Cannot express how much I appreciate this video! I’m a complete beginner and every tip has been stellar. I’ve been dreaming of black and white suede curtains, and I’m so much closer to that dream being a reality, so thank you!! 🥹 After watching this several times (and after several prototypes), I’ve gotten to a nice near-end product. I’m struggling with one thing though… when I go to see what the curtain looks like on the hooks, the face fabric seems to pull away from the lining and it ends up sagging down, and I’m not sure what step I’m missing. I’m hoping for a pure hidden stitch, but I may just need to sew a line to bind the face fabric and tape together… any thoughts to what I may be overlooking? Thank you in advance 🥺

Are you adding buckram? If so, is it fusible on both sides? When you hang the curtains are you intruding the Wave effect or just hanging it flat? The permanent Wave status gives the heading structure so it needs to be tested like that. Are you also using a track/pole with Wave system gliders?

Rather than count the pockets between each hook, you could use a ruler which would make it much quicker 😊
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 5 ай бұрын
Well..... not necessarily. The position of the hooks is determined by the number of Wave gliders in the track/ pole versus the number of pockets in the tape. The spacing of the pockets in different brands of tapes can vary and the number of pockets may need to vary across the width if, say, you're maximising fabric and you can't achieve the exact same number of pockets in each space. By the time you've calculated all that and converted it into measurements on a ruler you could have done it by counting. Plus, it pays to understand how the spacing of the pockets works and varied so that the heading can be manipulated. I go into much greater detail about this in the Wave Technical video on the Trade Pro Tier of my Patreon channel.

This tutorial is wonderful, so much detail, love it! Thank you Justine. I’m about to embark on sewing sheer wave curtains for many windows in my house, so I have a few questions regarding sheer fabric curtains, as I have never sewed curtains or used sheer fabric. 1. Does a hidden stitch wave header work best for sheer fabric curtains with no lining? 2. Do you still need to add a stiffener tape (or wide fusing tape) at the top, similar to how you used the buckram for a clean crisp header finish? 3. What style hem would you suggest be stitched down the sides, the fabric already has a manufactured weighted hem, at the bottom, I was thinking French hem? Would love a tutorial on any type of sheer curtain. Thankyou for sharing your wisdom around the world. (An Aussie, who loves watching your videos.)
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom Ай бұрын
Hi there down under 👋 and thank you for your lovely comments. Hidden stitch Wave works very well on sheer fabrics with no lining and the method is pretty much the same. Just make sure you allow enough fabric at the top to wrap around the buckram twice so that it runs down the back and back up the front inside.
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom Ай бұрын
You could try it without any buckram in the top if the sheer is very light but tbh, it's better with some sort of stiffener. If you don't have access to buckram a heavy weight Vilene works well.
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom Ай бұрын
I find a simple 1" (2.5cm) double turned hem for the edges is ideal for sheers. Not sure why you would do a French hem unless you were adding a trim to the edges..... or the meaning of a French hem is different for you. Hope this helps 😊👍

Excellent very well explained. Do you think it would be possible to cut the eyelets off some ready-made eyelet curtains and convert them for use with a wave curtain rail. The curtains need shortening anyway and my daughter has just moved into a place with wave curtain rails fitted.

Hi Wendy, sorry for the delay responding.... I'm currently moving house so am playing catch up with messages. Yes, I've converted quite a few eyelet curtains into Wave curtains. You may have to adjust the curtain width a little depending on the system you are using but otherwise its a pretty simple process.

Hi there and apologies for the delay replying. No, there's no need to add extra lining that is already blackout lined unless you want a ticket more plump feel to the curtains.

thank you for being so detailed in your video, i have recently moved and wanted to make my own curtains due to the prohibitive price of quality curtains in the UK, I am a simple/ basic machine user and needed instructions on wavefold, you have been so thorough, that i had to write and say thankyou. You have made a relatively difficult project, so much easier....just one thing,i would like to know what kind of thread you used for the hand-sewing part? is it just normal thread you would use in a machine (but doubled up) or a thicker kind? and is there a particular weight of buckram i ned to purchase? many thanks for your advice.
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 9 ай бұрын
Oh that's so nice, thank you for your lovely comments. I tend to use the same thread for my hand sewing as I do on the machine but, yes, it's double to make it stronger. There are specific threads for hand sewing curtains but I find them too thick so tend not to bother. The buckram I use is a standard fusible buckram but most that are available are only single sided. If that's all you can get then you can make it work. It's just a bit more fiddly so I would recommend you hunt around for double sided fusible. Jx
@a.m248
@a.m248 9 ай бұрын
@WindmillCurtainRoom thanks so much for your reply....I have managed to procure a double sided fusible buckram with relative ease, but having trouble with the thread, can you provide a link as to where you got yours? I know it is a large reel, but I'd be using it on loads other projects 😉 is it a polyester or nylon thread? it looks like something i saw on amazon, but they have two thicknesses, 0.12 and 0.15mm....please advise, (i dont have an industrial machine)

Great tutorial - many thanks. Is it actually possible (or necessary) to make unlined voile waves without stitch lines?
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes Jacqui, for sure. I've done lots of voile waves using the same method. Generally there's no need for the buckram, otherwise it's the same method, just vary the hand sewing to catch just a tiny bit of the voile. Some really fine slithery voiles that show even the tiniest of stitches may be better made using the wide bonding tape but most voiles work just fine. Here's one I posted on my Instagram a while ago instagram.com/p/BbcuFNaDB5z/?

Hi Lesley, glad you found the video useful. I would highly recommend finding a local curtain making shop to recommend a Wave track/pole to you as they'll have access to many more products than the few DIY products that are available. They should be happy to supply just the track without the curtains so have a ring round. Alternatively you can find similar products on line but be careful to orderthe correct product as many aree made to measure so if you get it wrong you'll be stuck with it.

@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
Sorry I've only just replied Darlene, I've only just seen your comment. It's harder to achieve with non fusible buckram but possible. You need to make sure it's very well secured inside so it would need lots of hand tacking at the top and bottom edges of the buckram inside the heading.

@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there 👋 I'm so glad you like the videos. Yes, I'm familiar with the snap tape system and this hidden stitch method of making would work well with it. The difference is that the tape is usually much narrower but I would still make the buckram and fabric layers the same 3" depth to give the top some structure, just take care to get a really neat edge as that will be seen without it being covered with the tape. The tape can be machined along the top edge just the same then hand stitched down along the bottom edge.

Can you tell me what make iron you use, all the cordless irons I use do not stay hot enough for long. Thank you
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
It's a Philips Easyspeed, but I'm not sure they're still available. Cordless irons aren't a popular choice in the curtain making business for the same reasons you cite. Personally, though, I really don't like a hot iron as I find too much heat can leave impressions on the face side of seams etc. Having said that I do also keep a wired iron for occasional times I need to iron, say, a roll of fabric that's creased. The Easyspeed is the best cordless iron I've found (I've had 2 in a row) and it obviously does cool down quicker than a wired iron but I've really got used to it and can get plenty heat for what I need.

I have learnt so much regarding curtain work,but how do you calculate the amount of fabric needed for wave curtains.Do you use the same method required for any fabric quantity do multiply by 2 5 the divide the amount by you fabric width ???
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 2 жыл бұрын
Well if you follow the manufacturers recommendations they'll tell you to use strictly a multiplier of around 2.1 (depending on which manufacturer it is) and there's sense in that as you are creating waves from a flat piece of fabric and those Waves need space to fold back and forth. The fullness therefore needs to be limited but you can add more or less fullness depending on your fabric. I find it sacrilege to cut off a quarter width just to stick to the 2.1 x fullness rule for instance and sometimes it can ruin a large repeating or bordered pattern. Just don't go mad, maybe up to 2.8 x fullness is about the max I'd say.

how do you guarantee the seam does not land in the face fold
@WindmillCurtainRoom
@WindmillCurtainRoom 5 ай бұрын
Sometimes it does but if you've done a good enough job at joining and the fabric is amenable then it's not that obvious. If it isn't that amenable then you need to calculate where the spaces are going to fall and cut your widths down accordingly. When it's an obvious pattern and there are lots of widths then you just have to juggle the seam locations as best you can.

Yes, you can use pin hooks but it's hard to get them through the buckram without getting an impression of them on the front and also, they're a bit harder to relocate if you need to adjust. The tape regulates the spacing, like you say, but is also generally much easier to use with std hooks.
