Ultimate Barn Cat Catio building custom diy homestead farm cat working outdoors mousers.

My dad has offered to help me build a catio for my cats so I thought I would look up videos on how to do it. I am almost crying at the amount of love and attention to detail you have put into this catio. You are a wonderful human. I hope the cats are all doing well and have continued to enjoy the space.

But of advice. Don't use chicken wire just because it's cheap. Use the more expensive hardware cloth that predators can't just reach through. Don't forget that predators can also dig up under things too. So if it's on the ground you might put a layer between the ground & the cats. If I were you I'd consider starting with a smaller catio to test the waters. It can take cats a bit to actually use things. I recommend drugs I mean catnip spray to encourage them. But when you plan out the smaller catio I'd plan for it to be easily expanded in size by adding more to it. But take anything I say with a grain of salt & research. Because I've watched various videos of different animal containment shelters. But I've never gotten around to trying to build one on my apartment porch yet. Downstairs apartment porch. Although I could put a taller one outside my bedroom window. I don't think management would like it. Also I'm lazy. I do ideas more than follow through. Still come up with some doozies though. Occasionally. Fly free my little idea birdies. Fly free & annoy people. Good luck & enjoy building with your dad.

It a started with Stormy Barn Cat (rip) She was responsible for turning me into a cat guy. They do great work on the farm with the rodents too. Love these cats, I’d do anything for them.

Only thing missing was a "floor." They'll use the dirt floor for a cat box, even though you have one for them. Some cats don't like to use a litter box once it has been used!

This is a great cateo but it would be improved if you put in a few solid wood small houses, about the same size as the feeding and pooping station. The reason behind this is that during cold weather it's nice for the cats to go somewhere where they're not too exposed to the wind and cold and they can just have a little shelter. Cats also like to be warm so if you put some folded blankets inside those small houses they'd appreciate it. I understand they're farm cats but they're still cats. As for Dexter, if anyone finds a way out of that cateo he will, he's a real escape artist

Wonderful! I have a small one and I get my cats in at night also. I live in a place that has lots of cats and we TNR them to make sure we stop having more kittens coming into this world. Way too many are being born. If you haven't watched 'The Asher House' videos you could see what's possible with the farm that you have. We need more people like you to help our animals out there. Too much suffering. Your cats look so happy. Thank you for caring.

You have done an incredible job. You really did your homework. I would clap real loud when I called our feral cat. She lives indoors now. Catios are great for cats. We have coyotes so they need to he attached to another room in the house to be able to go inside in case of a storm or danger. Enclosed Cat runs high along the fence are an extra with protection at the top so they can't get out. They are best for people who have a fenced yard. Adding some foliage trees and boxes inside the catio are nice too. Cats love to hide. Rollers on top of the fence keep the raccoons and coyotes from jumping inside the yard. I know the coyotes will try to dig too..

My friend told me non-chalantly “oh a bobcat probably got him. I cried and cried. Thanks for the catio for your kitties

The name catio has been around for a while, it’s a good name. I love your version of a catio. The one thing I would do is add some of the screening where your tree goes through the roof. Dexter and the crew all seem to love it. Good job!

I was going to add screening but decided to use expansion foam so the tree can grow a bit, but eventually I'll have to make the hold bigger as the tree grows. Thanks for the comment.

Yes thanks so much. I think the cats are getting trained too cause it's a bit easier to get them in now. Sometimes even in the day when they are out hunting they go back in there by themselves to have a nap lol.

Wonderful. 50 years ago I had a book about a Japanese guy who made a very large enclosed cat space. He used a lot of various size tyres to make lying places, & the cats seemed to love them. It would be interesting to see what you can do with tyres.

That is an awesome and spacious catio for your barn cats! I’m glad they will be more safe now. I love all your cats! I have 3 indoor cats and my brother just made a small catio for them 2 days ago. It has roller wheels. They are loving the experience being outside during the summer months.

That's spectacular. Suggestion... If there's away to protect the cats from the edges of that tin, even around the tree cut out. Years ago my X husband's cat cut his thigh open clear to the bone climbing up on a tin roof . However, you built them a terrific enclosure. Also, you can clearly see how much you care for you pets. We grew up in farm lands and on acreage and my cat would go sometimes for a couple weeks on adventures then he'd return. We had a nice big greenhouse attached to the house my parents built that they enjoyed a lot.

I agree, Mj6962. If you live int he wilds or outdoor rural communities or on a farm, the normal dogs and cats CAN'T SURVIVE or compete with big predators or wolves or Bobcats, etc. The dog should not be in an outside "doghouse" at night. the cats love going outside, sometimes at night, but that activity is safer in a suburbs, not in a rural, wild farm community or near the big outdoors.
