@Therapy2Day just a note for you. Ren just did a video essay in 8 parts. It's basically an autobiographical explanation of everything he's been through, each part concludes with a track that fits the story. And after the 8th part he released the new song which is an overall telling of that journey ending with a hopeful message for everyone who's going through what he went through. Maybe you should watch that essay before you react to the track recommendation you just got. If you have the time of course. . I think as a mental health worker it's well worth your effort.

@@Therapy2Day Oh yes, Ren is very much a priority. Some say he is a genius. I won't argue with that but I will add something: Ren is a hero. As you may already know, in ancient times, heroes were honoured by becoming demigods in the eyes of the people. A shrine would be constructed and devotees would lie on the ground beside the tomb and sleep. In their dreams the hero would solve whatever issues were troubling them. Sometimes, instead of sleeping, they would enter an altered state of consciousness between waking and dreaming. They called it incubation. Curiously, this practice is preserved in Greek Orthodox monasteries and in the shrines of Sufi saints in Turkey and Iran.

Ren is not just an insanely talented musician and singer, he's a huge advocate for himself and others and the importance of mental and physical health. Truly inspiring is the community that has rallied around Ren and his music. I just started following the fan pages and sites and I've discovered that the fans are some of the most compassionate and empathetic people I've met on the internet. A quote Ren used in a live stream was "a rising tide lifts all ships" and this has become a quote you see on every fan page and site. Ren is inspiring others to lift each other up. As a 3rd year psychology student, I find this a fascinating phenomenon in these highly polarized times. There's something about Ren and his message that is so relatable and people are gravitating to it.

I was directed to this video last night. It perfectly describes and shows my own experiences as well. When I make music the words in some are not mine. When he jolts his head and the distinguishing voice change I experienced over the last ten years. Even though it started at 15/16. I've been diagnosed with bipolar and psychosis for 5 years. Last April I woke up one day and couldn't feel my legs. Eventually causing a progressive paralysis. It's is a autoimmune disease called Guillian Barre syndrome. I've had to relearn how to walk 5 times in the hospital since last April. Recently, I a sense of peace. After being on benzos for three years; experiencing withdrawals every time id go without it. Severely. I heard a voice in my head a few weeks ago saying I no longer needed it. I experienced absolutely no withdrawal symptoms no anxiety or panic attacks since. When Ren talks about surviving the dark essentially I resonated with that. I'm currently finding this interesting sense of peace.

To your point about integrating factions of your psyche; notice how the non-verbal vocalizations at the start are almost pure "right-side" Ren - denying the aggressive "left-side". The end vocalizations (when Ren starts looking straight ahead instead of left or right) contain both compromise and aggression: much richer, more passionate. A subtlety I think many notice but few comment on.

Thank you for this! I am a "Renegade" but not so much that I've delved this deeply and I had no idea about these particular accounts. I was thinking it was just from his Lyme Disease and the meds and disease process since he was like 17 y/o. LMAO!!! You skipped the pig man intro. He does a pig head in every video. This is significant to his personal mythology, so it is also significant here. Man... I guess because you're psych for however long is because you don't cry, but I can't help but cry at this even after so many times of seeing it. I always thought psych would be cool, but I learned it wasn't for me when a patient became deluded from her Rx meds and named me Satan himself and all those she-devils out there would burn in hell with me and I found no humor or dismay in this except for the need to call for restraints and the extra documentation required. Respect for those in the psych field.

I did unintentionally cut that intro out. I hadn't gone through enough of his videos to recognize there was a special significance to it. Although he references both mental AND physical illness, Ren's said that this isn't about either. It's about the human condition generally. It's told through his eyes though, so of course chronic illness and mental illness are going to feature, as does his music, as does religious imagery etc but it's not specifically about any of those thing. It's about the internal struggles that every human being faces. It's also about facing up to the fact that darkness can't be banished from your life, internally or externally. It's part of existence, part of life, part of who we are and helps shape who we are. Though dealing with darkness is never enjoyable, it can lead to good outcomes, both directly and indirectly . Often in unforseen and unexpected ways. Once you accept that darkness is an inescapable part of life and of who we are, that it can't be 'defeated' absolutely and it can't be banished, it's just part of life...life becomes a little bit easier and the darkness becomes a little easier to deal with and to mitigate. It's a simple but unpalatable truth, that many don't want to face up to. Btw, I'm not saying that this is the only meaning. I just wanted to explain what Ren meant when he wrote it. It's one of the joys of art that all interpretations are valid. :) Tbh, I'd assumed the meaning was clear, especially with that closing monologue, until I started reading the comments for the first time. People make a very personal attachment to Ren and his music. I'm the same. However people then project their problems onto the song and assume that the meaning is about that, or something similar. They're not 'wrong'. We all attach our own meanings and that becomes THE meaning, in our heads but we need to remember that, although entirely valid, they are our personal meanings and not a universal or definitive meaning. That's why I think it's always useful, where possible, to hear what the songwriter meant, when writing it, because although not the last word, it's about as definitive as it gets. :)

The following is a post of Ren's journal that he posted before " HI REN" dropped. .. Your Welcome. jAN 01, 2023 rEN~ Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticize or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed. I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head. When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus. These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between. My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished. My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world. The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war. For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person. I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought. Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours. I can't wait for you all to hear it.

@@Therapy2Day Oh, then it's going to be a little bit of a commitment! "Baby Reindeer" is a series on Netflix that has been trending in the number one position since it was released, a few weeks ago. It is the true story (allegedly) of a woman who stalked an up & coming comedian and what happened along the way. It's a deeply psychological story because the comedian was battling a lot of demons and somehow this stalker was filling some need he had, despite him being greatly annoyed by her. But currently the woman accused of stalking him (Finoa Harvey) has come forward! And Piers Morgan in the UK got the scoop by interviewing her on his show. She's really odd and deceptive sounding even as she insists that certain key things didn't happen and she in fact is the victim of HIM stalking her!

Love finding new reactors to Ren, However on your analysis I feel is a little off, He has had very mild mental issues I say from folks breaking up and uprooting his scene of normalcy . But he contracted lyme disease when he was 19 and went misdiagnosed for 7 years and it destroyed his body . Being sick and frail for years confined him to bed and solitude with no answers why he was always so sick.. Then the Psychologist entered his life and they diagnosed him with to many to remember, But basically telling him his mind is making him sick and allergic to everything he consumes. He explored the internet and found his own answers. But the Lyme disease has done so much damage to him with autoimmunity and M.S. which he may never be cured from.. But even with all the doubt he is still going to daily medical treatments and has got to be a difficult time. Such a long fight from someone that just wants LIFE ! Listen to his new one.. TROUBLES.. it will give you a few answers .. Very nice reaction.. Spread Rens message then go into his u tube and listen to his older lyrical videos they all have messages of hope and acceptance ..

I appreciate that he may have begun with mental health not being his main concern, but the psychosis, as well as a longstanding struggle with his physical health, I imagine would take a huge toll on his mental health. You watched what is probably the greatest depiction of the war between the Devil and God that has ever existed and interpreted it as, "mental illness". To be fair, so do most of the other people I've seen who have done reactions to this. I wonder why so many people shy away from the obvious. I do mean, OBVIOUS. Lucifer "You're the sheep, I'm the shepherd, not your place to lead me Not your place to be biting off the hand that feeds me!" "I was created at the dawn of creation I am temptation, I am the snake in Eden I am the reason for treason, beheading all Kings I am sin with no rhyme or reason Sun of the morning, Lucifer, antichrist Father of lies, Mesophiles Truth in a blender, deceitful pretender" "I live in every decision that catalyzes chaos That causes division I live inside death, the beginning of ends" You were listening to the voice of the Devil himself. Wren was foundering under the attacks, becoming angry afraid and desperate and when he was staggered under the worst of the maelstrom, he leaned into God who spoke through him. Ren "I was made to be tested and twisted I was made to be broken and beat I was made by His hand, it's all part of His plan That I stand on my own two feet" God through Ren "And you know me, my will is eternal And you know me, you've met me before Face to with a beast, I will rise from the east And I'll settle on the ocean floor And I go by many names also Some people know me as "hope" Some people know me as the voice that you hear When you loosen the noose on the rope." Now, you might be wondering why Lucifer would take a personal interest in this guy and Wren explains it, after the song. "When I was 17 years old, I shouted out into an empty room Into a blank canvas, that I would defeat the forces of evil" Ren, in ignorance and arrogance, challenged Lucifer fucking Morningstar to a fight and Lucifer obliged him. "And for the next 10 years of my life, I suffered the consequences With autoimmunity, illness, and psychosis." Maybe I'm wrong but compared to the trite and easy 'mental illness' diagnosis... I'm not as wrong as that.

I think art can mean a lot of different things to whoever consumes it, even if it wasn't necessarily intended that way by the artist. I think we can look at what ren wrote about this piece to get some context, which for me seems to point to some mental health aspects, but I see a lot of the religious imagery you point out as well
