HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Actually I can, as an EMT me and my partner have saved numerous lives, but we refuse to count our wins, when we tell stories, we do so in a manner which highlights our teamwork, not what we each did individually, and we would both lay down our lives to protect the other, no questions asked. If ever one of us is killed, whether in the line of duty or not the other has vowed to ensure their family is provided for. That is true friendship, the type which can only be formed by placing your life into someone’s hands and asking them to place their life in your hands.

It's not entirely accurate, I don't believe that either Hillary or Norgay initially revealed who was first to reach the summit but in Norgay's 1955 autobiography "Man of Everest" he revealed that they were roped together a few feet apart with Hillary in the lead when they reached the summit; but for all practical purposes they summited at the same time.

I'm a Kiwi, and 20 years ago I attended our large company's annual marketing conference in Auckland with 3-400 other mostly young employees. The director surprised us by bringing Sir Ed out on stage in wheelchair to address us. The entire theatre gave him a 5 minute standing ovation, with a lot of people including myself in tears. He then spoke for 2-3 minutes in a very gravelly voice (he looked and sounded very old) before he got another 5 minute standing ovation. The awe and respect all Kiwis still have for the man is visceral, and none of us know - or care - who reached the summit first.

Maybe your reality of that occurrence is true if you saw several other deleted scenes that weren't in the movie. What actually happened in the film was they both put their names on reports after Glen circled the earth. No conversation took place. This occurred at the very end of the film and she types her new last name because she's married now. Jim's character brings her a cup of coffee as she continues to type up the next report.

It was cut because the director assumed you could figure that out by yourself. Don't treat the audience like an idiot. I like this scene and love this movie, but I understand why it was cut, because it was redundant with another scene that stayed in the film. It was a choice between this scene or the scene where the lead engineer is reminded that his job is to help/find the few real geniuses out of that room filled with geniuses. Either scene would have worked. Both kept in would have been a bit heavy-handed. The one that was kept emphasized that his real job was to be a leader who helped those under him. This one emphasizes simply sharing the credit.
@cheyennesouza7960
@cheyennesouza7960 2 жыл бұрын
I know you posted this a while ago. But I dont think this scene is about sharing credit. It is Costners character sharing that he is learning what he needs to do in order to complete his mission. He is not trying to teach Parsons character to do the same, but informing him that he accepts what he learned from the story and is going to apply it. I like the scene, but I think it was kept out to keep what Costners character was thinking a mystery more so than anything.

I agree, why was it cut..! I'm not sure this figured in the film but I think you are missing the point here. It's not about Harrison & Stafford, I believe Harrison (Kevin Costner) was trying to impress upon Stafford (Jim Parsons) that he should get over his prejudice of women and blacks and work together with Katherine (Taraji Henson) to solve the problems and both have a bit of glory.

I can understand why this part was deleted after watching the movie. If the director have had this talk with him, it would have taken the suspense viewers wanting to know if he eventually became cool with Katherine's presence. It wouldn't be wise of him to have heard such wise words still acting unfriendly towards her. The way the director shoot the scenes towards the end, where he handled her the mug after typing the report at night with everyone gone was really subtle and awesome implying they later got along working with each other (including overtime) as time went on.

The main character earns her place without anyone having to go into bat for her behind the scenes. This scene is a little too schmaltzy and could be considered patronising as well. The clip where he hands her the chalk in the meeting is all we need plus the respect shown by the John Glenn character. The lead engineer character hopefully comes to his own realisation.

I have seen this movie over a dozen times. I really liked it but there is always room for improvement. LT. COL. Johnson's uniform was all wrong, Shepherd's and Glenn's dialogue should have been accurate. And the Chevys lined up looks staged. There were other things but all and all I liked it.

Hey, I’m doing an assignment and I can’t find some clips... can someone please help me with the answers to: •why couldn’t Katherine take credit for her work AND •What does Katherine suggest to do to prevent the rocket from burning in reentry TYSM 💕 💕 💕 💕
@granadosvm
@granadosvm 4 жыл бұрын
First answer: Because she was a computer. Computers were considered assistants who did routine math. It was let to women because it was considered a secretarial job, the authors of the reports were the project leaders who created the theory to work, not who resolved the math. Second answer: Nothing. It was Mary Jackson who suggested adding fasteners to the heat shields over areas closer to the source of internal heat to decrease the risk of fasteners loosening before re-entry.

@@ConstantChaos1 I think the biggest liberty is that the story of the three women is made simultaneous. Their actual stories happened several years apart, a a matter of fact, NASA was not segregated by the year the movie takes place. As narrative goes, it would have been difficult making a single movie of these amazing characters working on different areas in different years, but by making them look even as close friends, the story is more engaging. The second biggest liberty (in my geek opinion) is that you don't see a single slide ruler before the IBM computers are installed.

So trifling how most of the WP in the comments are focused on the W dudes and Everest when the point of the scene was to discreetly teach an ethical point. That point being: Little racist/sexist guy who's always doubting, blocking and nasty to Kathrine needs to put his ego, racism, hatred and jealousy aside and find/embrace the common ground/goal with her for the sake of the mission. That everyone there, including the genius Black woman all have a role to play in get US astronauts to the moon and back.
