i miss small trucks - i hate these giant monstrosities they call trucks these days. they're not only not practical for actual trades work, they are significantly more likely to kill a pedestrian or other motorist in the event of a collision. the only purpose such giant vehicles serve is to enhance the ego of the driver and make profit for the automaker.

That's literally all they are now.. grandiose expressions of their owners' mediocrity, drivers who roll coal to own the weak woke crywank libtards and demonstrate their superiority complex to everyone on the road. (I'm the Main Character) Certain trucks will always sell to a certain demographic, but they still have to market them aggressively beyond their target buyers. A good work truck is something old and reliable that you can repair yourself using plentiful junkyard parts. I knew a family who had three of the same van, it was a cinch to keep them all on the road because all the repairs and parts were the same.

Regarding your last sentence, that's not a bad thing. Drivers deserve to feel good and companies are in business to make money. Trucks are very practical for actual trade work as they get more capable every year. A 1500 can carry or tow what you used to need a 2500 to tow. Pedestrians should stay out of the road. Yes, I would buy a car that's more likely to keep me safe. The other driver can do the same if they think they're worth it.

@@bwofficial1776 I just mean, some of the people who mod trucks just to roll coal at bicyclists are kind of just inherently assholes and everyone in their club owns something similar. A work vehicle is one thing, being a douchenozzle on purpose because you need attention is another thing.

The poultry sales in the 1950's was responsible for us not getting these trucks in the 70's and 80's, but I'll bet it's Ford and GM lobbyists that has kept this tariff in place since that time.

⁠⁠@@HSstudio.YtchnnlUsually afaik most of the American trucks that are coming into Mexico to basically stay there forever, are usually trucks and suvs that got all their catalytic converters stolen in a strict US emissions state. Often reported stolen vehicles will have their new life in Mexico. And nearby the border people tend to steal some usually heavy duty trucks and sending them down south for cartel duty, so if there’s a surge of American 🛻 in Mexico, those 3 points above make up that reason 😅 cartels love them high trim model Fords I also heard if someone lives in a heavily nacro controlled state and in a certain region in Mexico, a newer nice truck will likely get stolen by force with fully automatic rifles pointed at them by the local cartel gunmen ruling in that area they patrol

Very interesting. I've always wondered about the jump seats and why they were so small. We had a Subaru Brat growing up and loved the rear facing seats but never understood why they were in there. I was going to mention the Transit 2010 - 2013 how they were imported as a passenger van and changed to a contractor van here but you covered it.

I had a Ranger from the early 90s that also had those tiny jump seats, and it was American made (in MN) and wasn't subject to the tax. The setup worked well for people who only rarely had to carry more than one passenger somewhere, and then only for a short time. The rest of the time, it was a place to put groceries and what not you may be carrying without having to have it out in the bed where it could be rained on/roasted in the heat/blown away.

The 2000's were hard on those poor Nissan D21s because teenagers would turn their dads' old pickups into shitty lowriders. They were everywhere in Canada, and because we had a 15-year import law instead of 25 (for Japanese Domestic), you still see many around. Lifted Hiluxes, Mazda B2200-B3000's, and a few old Datsuns too.

Just completed a nine hour road trip in Utah and Idaho in my D21. It’s 30 years old, has nearly 200k miles on it. Ran the 80mph speed limit or a little over for 9 hours like it was new.

As of about late 2020, Tacomas are no longer assembled in San Antonio, TX. Since then, they are made in two plants: Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California (near Tijuana) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Guanajuato (near Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato). This change was done to accommodate the new generation Sequoia being built alongside the 22+ Tundra since they share the drivetrain and overall design.

Might as well mention this while I am at it: NAFTA exempts the 25% duty imposed on light duty pickup trucks that are made in Canada or Mexico. As of today, your choices for buying an American-made Foreign-branded pickup include: Nissan Frontier, Nissan Titan, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Toyota Tundra & Honda Ridgeline. Of those, Nissan has been doing it the longest since mid-1983 and was the 2nd Japanese maker to construct a plant here in the US in Smyrna, TN originally for those Datsun 720, Nissan D21 Hardbody and first generation D22 Frontier trucks. Frontier production has since moved to Canton, MS since 2012.

Regarding the loopholes, it's your duty as an American to exploit loopholes. On the other hand, US-market trucks tend to be bigger and safer and more capable. Midsize trucks like the Hilux and Amarok would be nice but kei trucks aren't very safe and would likely run afoul of many other regulations. While we're at it, repealing the 25-year import ban would be nice. Even rolling it back to 15 years like Canada would be an improvement.

Big pickup trucks are not safer. Crashing against a smaller vehicle you'll be fine, but crash with another equally sized truck or bigger? You're toast. Or if you hit a smaller vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian, they're toast.

The biggest and best thing we can do to increase road safety, is to ‘reteach’ driving. There’s a lot of campaigns and advertisements that go to pushing something - and catches on - so why not do that for better driving habits? Staying out of the left-lane (passing-lane) unless you’re passing, using your turn signals before you make actual lane switches, teach zipper-merging for better traffic flow, etc. Things like that will work-out - lot of the tailgating and swerving through traffic, so that goes without saying. Better crash-safety is good for the passenger, but preventing crashes entirely (or at least greatly reducing points of encounter) is a lot better.

Because US and Canadian regulations are mostly similar, plus they got the USMCA trade deal, meaning they get tax exemptions on US and Mexican made trucks.

@jaysun3149 Mexico follows both ECE and FMVSS regulations. However, they passed legislation to lean more towards FMVSS so there's a chance that the Hilux days are numbered in Mexico and they fill the spot it leaves with low trim Tacomas, which are built locally.

We have a local dealer who sells the "K" trucks. He sells them brand new for $7500. How ever, they can not be driven on the roads, because they have not been DOT tested, for safety. I say, if a person wants to buy one, even though it may be unsafe, let them buy it and drive it.

Honda seemed to be the only Japanese manufacturer in the late 70s without its own truck line, until the Ridgeline's debut in February 2005. Shortly after the chicken tax was imposed in December 1963, Congress passed the Automotive Trade Act of 1965 which was ratified by the Canadian government, establishing a tariff-free trade zone in the United States and Canada for vehicles and automotive equipment. Ford began truck production at its new Oakville assembly plant in response to the trade agreement, allowing for truck exports to the states.

As always I enjoyed watching. But to be honest there have never been real European trucks. Yes there was the VW Caddy and the Amarok for a while but that is about it. The Mercedes truck you showed is not a real Mercedes but a rebadged Nissan. The US is fat better off with trucks.

Those who wish it to remain in place are against the idea of imported light pickups and kei trucks because of their perception that competition (poorer consumers / fleets who would buy alternatives) would hurt their domestic truck sales.

The major US manufacturers have very big deals with vehicular-oriented companies and services who are contractually obligated to purchase their fleets from those manufacturers.

@@brandonblanco8379 Yes. The tax hasn't been repealed because it favors domestic monopoly. Diversity and competition would help the lower and middle class get ahead, but not in the way that the monopolizing manufacturers want because they would stand to lose profit on new vehicle sales.

The chicken tax is not the reason trucks are big but EPA rules. Smaller trucks which is less fuel efficient than comparatively sized sedans get hit with a big penalty, but large trucks get an exemption. This video is misinformation.

The European pickups are not important other than the Amarock there aren't many. You do miss the importation of European vans and trucks. Most importantly you miss the importation of global pickups, usually powered by a turbodiesel that would have been prohibited by the US emissions laws, which amounts to another trade barrier. These pickups include the Ford Rangers with turbodiesels; the Toyota Hilux, 79 series Land Cruiser, Lite Ace, Hi Ace; Nissan Navara, Atlas; Isuzu D-Max, the Mazda BT-50, the Mitsubishi Strada or Triton. Other than the Land Cruiser, The base model pickups are priced much lower than the US pickups, even when you compare the global Ford Ranger to the US. Another consequence is the non importation of pickup derived SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, the Isuzu Mu-X, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the Nissan Terra. A Hilux with a 2.8 Turbodiesel will cost much less than a Tacoma but will out torque it and still deliver better fuel economy.

- the US also have turbodiesel-powered trucks that are BIGGER & more POWERFUL such as Ford's Powerstroke & GM's Duramax. In fact, most of the world's pickups have engines that are 3L or below in size unlike in the US or Canada that has 6+ liters of diesel engine displacement so it's not because of "US emission laws" that prohibits those Hiluxes or Navaras but rather it's the price of diesel as well as EPA corruption. - the US also has it's own SUVs that are BIGGER than kost of the world's SUVs, just look at the Cadillac Escalade or the Jeep Grand Wagoneer & they're also more advanced and packed with more tech
