In this video I repair and replace my power steering hoses on my 1995 GMC Suburban. Both the pressure hose and return hose are being replaced. I was having an issue where the pressure hose was leaking/sweating from the threads and rather than trying to temporarily fix it I decided to search for new high quality power steering hoses. I was able to find a good set by a company called Edelmann which included an 'Elite" version that's supposed to be higher performing than a standard hose. All this work is being done on my GMT400 1995 GMC Suburban K1500 though this should be similar to the 1988-98 Sierra, Silverado, Tahoe and Yukon.

Real world video. Thank you. So, I guess...after watching this and learning from your video... I guess to avoid the headache, stress and frustration, I would drain all of the power steering fluid first.

The best maintenance, is preventative maintenance Jimmy. Keep doing what you're doing. Nothing wrong with keeping your truck in good shape. Those who say something about you replacing old parts, are those you will pass on the side of the road.

Another lesson learned. Should have replaced those lines when you changed the steering box. The return line is low pressure so Elite line NOT needed. Whenever I plan a job, I look at everything else I have to remove to get at it. If there is a consumable item removed, unless it is near new, I change it. Example: Anyone who changes front CV axles and doesn't change the diff seals, will be doing the job again soon kind of problem. When you are working on your own stuff, it's OK too save yourself from that. Pad your own parts bill so that later you won't be charging yourself double labor.

Lines didn't look bad; just the o rings to the gearbox were leaking I replaced the infamous Honda Acura o rings since the old ones are prone to dry rot after so many heat cycles and just age Sucking air/ making noise and will damage the pump if left unchecked

@@ricebike This steering box has a history. It may just be o-rings now, the hose will likely saturate and leak eventually. vs $35-$50 bucks for pressure line that's already loose, only do it once, 1 mess to clean up.

Not much room to work but you got it done. Did my 98 yrs ago. One thing i did learn the hard way,was to never really wrench down hard on those types of fittings with the o-ring. Great looking suburban though.

Okay, my two cents... I'm not understanding the title of your video... Nothing wrong with replacing old with new, but WHY would you plan on spilling nothing? I count on draining it, instead of not wanting to make a mess... Aside from getting rid of possible contaminated fluid, I do away with the stress of it all by simply putting a drain pan underneath and let it drain. At this point in my life, the less stress, the better. Nice truck!

I like the preventative maintenance plan over the parts failure plan. I do the same thing with my 02 Suburban. My recent work was a deep dive in the dash replacing heater core and the dryer with associated valve controls. The heater divert-er valve failed but I wasn't going into the dash without replacing everything, it was a lot of work.

Not really just lift the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel lock to lock left to right a bunch of times before you start the engine and letting the pump do the rest but always use brand new fluid in the system after doing something like jimmy is doing

Good observations, I too do not want to be 'stranded' so-to-speak with PS leaks. I have recently replaced the steering box and pump. Not a 'fun' job on a dual alternator 2500HD Duramax with hydroboost... Anyway, thank you for the video. Good stuff!

I had a split pressure line...coated my entire 1993 Chevy Silverado...belt was coated...engine, coated...so I power washed the engine. I replaced the belt, took off the pressure line, but I also had to pull the pully, replaced the PS pump, had screw back the line into the PS BOX...Stripped the threads...Fuxed around half the summer...replaced the pump, put back the pully, needed a pitman arm puller to get the box out, 35 lbs of bullshit!!! 2 person job. Replaced the box! Brake booster, New front brakes, new steering wheel column, starter, alternator, battery, manifold, fuel filter, puel pump, oil change, tires...ummm? Sheetmetal- new fender this spring- 6x9 KC lights going back on the double chrome rollbar! Then LED fog lights!

I had to replace the power stearing lines on my 90 k2500. Well, I'm no mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. I tinker. I figure out how things work. With that said, i had no idea my truck had like 8 feet of steering line running in the frame to cool the steering fluid lol. I just cut them off and replaced with regular length lines. Ive read to not do that as it could overheat the pump. Been over a year and about 20,000 miles later, the ole girl still turns mint. I now have to replace the pitman and idler arms. Other than that the truck goes mint. Got it as a "if you can get it running, you can have it" deal.

You did good I just had to rebuild my whole power steering system because of a leak that had been ignored. Rack and pinion was leaking before I got it (wasn’t informed) and it lead to the pump going out from running dry, the lines getting too hot (the fluid being pushed through the lines helps move heat), and my steering column U joints went bad because they weren’t designed to steer the car unassisted by the R&P This car has been an absolute pain from having to catching up on repairs old owners neglected and I 100% agree on changing parts before they have a chance to get that bad. Better to change a power steering line that in one piece better than having to fish out its remains after its blown (the rubber hoses were so brittle they broke when I went to pull them out.)

Thanks to your videos i had the confidence to tackle my loose steering om my 06, problem is i tried to skip some of the parts and spent over a month changing systematically everything. One got fixed, showed the next parts worn, and so on. Gear box, pump, tierods, and idler last which was the real problem no figure. Btw i ended doing the gear box 10x pump 3x. Get a redhead from the start, +new napa pump, no duralast/cardone with steering stuff!!!

Those yellow caps are to place in the pump or the gear if you are not putting a line in it right away to keep junk out of it. Also don’t worry about loosing fluid when replacing lines, you really are supposed to flush the pump and gear when you service them like replacing the lines so loosing old fluid is perfectly acceptable and normally you would undo the side of the return line where it just has a hose clamp and direct the flow into a catch pan while adding new fluid with it running and when it comes out perfectly clean new fluid then reattach the hose and hose clamp top off the fluid to the correct level and then use some brake clean or carb cleaner to hose off any mess

Hey I have a sensor where the hose goes into the pump. Did you get rid of the sensor and go straight to the pump? I have a leak there

I replace parts also myself. The only problem I'm learning is that the replacement parts from the local auto parts store really only last for a year or two if you're lucky. Then what? keep doing it over and over until you die?

A video about right and wrong hoses would be good also. I suspect many people use incorrect hoses, especially when desperate and the parts people have nothing in stock etc.. They told me that "fuel hose" would be fine for Power Steering, but I really do have doubts. A genuine PS main hose, at 290mm (11/half inch), is $60-90. Yet the fuel hose is $20 a metre. That alone makes me suspicious.

So at $20 per metre, I could buy 3 metres of fuel hose, for the same price as only 290mm of PS hose. It's a straight piece. Nothing fancy. So I can get 33 times the length, if I use the WRONG hose. As a mechanic I would then get a lot of return business after a year or two or three. Maybe the entire power steering might then need a rebuild ? Maybe I can run a wrecking yard on the side ?

I have the same reasoning for replacing things before they go bad, it used to be that many aftermarket parts were better quality than OEM, but now that most parts are made in China, most are garbage like most everything made in China. I now try to keep using the original parts for as long as possible.

Replaced the power steering pressure line now two times. Replaced the first time as preventative maintenance. OEM line wasn’t leaking. 1st replacement leaked , tried a new oring still leaked. Then replaced again with the same line in this video and it’s leaking again. Leaks from the back of the pump pressure fitting. It’s going to stay that way until the LS swap. Lol

Minor league team at the threads of the hoses is not problematic. In fact you'll probably do more damage by replacing them. There are methods of either coating the threads with loctite or using teflon tape. I prefer to do nothing and simply clean the areas.

Dude, Buy a hose cutting tool. They sell them at HD and Lowes in the plumbing area. Stop it with the razor blades. Good for cutting all kinds of hose straight. ~$50 usd.

Since this wasn't a pressure hose, I think he did pretty good for cutting it close to perpendicular 😊 But, yeah I got a free craftsman/Sears one from a neighbor who had 2
