I highly recommend his 1 million subscriber speech! There's a lot of information in it, as well as mental health awareness because you're not wrong... physical health can and does go hand in hand with mental health! I lost my little brother to su*cide and Ren has been a beacon of light for my grief process... starting with that speech. This was an incredible breakdown and outside of his 8 part story, that speech lets you know who he is and what he stands for, it really does change the way I hear his music.

Ren fans are super protective, which is funny because Ren is probably one of the strongest people out there. What I get from Ren is just don't quit. No matter how bad, no matter how hard, don't quit. His music was a real comfort to me after my parents died. It was having someone express the pain I didn't know how to speak. Ren's psychosis was triggered by an immune reaction to a fecal transplant treatment. Extreme pain plus the bitterness of yet another failed treatment, sent him spiraling . A course of penicillin that he sought out by himself is what brought him back enough and gave him the clues to finally get the Lyme disease diagnosis after 7 years. He also has MCAS and POTS which the stem cells made worse, but they still saved his life.

It’s so weird seeing a reactor go straight from “Hi Ren” to “Troubles” but…I think they’re really both such important songs. Ren probably saved my life…and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. From a psychiatric stand point, I would say the list of songs to go through would be “Sick Boi” “Chalk Outlines” “Insomnia” “Suicide” “How To Be Me” “Hold On” “Pocket Full of Pain” and “Blind Eyed.” He has a lot of tracks that touch on what he’s been through and his philosophy on life and mental health, but those are all heavily invested in those topics. Thank you for reacting to Ren. I’ve been suffering from Fibromyalgia since 2001. Most of the doctors I saw during those first years didn’t even believe Fibromyalgia was real. Your patient’s description of it was spot on. I used to be so angry that my life was being ripped apart and taken from me, while many looked at me as a lazy malingerer. I’m now in my 50s. I’ve learned to appreciate what I do have and although my life has become pretty small, I love it. I am so thankful that Ren is putting a spotlight on these hidden conditions. I guess it’s just human nature to not understand what you, yourself has not experienced. Anyway, thank you again for spotlighting Ren and his message!

I loved your reaction, advice & most of all the compassion that you exude. I HIGHLY recommend you react to a series of videos that Ren has created, they consists of 8 chapters that range from 10 - 20 minutes each. This is an autobiography written and read by Ren on camera (artistically showcased) that details the full 7 year journey of his struggle. Each chapter includes one of his music video's that compliments the chapter you just finished. As I stated earlier the chapters run 10 - 15 minutes, the last chapter #8 being close to the 20 minute mark and they all have a music video included at the end that enhances the chapter just watched. Even if you don't want to react to these chapters on camera they are an incredible and informative series that you; as a doctor & mental health specialist, will find invaluable in understanding Ren the artist. Thank you for diving into Ren's artistry and I look forward to watching more of your reactions. Cheers

The majority of my practice was spent during active duty with the USAF where I had the opportunity to travel the world, and counsel a wide range of ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The reason #REN speaks so much to me, along with NF, is because I suffer from chronic low back pain and Neuropathy (no, I don't have Diabetes). And my life the last two years has been consumed with the exact struggles REN is addressing in this song. thank you! finally somebody gets it. when you have fibromyalgia the only difference between one day and the next is the level of pain. the levels may differ there most assuredly will be pain. also, i came to exactly the same conclusion regarding its existence or lack thereof. i honestly don't believe it does exist which is really ironic given that it took me roughly a decade of constant struggle to get any doctor at all to provide me with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. i have come to believe that it is a catchall diagnosis for a bunch of conditions that doctors can't identify. and if there's something a doctor abhors more than anything, its a thing that hasn't been put into a box!

Loved your reaction - intelligent & thoughtful. The video was filmed in Calgary, Alberta where he has been receiving medical treatment for the last 18 months. The individual locations have no special personal meaning for him. He and his videographer just drove around looking for places that would look good in the video. However, and I think you are the first reactor who I have heard suggest this, the constant changing of locations in the video may indeed reflect a disjointed view of reality. The vocal sample is from "Trouble so hard" by Vera Hall. Ren has played with the sample using filters and has added his own beat and guitar. I love the track. With great power comes great responsibility, and Ren is truly a hero! He is using his growing powers and platform for so much more than simply creating brilliant music. Ren has said that he always had this feeling that he was meant to change the world for the better. So much that he defiantly yelled a challenge to evil into an empty room. And then he got sick… Ren has now shared the full story of his health journey in 8 video chapters leading up to the release of this song and what a journey it has been. If anyone hasn’t already watched them, I highly recommend you do. With all the chapters he is showing immense strength in sharing his story that is so hard to tell, being vulnerable and telling it because he hopes it will help others and raise awareness. And here he is with another rendition of that story, now told through music with a fire beat and delivering a message of hope. A beautiful hero that the world needs ❤ Oh and Ren is so much more than a rapper. It isn’t even his main skill 😅 Continue down the rabbit hole and get your mind blown 🐰🕳️

@Therapy2Day I'm enjoying your discovery of Ren enormously. You're not the only mental health professional reacting to his videos-- I know of a half-dozen just off the top of my head-- but as far as I can remember, you're the only one to bring in concepts from Jung and Buddhism, both of which I believe are super helpful for analyzing Ren's work. FWIW, Ren has repeatedly said that he's not overtly religious, but has stopped short of saying that he's an atheist. He has also said that he finds religious symbolism-- particularly Christian symbolism, since it's what he knows best-- to be very powerful, which is one reason it shows up so often in his music. Without hearing this from the man himself, I think it would be very natural to conclude that he's a "go to church every Sunday and say your prayers every night" sort of person, which apparently just isn't the case-- though Ren has given no indication that he'd look down on anyone who did believe and live like that. I strongly suggest watching "Sick Boi", either as a reaction or just for your own edification. The two videos, "Hi Ren" and "Sick Boi", are sort of the Rosetta Stone of Ren; they cover most of his background and many of the concepts he returns to over and over again. "Sick Boi" may be less necessary than it was until he released "Troubles" a few days ago, because until then it was the only video that gave a solid grounding in the illness related part of his inspiration-- otherwise, one needed to read some of his prose (usually as the first comment in the KZfaq comment section of his videos) to get that information. He has so many great songs that it seems like a Herculean task to only recommend a few, but coming at it from the therapist angle, I would think "Su!cide", "Seven Sins", and one of his duets with Chinchilla, "How to be Me", are all can't-miss songs, that are deeply enjoyable musically, but also are guaranteed to provide ample material to stimulate therapeutic observations. If you ever decide to stray a bit from the therapy-focus, songs like "Illest of our Time", "Animal Flow", "Losing It, and "Murderer" are fun and intriguing and feature some absolutely sick bars, but they're more Ren having fun and participating in pop culture than confessionals or inspirational.

Ren can say it with conviction in the same way that a former addict can say it to someone in active addiction. How or why someone got there becomes irrelevant ( what’s the benefit of disability) ; it’s climbing out of it that matters. In both cases it’s never linear and it’s often one step forward and two, three , ten steps back until that one step forward is the one step that gets you out of it.

Migraines are the #1 cause of disability. They are not “ headaches”; rather they are neurological disorders and there are at least 5 different types, each with varying characteristics that can vary from person to person. I have had migraines since I was a kid ( I’m 57 ). In recent years they became atypical ( for me), chronic, came in clusters and piggybacked with occipital neuralgia headaches. I didn’t just wake up in pain, pain actually woke me up - like a 2x4 hitting my head. I don’t know what your patient’s situation is but I’d advise finding a neurologist that specializes in headaches ( migraines, cluster headaches, occipital and trigeminal neuralgia etc). Constantly treating migraines with medication ( whether it’s nsaids or triptans) can cause a cycle of rebound headaches that’s almost impossible to get out of. Finding a neurologist that specializes in these conditions is key because there are medications ( specifically CGRP inhibitors) that can stop the underlying mechanisms causing migraines ( halting the activity of the protein that plays a role in vasodilation and inflammation in the brain). Unlike other medications these DO NOT relieve pain, so it makes getting off of the rebound headache “merry go round” possible. Unfortunately these medications are crazy expensive and, as was my case, insurance companies often require you to exhaust less costly ( ineffective or even harmful) options. It took a long time for me to get approved for what was the “ holy grail “ of migraine prevention and relief : Botox. Literally the exact same thing as the cosmetic Botox on in a different box labeled for migraines. Like Ren I was SO hopeful, especially since so many people reported how life changing it was for them. Well, it left me literally unable to lift my head off of a pillow, for months. A lot of stuff happened between then and finding the neurologist I have now - including being sent to the psych ward which led to an MRI which discovered a brain bleed - so getting those first round of injections took a real leap of faith. They were, thankfully, what got me out of the cycle and moving forward.

I use the language of migraines and headaches because that's how my client describes them, and they are already set up with a specialist neuro. I'm just working to support them throughout all this struggle while their doc tries to figure out how to get this under control. It sounds like it could be a nightmare for years and years

Mindfullnes is great, but really, if you listen to Seven Sins by Ren, do you think that it can help him with his pain? In Chapters 1-8 he talk about pain that can't be described in words to the point you can know how bad it was. And he was literall with the shard (Chapters again), but it was one time thing, not selfharming addiction or sth. He cleaned himself afterward to not worry everybody else... It was pain that he could control vs uncontrollable pain from his illness. It is understandable more this way maybe? Go for reaction to Sick boi (song and album). And he is not only a rapper, but multiinstrumentalist, musician through and through, singing voice in Hi Ren, Chalk outlines and How to be me (duets with Chinchilla) is so beautifull! You can react to all of this :)

@@Therapy2Day Also, any advice on seeking inpatient hospitalization for someone with bipolar disorder? @@tjh5716 thanks for asking! I'm not familiar with PA, but at least in Virginia there's often a gap between someone having to be taken to inpatient (for cases of safety and self harm) and someone really struggling but doctors can't make the justification that they need a spot in an inpatient center. Is the person willing to seek that level of help or would it be involuntary? If inpatient isn't an option, are there intensive outpatient providers who might help them through the crisis? There are services where you're seen almost every day but just still staying at home. Please feel free to DM on Instagram if you need some more info. Calling a crisis line for your local public mental health might also get you some answers more specific to what's around you.

Aye, not catching bits of a song, as we all do. In a way it's a good thing, it's leaves room for new discovery in the same song. It's like when he first came across negative comments. People defended him.. sort of attacking his detractors. Ren asked them not to, as he said, if everyone likes your music then your music is likely vanilla pop, so he likes that there are people who don't like it and are honest enough to say so. Also, people who like his music but not all, and say so. It's like what Black Sabbath said, if some people hate you, you must be doing something right. ❤ from Northeast England ❤️
