Wow who would have thought Kansas City, Kansas would look this beat up?
Mr. Beat's channel: / @iammrbeat
Kansas City, Kansas is a very complicated place right now. And that makes it worth talking about. As you can see, KCK as they call it - really isn’t really that interesting. The downtown area is certainly not very stimulating. You could call it kinda rundown. I’d call it - blah. There aren’t a lot of tall skyscrapers on this side of the river. There aren’t a lot of condos or apartments downtown, either.
There isn’t much here jobs wise, nor is there much here for entertainment. It’s kinda weird to see so much going on across the river in Kansas City, Missouri, but so little going on over here on the Kansas side.
There’s a lot of poverty on the Kansas side, but you won’t see a lot of homeless people on this side of the river. Probably because they adhere to common sense laws. Vagrancy and loitering aren’t tolerated as much as they are on the west coast. Cops tell them to move along.
About two-thirds of this state’s population lives in the Kansas City metro area. But that doesn’t make it fun. I mean there’s things to do here, but people complain that places close early. Last year, one website ranked the most fun cities in the country, and Kansas City, Kansas didn’t even crack the top 182. What the hell.
Kansas City, Kansas gets no respect. Whenever you Google something about Kansas City, most of the results are about Missouri. I mean that’s where all the sports teams are located. And technically, this is a KCMO suburb.
But when compared to the rest of Kansas, this place is a blast!

Wow, Mr.Beat, I had absolutely no idea that you had taught at Blue Valley West! I went there for school and fun fact, I actually played tennis all four years of high school. There is definitely a sense of obnoxious elitism in the southern Johnson County area, and similar to you, whenever we would go up north for a tennis meet, etc, especially like places in Mission and Shawnee, I knew many people that would look in disgust and call it the "ghetto", even though the neighborhood was not even bad at all. But because so many of them were raised in southern Johnson County, living in a half million home with a Mercedes Benz etc, for all of their life, they begin to become bubbled and I know many people who have that superior Johnson County mentality.

I lived in the KCMO suburbs (LS) for 12 years then moved to rural KCK 4 years ago and I love it here. JOCO is within 20 minutes and KCMO within 20 minutes but I'm surrounded by farmland when I'm at home. It's honestly the best of all worlds. I've lived all over the US, every where from Seattle to New York to Miami/Ft Lauderdale, Memphis, Chicago and Atlanta and the podunk towns in between so maybe it's just because I'm ready to settle down, although I also know that I just happened to stumble upon a great tucked away area that most people don't know about, but there is truly nowhere else I'd rather be. As far as I'm concerned, please keep making it look bad cause that keeps the bad people away.

I live in KCK and you're not wrong, but the picture isn't as complete as we'd like. We have an awesome lake in the city limits with lots of hiking trails and boating. My wife and I spend a lot of time there. The Legends area actually has a lot going on. It's not just outlet shopping. They are building a Margarita Ville near the legends. One of the best parts about living in KCK (on the west side) is that it's clean, quiet, and safe. It's also within a half hour drive to Johnson county or KCMO. North east side KCK... I usually don't even drive through there. There's not much of note and that's where most of the violent crime is. Thank you for the video and best wishes

Spending only three days in Kansas you definitely didn't get the whole picture of KCK. I was born and raised here in Wyandotte County and have lived here all my life. No, there's not a lot to do here and there are a lot of places that are rundown, but you missed whole neighborhoods that are lower income but not rundown. You did bring up that Quindaro Boulevard used to be the place to be and that it used to be the place where doctors and lawyers lived, but you didn't bring up anything about the Westheight neighborhood which has some big beautiful houses that is also where a lot of doctors, lawyers, politicians, and business owners lived. You also didn't talk about Central Avenue being the main thoroughfare at one point in time. There used to be a lot of family owned businesses up and down the avenue. Minnesota Avenue was just like Main street in KCMO when my Mom was a child in the 50s and 60s. There was a Jones Store, a Hartzfeld's, a Dolgin's, and a Katz drugstore. My Grandmother and my Mother used to tell me all about Minnesota Avenue when I was a child in the 70s. Maybe you should stop and talk to some of the people who live in the areas that you're commenting on so that you can actually get the whole picture and not just go on what it looks like on the outside. Other than that, the video showed a lot of what Kansans love about living here. Thank you for shining a light on us, when though it is somewhat unflattering.

I lived in Johnson Country for almost a year in the late 1980's. I lived there for free because I worked for an IT consulting firm and we had a client there. So, I got my car, apartment, food, etc. on the firm. That was one of the greatest years of my life. I lived in a new apartment on the edge of Overland Park. Right on the edge, like if you turned North you got to the high-tech job in minutes, but turn south you hit a dirt road through a corn field in seconds. I loved it there. And, the Kansas City metropolitan area is rather huge, with a lot to explore, at least for a while. The best part was that all the land looked the same. No huge visible landmarks like mountains, lakes, etc. It was so easy to get lost, so I got really good with maps (this was way before cars came with compasses, much less GPS.)

This is my hometown. Grew up here, on the Kansas side. I’m what they call “An original Dotte”, meaning from Wyandotte County. The most interest spot I believe to visit (on the Kansas side) is the Huron Indian Cemetery. Other than that, it’s way more interesting to cross over the bridge to KCMO. I once worked for “C Properties”, a man who believed in the development of KCK. He had several investors, but when he started losing bids on comm’l building rentals, it all started to fall apart. No one else seemed to believe in it as much as he. Thanks, Bob, where ever u r now, for that great opportunity back in the day.

I grew up in Wyandotte county/KCK in the 50's and 60's. On my mother's side my great-grandparents were married there in 1899 before it was known as KCK. My grandparents lived near 11th and Armstong and my mom grew up there. Just one street over from Minnesota Ave which is shown here. From the 1890's to the early 1970's KCK was a growing thriving dynamic community, and it is sadly now only a shadow of what it once was. In the early 70's Indian Springs shopping mall was opened and in turn it emptied out all the stores on Minnesota Ave some moved to the mall while others closed. In fact, collectively suburban malls drained downtown KCMO as well. Thus, KCK had its heart torn out and it never recovered. But the early 70's seem to mark the end of an era not just for KCK but for America. The rise of suburban malls and large discount stores. For example, Venture and K-Mart. Who would eventually in turn give way to Walmart. The mom-and-pop stores plus the five and dimes were dead. Again, KCK had its heart ripped out of it and it never recovered. Such is the way of change. As it has been said the one constant in life is change. And now the malls are dead. The 1970's saw rapid decline in KCK. I saw it happen in front of my eyes. Too bad this video cannot show what a wonderful community it was before the changes the 70's brought about the decline. Indeed, we knew that we were a suburb of KCMO but like all the surrounding communities on both the Kansas and the Missouri side we felt apart of Greater Kansas City. The heart of KCK shown here of the buildings in decay and decline I saw in their glory days. Yes, this video shows the current situation, but it doesn't show the great past KCK had!

Growing up in KS, I always heard from out of staters, how boring the landscape is - especially how flat it is. Well, Kansas City, Kansas isn't particularly flat. No mountains, but lots of bluffs and hills.. And then I visited southern IL, MN, DE, FL etc and I'm thinking, "Now these places are flat! Why do they call KS flat? " It is true that western Kansas doesn't have a lot of variety and if you decide to drive from KC to Denver, it can get boring (including eastern CO) but there are beautiful places in KS. My favorite is the Flint Hills - especially around March. I used to drive the I35 during spring break from Dallas, where we were than living, to KCK to see my mom. I always looked forward to the Flint Hills.

That legends area actually had the top three tourist destinations in the state of Kansas at one time. Between the speedway, Nebraska Furniture Mart, and Cabellas when it first opened. There was also a schliterbahn water park until the tallest water slide in the world decapitated that kid. They also have casinos and then the outlet mall part of it along with the soccer stadium and a minor league baseball stadium. So there's a lot going on with it. KCK and Wyandotte county actually share a unified government and overlap completely. Since the legends area went in KCK has improved tremendously, but it's coming up from a pretty low low in the 80's and 90's.

Kansas City got its name from being named “Town of Kansas”. Kansas territory was about 20 years from forming when the place was founded. But much before that it was a small stop on the Mississippi River. While KCK may indeed be boring, Village West is a lively shopping district. It is much more than ‘just’ the speedway and the legends outlets. Near the state line, KU medical center is there. And is one of the country’s few ‘comprehensive’ cancer centers.

I am with David. There are some areas you did not hit upon in Wyandotte County that would give a better picture of the area. There is strawberry hill area just off the downtown location that has some large victorian era homes with a lot of history. Last I knew there was some home restoration going on in that area. There is also a housing area off around 34th or 35th and State Ave. that has some large historical homes, (one of which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright). For the most part even the poorer areas of town tend to be pretty clean as far as litter goes. You did not seek out Wyandotte County Lake, which has a two way road running 7 miles around it. It is beautiful and very wooded with recreational areas and a good number of boating docks. Quiet fishig allowed, pontoon boats small boats, and sail boats also welcome, where as speed boats and water skiing are not allowed. If you love nature and a quiet place to fish or picnic, this is where you go. Yea, this side of Kansas City is not quite as cosmopolitan as some would like, but you don't have to travel all that far to find the interesting entertainment you may desire. All in the city of the same name, no matter which side of the river you live on.

Hi Nick. I served my mission for the Mormon church in KCK, KCMO, and OP in the 1990s. Loved every minute of it. It was common to work out in a park that was the scene of a murder the previous week. After I later drove through ST Louis, then all of KC in both states looked richer than Mississippi River cities.

Lakeside dirt track raceway. 2 casinos. Memorial Hall, home to lower level wrestling. Several of my neighbors have horses. WYCO Lake, is the home field for the Kansas Univ., women's crewing team. The publicly owned BPU, keeps the water and light rates low. Only bad weather is the very rare tornado. A few low areas do flood in heavy rains, but they are mostly industrial areas.

The best place to live in KCK is not Juniper Gardens 🤦‍♀️ but we have some way too expensive rent for the places by the legends. More accredited schools than KCMO but safety will always be an issue at the highschool level. There are some areas downtown where they are building new houses by DCF and the courthouse. You want to see where Kansas is growing faster than anywhere else? Basehor Linwood school district, just outside Bonner springs, off K32, Leavenworth County. They took the farm land and have started building houses and putting in new schools. Olathe has its ghetto, been there all these years, I'd know because my ex husband came from there and I didn't know that was what they called that area...

I live sort of in the center with the north part oldest, the center about 30 years old and the far southern reaches being built right now. Lots of sprawl and franchises. Coming back we went thru these cities again and when we hit Nashville and Chattanooga, it didn't look too bad in comparison. Johnson county is NOT part of KCK. KCK people proudly call themselves a “Dotte”. I find it unfair to compare KCK with outlying cities. Yes, KCK is not what it use to be. Back in the 60’s, the downtown was very busy. I have great memories of shopping in those many stores as a child. I agree that people started to move west, due to wanting to be a part of suburban sprawl, thus creating the closing of stores and businesses in the downtown area. However, there are still areas in eastern Wyandotte county that are still quite vibrant, ie- Strawberry Hill and the Cathedral neighborhood. Anymore, THE place to go is western Wyandotte county with the Legends, the racetrack, Monarch’s baseball and Sporting KC. Western Wyandotte county IS STILL KCK.
