Rick (Humphrey Bogart) prepares the travel papers for Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) and Victor instead of himself, and says goodbye.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
One of the most beloved American films, this captivating wartime adventure of romance and intrigue from director Michael Curtiz defies standard categorization. Simply put, it is the story of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a world-weary ex-freedom fighter who runs a nightclub in Casablanca during the early part of WWII. Despite pressure from the local authorities, notably the crafty Capt. Renault (Claude Rains), Rick's cafÃ (C) has become a haven for refugees looking to purchase illicit letters of transit which will allow them to escape to America. One day, to Rick's great surprise, he is approached by the famed rebel Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) and his wife, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), Rick's true love who deserted him when the Nazis invaded Paris. She still wants Victor to escape to America, but now that she's renewed her love for Rick, she wants to stay behind in Casablanca. "You must do the thinking for both of us," she says to Rick. He does, and his plan brings the story to its satisfyingly logical, if not entirely happy, conclusion.

Bergman was actually quite nervous to perform with Bogart, because he was already a huge star and had just done The Maltese Falcon, which was a great hit. And she only done a couple of smaller movies before this. Bogart on the other hand said that he acted in Casablanca like he did in any other movie, but he did admit that he couldn't help feeling romantic towards Bergman whenever she turned her beautiful face towards him to say she loves him :-)

For me, the two prettiest actresses were Bergman and Bacall, with Bacall being the one that I would have picked to produce the most sturdy offspring. Like Steve McQueen, he died young, but had lived 100 lifetimes of adventure.

Claude Rains is often overlooked. Yes, he is the foil to Humphrey Bogart. As Bogart become virtuous, Claude Rains stands in opposition--as corrupt. But at the very end "Round up the usual suspects", and tossed the Vichy water into the waste bin. Renault and Ric grow together.

I agree. Great writing. And they composed it as they filmed it. The whole filming they didn't know whether she was going to go or stay. Once this scene was filmed, the conclusion was easy. It's a masterpiece.

But how much film dialogue is truly realistic? The idea of a great film is to go beyond our normal circumstances and acheive something much more evocative. Your comment about one-liners has some merit. But would you prefers actors to quote common language that you hear on the street everyday? If so, just go outside and walk around. Remember - cinema is the art of suspension of disbelief.

@@markblunck2692 A lot of Woody Allen movies have lines of small talk that’s realistic and boring. But then he artistically incorporates some good lines. To me, that’s a better balance than what you see in old Hollywood movies and blockbusters

It's sad how no one ever mentions the director of Casablanca - Michael Curtis . Casablanca wouldn't be what it is without him . It's his masterpiece. Of course the actors are amazing.

Sadly its always about the actors, yet everything you see on screen is done by the director. The only director that would get more praise than the actors, was Alfred Hitchcock, and that was only because he opened on every episode (Alfred Hitchcock presents), and did cameos in his movies.

I like how they both have shiny eyes in this scene. Ingrid's shiny eyes are obviously because she is tearing up but you can notice Bogart's eyes are a little shiny too, like he's feeling moved for real looking at her tearing up. Makes it feel very authentic. I remember staying up one night to watch this movie on TV when I was still at school. It was being broadcast in the middle of the night lol and I wanted to watch this classic. I did the same with Sunset Boulevard too. It was worth it!

Or, it could be that they were filming outdoors at the Van Nuys Airport, and, between the fumes and the usual Los Angeles smog, their eyes couldn't handle it. (When you get a chance, look up Allan Sherman and "Van Nuys.")

He was telling her to go and when she started crying, he said "Now, now; Here's looking at you kid" and I always took it as him saying to her: "I'll always remember looking at you, times we shared". When you are in love and you miss someone when they are away, you think about those moments you looked at each other; seeing their face cuz you remember it so well. "Here's looking at you kid" is: Beautiful I will always remember your face so when you miss me just know I'm always looking at you just as I did when you were near me.

That was beautifully put, I say that to a man that I love. It's kindof funny because it's me the women saying Humphreys line. But I must say it's fitting for my scenario, it's simple but it's a loaded statement of declaration. He didn't know what it meant, he had never seen casa Blanca and so I asked him if he'd watch it when I buy it and he said yes. It's funny how something can mean so much.

The most bitter-sweet line of dialogue ever! Breakes my heart every time! Sorry if my English is bad. IM from Sweden. I understand english as if it was my native language, due to school and reading books in english all the time, but writing it a bit hard. Talking too! Ingrid Bergman had no accent compared to me! The feeling in this scene is something potent. Anyone who has had to give up a relationship for undue corcumstances can relate to the pain and fear of letting go on display in this scene. Brilliant.

Oh God, what artistry. I'm 76 years young and watching movies for at least 60 of them and the last 5 minutes of Casablanca is epitome of that noble profession. Yet it's the passage of time that makes it so good and maybe that's because of all the mediocrity we have had to endure along the way ?

I'M 78 And i have to say I love the old black & white movies. Not just because there are no swear words but their are so many of them that are classics today like African Queen or the WW2 movie Sahara which is much better than the remake with James Belushi . But i have to say I enjoyed the remake also.

They really stopped making great films after the 90’s. Everything before the 2000’s in film were made with an artist behind the camera. Now they’re done by focus groups and statistics in order reach every demographic to maximize profits. The art is gone from Hollywood and it’s a dam shame.

I watch Casablanca on average about 5 times a year and love it every time, my favourite scene is the one where he lets the young man win at roulette so his new wife won`t have to spend time with Louie, when she thanks Rick, He says, He`s just a lucky guy. goodbye Rick you old romantic you.see you in heaven.

Bergman's eyes... Just watch the whole scene. Niagra Falls in Bergman's eyes, and she only lets a drop fall out on her lower eyelash at the end. Now that's acting at it's finest. And you would never know... unless you were an actor or knew that the human brain has dozens of times as many neurons devoted to picking up subtleties in a human face as it does for anything else. Sorry to spoil it for you, but that's why you can tell a great or good portrait from a mediocre one. And that's how you can tell a great actress from an OK one. And that's the secret behind why this is one of the most romantic film scenes of all time. There's no way to fake that... because we all know how to spot real feeling in the face. Film actors don't get credit for talent like stage actors, but the ability to show the subtlety that Bergman shows here... just supernatural.

While more than half of the greatest films of all time were not American films, this is one of the 5 or 6 that would make such a list. I've seen it many times, made at a time when acting and direction were more important than stupid special effects. This film will never get old.

This movie really wouldn't be the same if they had made it today. They would've made Victor a jerk so she could end up with Rick, stopped the Nazis right then and there so everyone would be safe, and all these other contrived situations to get a "happy" ending. But, for a WW2 audience; a story about nobility, sacrifice, duty and honor for a cause and high ideals--- that created this unique and heartbreaking masterpiece.

I love this movie. Ilsa prepared to give her life for Victor, but Rick gives his life for Ilsa and Victor - once he understood what happened. This is a very deep movie, well written, well acted, and relevant to life. Very beautiful.

Maybe. I do think Casablanca is the greatest drama of all time. As an end, I always liked the penultimate scene of Angels with Dirty Faces where Pat O'Brien playing a priest, goes to the prison to speak with his childhood friend, a gangster on death row, played by Jimmy Cagney, to ask him to act yellow when he was taken to the chair, so that the Bowery Boys wouldn't worship him. I don't remember the exact quote perhaps, but it was something like - "It's the kind of courage you, me and God will know about." I was an atheist and shed tears as a little boy at the line.

People that don't understand the lines either never seen the movie, or expect phrases from the 1940's to match with today's speech. You don't question why people in Shakespeare talk to each other the way that they do, do you? You just accept it for it's time period, Same should go with this, and same goes with us 60 years from now or whatever.

This is how you light one of the world's most beautiful women in the film's most emotional moments. Superb cinematography combined with her wonderful acting. Those close ups are a work of art and have endured for 75 years for a reason. It doesn't get any better than that.

The first time I saw Casablanca was in 1978 at the University Theatre in Berkeley, Ca. By that time the theatre was old and fairly run down, and had taken to showing only "classics", but it was still in its original "widescreen" configuration. When this scene was projected onto that "silver screen", and that incredibly beautiful face with the tears clinging to her eyelids appeared some 30 ft. tall, I literally stopped breathing. More than 40 years have passed by, and that face STILL takes my breath away.

I just saw Casablanca again about a week ago, I've probably seen this movie 15 or more times and have never gotten tired of watching this great movie. Ingrid Bergman with Humphrey Bogart it doesn't get any better than that. This is Bogart's best role ever he was 44 at the time of the picture and Ingrid was 27. One of my favorite movie's of all time.

Nobody can, becasue when 'one' becomes a body it means that they are dead. You have not advanced in the fluency and knowledge of the English language far enough to have learned the difference between Someone Somebody / everyone everybody Know that you will find somebody and everybody at the cemetery. One is alive - One is unique and there is 'no one' like you and the never will be When you are dead and become somebody there is no replacement. Pugh is a familiar name. When I was age 13 (that was before your parents even met) I had a girlfriend with the same family name. When I visited her family home, she would demonstrate her skills at making scrambled eggs. That was well over half a century ago, yet I remember her well.

What's so special about this masterful movie which I just love is that in any close up of the actors, you can actually see the tears in their eyes. I don't know if it's the black and white coloring of the film, the lighting, or if it's just the performance, but it sure as hell made this movie more impactful and emotional. I love this movie!

Casablanca and Key Largo are absolutely two of the very best movies that I have ever watched in my entire life. Bogart was a one of a kind class act guy. He had the style, the one liners, and the cool mannerism that works for all generations. There will never be another like him.

A true classic. Exceptional when you consider it was filmed in 1942 on film and in black and white. One of the best in my book for actors, acting, cinematography, music etc. And then there are these great lines - "...Here's looking at you, kid" and "Play it again, Sam."

A more moving ending? I took a girlfriend to watch this in North London many moons ago, only to find it was on TV the following night...but the whole cinematic experience surpases watching it on the 'box'. A truly incredible film in many ways. Dialogue/acting/charismatic leads/music score/Armstrong/lighting and cinematic style....

The first time or two I saw this movie, I was just a kid and certainly didn't understand the power and brilliance of it. The dialog in this scene is simply amazing. The phrases, the pacing. It completely holds up now without feeling "old fashioned" at all. I grew up in the 60s, so I saw this film as a teenager in the 70s. Like all 70s teens, I watched all the new movies as they came out. But my answer to "Who's your favorite actress?" was "Ingrid Bergman"... and it still is.

Three of the most powerful scenes ever in cinema: 1) the Casablanca Airport scene, 2) the Casa Blanca "A Kiss is Just a Kiss" scene, and 3) the "Play Les Marseilles" scene. If you hop from one to the other without bursting into tears, well good for you. You've never loved and lost and loved and lost again.

The dialogue/writing is so good in Casablanca that it makes me watch the scenes over and over again on KZfaq. I truly believe it’s one of the best films of all time.
