It's going to take a lot more than 40 watts to weaponize gasses. Modern plasma torches have an effective range of, what, a few inches or so at best? Now, particle beam weapons...

Funny story about the weight issue. When the M16 first replaced the M14 and the BAR during the Vietnam era, some soldiers really hated the light weight because they couldn't think of them as real guns. I felt the same way when I first picked up a Glock on pistol range after years of firing 1911s. "What is this thing?"

Toxic Dogma Actually you're wrong. What he sad was that by the time he needed a rifle there would be plenty laying around for him to pick up and use. Which was proven true later in the movie when he did exactly that.

Imagine dragging that 20 lb hunk of metal around a hill in Korea in -20 temps with a wind-chill of -40 to -70. No thanks. Although it's not like they really worked that well in those extreme temps anyhow. Most BAR guys went and found a Garand as they mostly continued to work. Everyone ditched their carbines early as they stopped working and wouldn't penetrate the thick insulation the Chinese had. The Chinese were using whale oil in their BARs and that kept theirs going. Although I think they just got lucky and that is what they always used in all climates.

@@mystyle_jm8997 scar is much more egronomic - weighs 8 pounds instead of the BAR's twenty! That weight difference is mental. For the same weight, you can carry the scar 17 along with a buncha extra mags, food, or batteries. The BAR's extra 12 pounds really adds up (feels worse) the longer you stay in the field. Every pound matters.

I feel like all the BAR would have been a big deal during WW2 if it had been belt fed with a belt box attached. Would have been a beast to haul, but the increased capability would have been worth it. As it was, I think I'd have rather had a Garand and whole lot of clips. I can't imagine what it must have been like for German infantry, who were using bolt action rifles, when a mess of US soldiers showed up, each with a semi-auto 30-06.

I think the FN scar is such a great innovative design in so many ways, I just wish they would have addressed a few more issues with the manual of arms such as: the bolt catch/release not being ambidextrous (would be nice if they had something similar to the ACR's bolt catch), the short fore-end/handguard (would prefer something longer, possibly in keymod), maybe an adjustable gas system, make it compatible with plentiful magazines(like the dpms AR10 mags), and a non-reciprocating charging handle. If the rifle had those options I may actually consider owning a rifle in the less than affordable 7.62x51mm caliber.

BAR was intended as a squad automatic weapon, not a battle rifle. That's why it has a heavy barrel. The SCAR 17 is a battle rifle, not intended for sustained automatic fire. That's the difference.

Well, it's in some ways apples-to-oranges: the FN Mk17 was designed as a heavy assault rifle, while the BAR is an Infantry Automatic Rifle: a hybrid combat rifle/light machine gun. As a result, it's built to sustain high volumes of Fire for gunnery work, while retaining some semblance of precision. The Mk17, isn't quite built-up for heavy, prolonged stress.

The fact that we can find an 100 year old antique box of 9mm, .45 , 50bmg, 22LR... etc and have it chamber perfectly in a brand new 2014 model gun says that we have done next to nothing in the last 100 years. Not sure if that is good or bad...

TheGreatCrusader this video was about comparing ~100years of improvements. look back another 100 years... that is 100 +100 = 200... there was a LOT of INNOVATION. Smokeless powder, primers, self contained cartridges, automatic fire, proper rifling... actually nevermind... :(
@CrustlessKing

Son of a Zombie Well then you could have said, "Compare the last 100 years of advancement to the 100 years previous to that." There might not have been as much development in the ammunition cartridge field, and the actions of firearms might be relatively the same, but the technology involved in manufacturing, recoil compensation, modularity, ergonomics, etc. has come quite far, and we owe these advancements to having such stable actions and designs from 100 years ago. It wasn't broken, so they didn't have to fix it, allowing the modern designers to focus on other aspects of shooting.

Video games are so unrealistic when it comes to firearms. I'd like to know why they think two different rifles with the same barrel length and the same caliber do different amounts of damage. Also, just calling something a "sniper" rifle makes it 5 times deadlier. Don't get me wrong, I like video games and it's good that they're getting more people interested in firearms. A new gun owner and a supporter of gun rights is always good, irrespective of how they came to be firearms fans.

I love my SCAR 17s. Best battle rifle I have ever handled, and I have handled a lot! The BAR was a great weapon in its time, and it is a pretty good war club if you run out of ammo and are strong enough to swing it... LOL If you hate the SCAR, its probably because you have never fired a SCAR... They are light, accurate, have an OK trigger, good sights and surprisingly low recoil for a 7.62 NATO round. I can fire my SCAR at a 6" plate at 300+ yards at a rate of 3 to 4 rounds a second and hit the plate every time. Almost no muzzle rise. The muzzle break makes the weapon loud, you can feel the thump if you are standing next to someone firing it. Yes, it kind of looks like a pregnant guppy, but if the SHTF, that is the rifle I will have in my hands. You can really reach out and touch someone, in the next zip code if necessary, with the SCAR. I just don't know what else you could want in a combat rifle...

The book helmet for a pillow by Robert Lackie - an amazing book about the marines in the pacific. Describes how the marines modified the BAR for combat "if it could be taken off it was". Packs were used for shooting or logs in more static times. It was more DMR then people think because of the sights and trigger the book talks about being able to burst 2 or 3 rounds with it accurate.

Listen to the sound both guns make when you drop them on the table. The BAR sounds like quality, steel, the thud of awesome workmanship. The SCAR sounds like any other water gun you would toss down. Plastic. I'm old school, I'll admit it, I like a steel gun that just feels good when you pick it up. But, I to have taken advantage of the "plastic" firearms, the weight factor, the reliability, just like everybody else. But, I'll have to say, picking up an old S&W .357 Magnum revolver feels like coming home.
