Layering armor is generally more effective than solid blocks. For more kinetic and shaped charge penetrators, the layers break up the penetrator that a homogenous slab would keep together. For a hesh shell, the layering can break up the shockwave. Layered spaced armor is kind a primitive form of composite if you think about it. The composite is just steel and air though.

It depends. As the td ratio increasingly favor the penetrator, the thinner the plate, the more the plate has a decrease efficiency compare to a monoblock plate. This is assuming plate are tightly packed. The take away is the delta should not be too big, and is simply margin of error in some cases. But the monoblock should almost always perform better. That being said, if we throw in angle and spacing, shit gets out of hand real fast.
@deathdragon2283
@deathdragon2283 Жыл бұрын
Slapping two layers of steel on top of each other is less effective than a single homogeneous steel plate of the same thickness and material. This has been largely understood since the days of ironclad warships. Though this isn’t true for a HEAT warhead. The resulting penetration would be identical against both set ups. You need either an empty space between the plates, or the plates need to be made of different materials optimized to best support each other

@@jakearmstrong2127 It would have to get send back to factory with spare hull armor, remove it, and put a now one. However that is just the armor, there might be other system that's damaged. It is more likely the vehicle will get scraped for parts.

Looks some strange, the area of first plate damage and deformation was big, but in the second plate it was more "dot". "Deformation run through material" always with angle, and area of deformation on the back side should be bigger than at the front side of plate.
@dejmianxyzsimulations4174
@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 Жыл бұрын
There is no material continuity. The second plate does not deform, only the shock wave passing through the material pushed it enough that it broke.

Just wonder why the HESH round flies in a straight line and not in a parabola... i wonder why was so much effort put in that this missile could flatten itself on the armor only to detonate it halfway through this deformation ... And what is wrong with pressure in this simulation that it was not even able to significantly lower the velocity of that bottom cap....
@corrodan2995
@corrodan2995 Жыл бұрын
@@Bialy_1 The force is purely directional, so that cap most likely would not be impacted to a noticeable degree. The detonation is to keep integrity of the casing, there is only so much deformation the shell can withstand and still effectively impart directed energy. If the integrity fails it will not detonate properly. So it deforms partially to the surfaces angle, then detonates.

The 2 you mentioned are very different thing. I don't know about 762, but US probably has test data you can read. Rpg7? Really? It is a 70mm he.

I agree the 7.62 would be very ineffective against the titanium bathtub, but the very correlation of its usage and its Effectiveness in the current conflicts in which it is being used is why I have brought up the subject. Do you have any suggestions on the current munitions that would be used against the A-10 Warthog commonly? I still think it is fascinating subject and still has Merit as a subject for a short video.

@@chadbergeron9135 I don't think there are any a10 being actively deployed ATM. Is US involved in any active combat zone after Afghanistan? Stuff that would be used against a10 ranges from 22lr to pl-21. I do not think a10 would be facing any threat in the near future. It is going away. Unless US decided to invade places with no effective air defense again.
