One of the most sexiest cars ever built

I like how you described the car and how neat the owner’s stories were. I have a red 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible with a white top and white interior. These cars do feel substantial and solid when you drive them. They don’t build them like that anymore. I loved the video.

I had a 70 OLDS Cutlass SX. It had the power seats and power seats. The car had a 455 V8 and the dual exhaust. The 4 barrel carburetor was not ordered and a 2 barrel carburetor was ordered for insurance purposes. The color was the Viking Blue but I remembered mine was darker. But the interior was white and that was spectacular.

Hey ! Good job sharing the history of a gorgeous 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlas 442 rag top w/ electric windows and door locks and power roof and seats w/ console shift. The Olds 442 was an upscale gentleman's type Muscle Car so because it was an Oldsmobile it could be optioned with power seats top and other luxury options.

Power door locks were also available in 1972 as an option also remote trunk release (located in glove box) ...these upgrades were very rare!!

I am the proud owner of my deceased Grandpas a Viking Blue 1971 Cutlass SX 455 4OO thd trans. Posi. 3.73:1 factory gearing .. dual exhaust … looks very very much like this ‘72 actually… mine just doesn’t have the 442 badges mine has tiny little SX emblems under the Cutlass name on the side of each front fender …. My dad passed away as well from Parkinson’s … Dad & I were working on it almost up until he died … Now, I am own my own with trying to keep all of my body work straight and smooth … Lord have Mercy…!! At least I do know how to paint …well, sorta …. With my old junk SATA gun.. lolol … he owned one of the finest body shops in town, his brother took it over and runs it now …mine is still under construction… it still runs great and will still break the tires loose each time it shifts …. Lol. Mine had ‘G’ heads I think mine is a bit meaner than the 72’ 455. I believe that the SX were even more Rare than the 442’s SX were only produced in 7O’ & 71’ and in very very low numbers like less than 1OOO… it was referred to as a ‘Towing Package’ yeah for hauling ass with ..!! Lol

We have a 72 Cutlass convertible it's not a 442 but when we're done it maybe a 442 clone we just love the car it's in the shop right now April 2022

Re: power accessories, you’re right only the higher end cars had power seats even windows or locks but power accessories were nothing new. At least 20 years before 1972.

It went Cadillac, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Chevy. That 442 has some nice options PW, AMFM, AC, Power seats.

This car is a lot better representation than what it would have been in 1972 as they really weren’t put together that well , also the 1972 was not supposed be this style because of a GM strike which delayed the Colonnade model change which came out in 1973 , that’s why the 71 and 72 are so similar . Great video. I don't much about 1960s or 1970s classics. It is great to learn. And a nice side story. Love to read reviews of Caddy and Lincolns and Buicks and Pontiac and other American makes of that era too.

Very well done and most enjoyable. However, one correction is that when the camera scanned the gauges at about 7:15, and the narration identified a tach . . . there was NO tach! Just the speedometer and the clock. You may have been thinking of the "tic-toc-tach" that some of these Cutlass' had, but this one only had a clock. Keep up the good videos.

That was the original radio that came with the car. I had a 1972 fast back 442 that was called a his and hers shifter

I stumbled across this when looking for 442 videos. I had a '72 442 and miss it still and just enjoy perusing the internet for them. Very nice review/story. And thanks for professing your faith...I'm a Christian as well. 1972 was a crossover year for automakers because of new emissions. But still, this thing was torquey with the 455!

Video: WELL Done! Great respect for the family story. This owner shows respect for the authenticity as well. The car: I want one! I don't want "anyone" though. Cars that old tend to get "molested". None of that impresses me. Authentic, factory proper, well optioned, and functional is what impresses me. The Oldsmobile 442, the Buick GS, the Pontiac GTO, and the Chevrolet Chevelle SS were all the same size class, frame and chassis. Several of this era muscle cars were bare bones though. Oldsmobile added those extra tweaks and I think that really makes the car. This is one of my all time favorites. It is tastefully finished. It does not look cheap. The functional hood, the trumpet tip exhaust with rear bumper cut outs, the color keyed SSII wheels, the sport mirrors, the 4 spoke rally steering wheel, the console & shifter, the accent striping, the power top and how it is all integrated make this one of the most attractive automobiles of any era of anything made. Oldsmobiles really had the option list that put their cars in a far better realm when compared to other competitors. Factory A/C: some hard core gearheads scoff at this - however, I live in the South! So I certainly concur that this is an A/C car. Ragtop is no excuse to me for omitting A/C. If I am going to have any car; A/C - non-negotiable! The Oldsmobile 455 engine: One of the greatest things to ever come out of Michigan. While that particular year version is detuned to 250 net HP, do not despair. First off all auto makers were being forced to put out lackluster HP numbers in '72. I think that was a crime. However, that 455 block was a Hoss! Tough, and can take a rebuild. Get it to someone of the Joe Mondello school. With a few internal tweaks, a correctly calibrated Q Jet carburetor from 1970, keep the OAI air cleaner, it can see 400 plus HP while retaining factory correct outer appearances. Great car, my dream car!

In the 70’s I had a 71’ Cutlass S with rocket 350’ 4BBL it was ok for a 18 year old. But my gf sister had a 70’ 442’ 455 4BBL it was scary powerful. Love these cars just can’t decide what I love more the Grand Prix or the Olds I’ll just tie them for first.

One would think that the rallye gage package with the clock and tach combo would be standard on the 442. But many didn't have it.

Nice video and nice car. Always cool when there is a story behind the ownership. Noticed the restoration took 4 years which seems a little longer than most, but the finished product looks great. Do you happen to know which shop he used for the restoration?

you're right and youre wrong there was a strike. the '73 was actually supposed to be the '72.

This was a nice surprise. My dad and I restored this car.

They had AM / FM. Factory ... The shifter is called a Hurst Duel Gate Shifter or otherwise known as his & hers it was a drag racing shifter so if you decide to shift manually you would hit reverse.. I have a '70 442 W-30 with 390 horse the last year for the high horsepower motor... Would be see under the hood... Don't worry I hade mine running 12:60 @ 102 m.p.h. for the quarter mile..

I took a look at some of the other cars and trucks you review and those trucks especially can't hold a candle to this car. You should do more old school cars, just my opinion I know everybody has one yada yada yada.

I owned a 1972 Cutlass Supreme convertible. It had a 455 with grooved factory front disc brakes. It was an automatic column shift with a bench seat. I regret selling. I have never seen another '72 supreme convertible with a 455. Has any one else??

There's no such thing as POUND FEET! This is a term made up by non-engineers/non-technicians who don't know what they are talking about. It means nothing, it has no definition. What these ignorant kids are trying to describe is something known by engineers as FOOT POUNDS, and it can refer to mechanical torque or electrical potential (Amps). In regard to mechanical power a "Foot Pound" is a unit of torque equal to the force of 1 lb acting perpendicularly to an axis of rotation at a distance of 1 foot. You're welcome.
