I’m curious what you guys think? You are the ones that make my channel successful. Let me know your opinion in the comments whether I should start accepting airgun related products to test and review?

I like the honest testing of products that you've tried out yourself on your own terms. That's what brought me to your channel. I'm thinking that if you do decide to accept products to test, there has to be an unwavering line drawn to where you feel comfortable about the situation. If not, things may get complicated and you may lose that comfort. Then you lose the enjoyment of the hobby.

I’ve been thinking and it comes way more naturally to do a show and tell about a gun I bought than just reviewing some random thing that arrived in the mail. I think my lack of comfort and enthusiasm would likely show through and making videos would cease being fun.

I don't see a problem if you're honest and objective, however, if they're sending you products and expecting you to talk them up even if they're sub par that would be a problem. The way you test your own gear, is pretty demanding and thorough. If you treat the "samples" the same. I'd def give it a look.

That’s a good point, I’d get a feel for the company even before testing. If they were pushy and demanding I would just decline. Giving a positive review for subpar product is not something I’d ever do.

You also have a good weekend, and best of luck in whichever choice you make. I believe you will stay true to your heart either way you go. But it's important to enjoy what you are doing. My favorite person to watch for woodworking was because when things weren't fun for him anymore he'd change it up. He also quit doing business deals when they told him how he had to do things, and eventually went back to unsponsored. It wasn't his lack of advertising I enjoyed, it was his enjoyment of what he was doing (plus his calm voice and teaching style). Life is too short to choose to be miserable.

That’s interesting to hear and I can see why he made that choice. I think I’ve pretty much decided to just keep doing things the way I’ve done. It works well, I enjoy making videos on what I want and how I want. That’s sticking with it being a pure hobby and not ruining it by turning it into a job. Viewer comments and insights really helped to provide me with better direction on what I want to do with the channel long term.

The AARonline Airgun channel has a good strategy I think. He gets stuff sent to him and if it’s junk he sends it back with suggestions to fix the issue. He doesn’t post the negative videos but gives the manufacturer a chance to remedy the fault(s). If they don’t get back to him.. they obviously don’t care and don’t get a review. We the viewers then see just the good gear and reviews. Everyone’s a winner and he gets stuff sent to him 👍🏽 I like this a lot especially as he is open about it too 👍🏽 🇬🇧

But then again that strikes me as going against what I initially created this channel for.
@charlesoutdoors2424

I watch channels that do reviews all the time for companies. There's ways of doing the reviews where you can point out pros and cons without totally trashing a product to give people an honest review to keep both the manufacture happy and your viewers. If not most larger channels just will contact the company and tell them it's not working for you and see what they want to do. It's probability not worth doing a mostly negative review. I think doing reviews would be fun. Some companies can be a headache to deal if you can't do a review right away I have heard. OneLeaf for example will start emailing you a few days after you get their product wanting to know where the video is lol. Have heard that from 2 different channels.
@airgunsofalaska
@airgunsofalaska 2 ай бұрын
Very good point about the negative reviews. They work in both directions as well. The guys who liked that product get upset about the negative review and then write insults in the comments. Good idea about working behind the scenes with a company if the product isn’t good and telling them before doing a video. The higher price of the item makes the time spent on that easier than going through the same level of effort for a low priced product. Getting hassled for wanting a video posted would drive me crazy. The company would deserve a quick turnaround but that does change things for the creator. Instead of making videos for fun it enters into job territory and that sounds awful. Lots for me to think about!

Oh yeah we're having a great long weekend here! Lots of goofing around outside and beer😁 I didn't know you have another channel! But to your question I see what you mean how a fun hobby could turn into what feels like a job/business. It's like yeah we all need to get paid but we all need fun time too, it's never good when one pushes out the other. You could dip your toe in see how it goes, back out if it's ruining your fun or 'they' start pulling you in a direction you don't like. You've got the backbone to know when to say no so you'd be safe giving it a try👍 You could also add a disclaimer like 'this gun I got does xyz but that's no guarantee of how the others of this model will be, I only got this one so that's all I know about this line of them' just so everyone understands.

@@yoitired Thanks! I’m just an enthusiast and evidently an air gun collector ha ha! 😆 I really do like the freedom to buy, test and feature what I want and say whatever I want. I think that’s always going to be the best way to reduce bias to a minimum. It was good to receive that email as it caused me to think about what it is I want to do with the channel long term. Seems like the end all goal of everyone is to grow a big as possible and receive free guns from companies. I started watching an Andy’s Airgun’s Review video and thought he did a great job. But I also thought that’s not where I want to end up. Maybe if I was retired and wanted to spend a ton of time making KZfaq videos but I’m not and don’t want to do it at that level. I’m really leaning towards just keep doing what I’m doing. If it isn’t fun then there is no point in doing it. I think seeing where the channel goes organically will be the best route, at least for right now. Besides, I’ve finally got to tame that .30 cal Hatsan and don’t want to be distracted having to make videos on random air gun accessories.

I haven't ordered any airguns from overseas but I would for something interesting enough. That Hatsan is going to need Jedi level skills to shoot straight! I think as long as you’re totally transparent about that it was sent to you for free to test. Be true to yourself in your review. If the stuff they send you is crap tell it as it is. If you are totally honest and give negative reviews they won’t continue to send you product. I watch other KZfaqrs in the auto repair category that are reviewing items that they would never use and give glowing reviews. It’s sad when people sell their soul just to get free stuff.

Reading through the comments I can now see good ways I could go about doing it to maintain transparency but I also see a lot of time and work that doesn’t look enjoyable. It’s caused me to think about what’s my end goal, do I want to grow into some big channel and testing free products is a way to get there. My only issue with affiliates is recommending different products in the comments, would it be stepping on your toes to share good experiences with different brands than the affiliates? I'll put this out there now just in case you go for it. I just bought Vortex crossfire 2 last month (about 700 rounds and no problems so far) they are going for $150 atm on Amazon and have a lifetime unconditional warranty. I wrote them before I bought it and told them it was going on a magnum springer and they said it would be fine. I've been looking for a scope that I can trust for a long time now, I think I finally found it and wanted to share the info with others that may be in the same situation.

I’m not familiar with how the affiliate stuff works and am not excited to even look into it or most likely have to fill out a tax form… pffftt 😖. It takes making videos for fun to a different level and I don’t think I want to deal with that. Is your example where a product gets tested and then in the comments the creator mentions a different product that actually works better? I’d not thought about the creator’s freedom to write what they want being curtailed but it makes perfect sense. No company is going to appreciate that.

OK I'm sure This will be hated, however, since 2020 I've been watching air guns channels, most back then were like your channel...Now I don't watch them anymore, for the simple reason I wasted a lot of money (THOUSANDS) on junk that some did a review on and said it was a good product...I soon realized to late you never see what the product does down the road, the company's take it back and no one knows what really happen to the product... Here is how I look at it, if someone wanted good reviews, one would go through one's inventory and pick out the best, then clean and tune the product. send to be reviewed... the person that reviews it makes a statement like I just pulled this right out of the box and have done nothing to it, he is telling the truth, RIGHT? Well of course he is, now the blame does not fall on him if the product does not work as advertised. I personally don't like watching review channel's anymore because of this... I rather watch someone using the product out in the real world (HUNTING, PESTING COMPEATING,) to get an idea on how something works... Or the very few channels that buy and review their own air guns... most channels that I watch are from over-seas... The simple fact is they have been shooting a lot longer than we have, and with a lot less power... Do what you want I'm sure you will do the right thing... Big C out... 😎

It’s your perspective on products that are being reviewed that I connect with the most! I hate, HATE glossed over infomercials for product reviews because a channel just wants to grow, get views and make as much money as possible. That’s selling out to me but in thinking about this and reading the comments it isn’t as black and white as I first was thinking. Something else that just popped in my head, I do a review on some product I got for free; days, weeks, months even years down the road I’ll still be getting questions and comments about that product. I’m not going to remember how well it worked, is the quality of the product the same now as it was then. I guess a channel would likely rain more subscribers than it’d lose in those instances if the view didn’t like your answers but the smaller sense of community would be gone. Perhaps the best thing I just continue doing what I’m doing and if at some point some company contacts me asking if I’d want to test “X” product and it excites me to do so than I will at that point.
