you mentioned a couple of weeks ago. If your best hour power is only 299W, your FTP (40 mins) is absolutely no way 60W higher. Even 30W higher would be a fairly drastic falloff from 40 to 60 mins. Extrapolated FTP from 20 min tests is quite often very inaccurate. Looks like it here. You have insane top end though.
