We're well-acquainted with Japanese trucks like the Tundra, Tacoma, Frontier, and Titan. But there are dozens of other Japanese trucks that don't make it to America because of the chicken tax. Here's what we're missing out on.

The most famous Hilux has to be the one the guys from Top Gear tried to destroy. A couple of local microbreweries use those mini trucks to deliver kegs, great to see them on the road around here in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Mitsubishi should really sell the Triton in the US. It has a 4A 4WD setting but I believe it's not a clutch based system but a torsen center diff system. Having a pickup on sale would make them some extra money they desperately need.

The problem is it will be more expensive than the frontier, unless they make it alongside it in the same factory using similar parts (frames, engines etc.).
@DeadAir21

The problem is that even if we didn’t have the chicken tax they’d still probably not bring it here. It’s massively underpowered compared with US trucks as the gas version only makes 178 horsepower it would be the weakest truck in the US by far. And Mitsubishi won’t make a US specific engine as they use a one size fits all approach when it comes to engines.
@damilolaakanni
@damilolaakanni 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeadAir21 well, since the frontier exists here with a new 3.8 V6, and the outlander uses the exact same engine as the Rogue, I see no reason why they can't fit the 3.8 +9 speed automatic transmission from the frontier as an option at least. Mitsubishi might just be too lazy to do it.
@DeadAir21
@DeadAir21 2 жыл бұрын
@@damilolaakanni even though yes they share platforms and engines with nissan they don’t share plants. Mitsubishi has there own and so does Nissan. And Mitsubishi has no US plants and probably never will again the triton will never come here. This video left out that these trucks he mentioned are made primarily for developing car markets like Thailand, Philippines, and Australia where power and tech isn’t important as it is in the US. So there’s no guarantee that these trucks would still be here without the tax.

Two things you forgot to mention about the Mitsubishi Triton: 1. It's also known in some countries as the Mitsubishi Strada or L200. 2. It shares its underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport/Montero Sport. Also, the Isuzu D-MAX has an SUV version called the MU-X while the Nissan Navara has the Terra SUV.

Most Americans wouldn’t consider Kei trucks real trucks. They have to have huge trucks that eat up lots of gas and have high towing capacity. Kei trucks make sense in Japan cause the roads are narrower and gas/diesel is a lot more expensive than in the US.

I feel the same way, they were trying so hard to emulate the Tacoma to the point were they lost their originality, Nissan North America forgot one of the reasons why the old Navara/Frontier sold so well here was because it was the only one that was actually a midsize pickup in the true sense of the word, there is alot of people out there that just wants a "small" pickup.

AGREED! I saw a 2022 Frontier while driving at night and it does resemble a Tacoma, nearly emulating it more so than daylight hours. Like the new Frontiers but you are correct, they needed a much more appealing/aggressive exterior styling approach especially in the American mkt; Nissan would sell far more if they did. Hoping the Nivara design will be the major refresh for future models.

This reason why America doesn't get them is because people here in America have gotten lazy and dumb. People here in America now want more SUV's that can just get you from point A to Point B, and they want it in Automatic because they want to be on their cell phones when they drive. This is one reason why manual transmission is going to be dead within the next 5 to 6 years here in the US along with 2 door sports cars, where in Japan, and many parts of Europe, they want a fun driving car. In Japan a staggering 42% of the drivers in Japan STILL drive a manual, YES A MANUAL. When I visited Japan back in 2018 1 out of 3 cars was manual, and most of the taxi services that picked me up in Japan where mostly manual. The same could be said in Europe, but once again here in America it's so much more different. Like I stated our country has become lazy, they want driving to be as easy as possible instead of being fun. Not only that driving a manual will cut out so many of the texting and driving accident's. I would love to see some one try to text and drive with a manual when they need to shift every other second stuck in traffic. It's one reason why I still drive a manual, and why I will still continue to import cars from Japan. I already have a R32 Nissan Skyline GTR, and a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III.

The HiLux has always being considered a TOUGHER and NARROWER cousin to the Tacoma ever since they were separated in the '80s. Same case with the (HiLux-based) Four Tuner vs. the slightly larger (LC Prado / Lexus GX-based) 4Runner. Now all bets are off when both pickups and both SUV's go to the same Tundra / LC300-based chassis as the SWB versions of them. Give all the same considerations to Nissan as the Navara and US-spec Frontier have gone their separate ways. It gives me even more pain to say that Nissan has a (Navara-based) Terra / 3G Xterra and we in the States don't have a Frontier-based 3G Xterra.

Some of it is styling, too. The HiLux is more minimalistic. It is almost more like the Gen-1 Tacoma that was here from 1995 to 2004.5. I had a '95. If it had a manual trans, I would not have bought the '05. It had flip out rear side windows, a sunroof, plenty of power. The 4.0 is def better, but I wish I had a chance to have the older one with a manual.
