Welcome to Exercise For Health
This video explains what blood pressure is, but more importantly what considerations you should take when you exercise. The advice given is not intended to replace that of a qualified health professional, but to provide tips on what you should consider as part of a regular exercise programme.
DO NOT exercise if your resting blood pressure is greater than 180 / 100 mmHg. If you are unsure, seek advice from your GP/ doctor.

I've started exercising again to get my BP down and I was doing literally everything wrong,for example I done a one minute plank and thought my head was going to explode and ended up with bloodshot eyes like you wouldn't believe.Loads of great advice in this video which is common sense when it's explained so well,thank you so much.

Glad I found this. I developed severe pots a few years ago. Since then can't stand without my BP slowly rising and rising while sat up and I'd like to start being more active again to rebuild my vascular stamina. I've noticed some movements I can't do because my BP rises too high as you mentioned planks and stuff. This video helped me figure out the mechanics and the risks alongside certain movements. I'll be mentally referring back to this video for a while. Hopefully I'll recover faster from now on. Thank you for this :)! The lifting above the head and the lateral raises were really helpful I was wondering abt that. Also focusing on multiple muscles and focus on moving blood pump to different regions. Wow! Never thought about that but honestly cant wait to try it and see if it helps this next week. Thank you!

Just checking in again. I thought I was in good shape for 80, but these exercises get me just as winded as my HIIT workout. To be honest, some of the fast versions I can't keep up with and have to do the slower versions. Much of it is also my balance not being what it used to be. Anyway I'm also going through your other videos since I also have coronary artery disease. I'm keeping a heart healthy diet, but I find not many doctors agree with it. I try to engage them in a discussion but they don't want to take the time...they just want me to do what they tell me, and to not ask any questions. Thanks again.

@Exercise For Health - I just stumbled upon this video from KZfaq recommendations, and I can’t thank enough. This is a brilliant video. I’m 35 years old, and since 4 years on a hypertension medication. My BP is lingering in the 125/ 88-90 zone with a low dose medicine. I am very keen on muscle building, and enjoyed strength training. However, my doctor had advised me to stay away from the gym. Could you please suggest or make a video demonstrating a routine for strength training exercises which is safe and also helps in toning the body. I’d really appreciate your advice.

Great! I'm slightly limited with what I can show on this channel as I have no gym with weights equipment of my own. I have managed to use a public gym with their permission on the odd occasion for 5 minutes when it's about to close. I'm hoping that I can offer something like this in the future as I have more of a strength training background than a cardio/ endurance based one. I have done some bodyweight strength exercise routines such as the TRX workout here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLBhlcikra-dcac.html which should be OK for you. Watch this space!!

Glad it was helpful. Yes B/P fluctuates all the time, and you can get different readings within the space of 5 minutes, but look for what is average over a period of time to get an idea of whether it is Stage 1 or not.

@@ExerciseForHealth Right on, that makes sense. Although generally speaking, knowing my other factors such as my cholesterol, diet, recovering from smoking and alcohol overconsumption (2+ years ago) and elevated stress from past traumas, I definitely fall more on the stage 1 side of things even when given time to rest, although I can achieve a squeaky clean 120/80 result at times. Good to know the numbers to be weary at and as well as how to handle exercises accordingly. Thank you once again!

I really just thought i was too week to do a plank. Wow. This video has helped me understand my body so much more. THANK YOU! I am sad though because i love an over head press and ball slams. 😢

Glad it helped. Just remember that the overhead press is of a higher risk, but this doesn't mean you MUST NOT do it. It's worth taking a look at some other videos I've done on hypertension in the playlist here with some more recent information: kzfaq.info/sun/PLf9i8qFtMBBI9YPPSqbqzFOOYa45N_pPc

Brilliant video. I learnt that I am doing all the wrong exercises given my high BP. But rather then giving me an excuse to give up on exercises you gave me an alternative more beneficial one. BTW I'm surprised that exercises only reduces the pressure by 5 to 10 Mercury. I had hoped it would have been much more

I followed you yesterday morning to work on my BP but after the exercise I felt heart congestion and also felt like falling, could it be that I over did it or I did it incorrectly. Please advise me I don't want to base on high blood pressure drugs. Thanks

I believe all workout plans should be individualised as there are so many variations with one's health/ fitness/ ability etc. I obviously do this where I work in the UK for people that have been referred to me that I can assess face to face. However, I hope that the videos offer some general guidance for people, to help them manage their condition.

Just discovered your chanel it is really lnformative and easy to understand, i am 72 male and have high blood pressure i walk for one hour before breakfast every day but my pressure stays high even after rest, my problem is i cannot take my pressure even at home as it stresses me and forces it higher have to take strong meds but the after affects are not good, any tips? great video, Thanks. Peter Guardamar Spain.

Sounds like you have white coat syndrome which is very common where anxiety of having B/P taken actually increases it. It might be good to try taking it 3 times a day: when you get up, in the middle of the day, and when you go to bed, and record the readings every day for a couple of weeks, so you can see any fluctuations. Your B/P will go up a bit during and shortly after exercise, but it will begin to drop again, so maybe try it about 2 hours after your morning walk and see what you get. Great that you're staying active though and great to hear from someone in Spain!

Thank you for the tips on avoiding the Valsalva through exhaling. I've been diagnosed with a tiny pseudo-aneurysm in a vertebral artery and have been advised to avoid the gym because of the risks that come with valsalva (the aneurysm might burst). I'll take up your tip on reducing blood pressure through exhalation with my doctors and see if they can greenlight going to the gym.

Thank you for this guidance. It's very helpfuL advice. Could you introduce some other compound exercises in addition to the upright row you demonstrate in this video. Thank you.
@ExerciseForHealth
@ExerciseForHealth 3 жыл бұрын
Glad it's been helpful! Yes, there are so many compound exercises one can do, especially if you have access to equipment like a gym or even at home like a TRX suspension trainer. Examples include seated chest press machine, seated row machine, twin cable press standing (various angles), cable row standing (various angles), TRX press/ row, cable face pull and narrow hands press up (hands under shoulders, elbows tucked in). All these will hit various heads of the deltoid so you can still work the shoulders without pressing above the head. In the future, I would like to film some footage in a gym environment providing I can get access (post lockdown) and permission, which will be a great follow up to this video.

I really appreciate this video. I’m 28, got high blood pressure after having my baby 3 years ago. I’m on one medication daily and have an average of 120/80 on medication. I have been trying out my local yoga studio and they do hot yoga. Is doing this a bad idea? I tried it once and didn’t have an issue but I don’t want to do more harm to my body than good.
@ExerciseForHealth

It should be OK. The heat/ humidity in the room may cause your B/P to drop, so if you're going from a very warm and humid environment to a cold one, this can spike the B/P but only in the short term (a bit like dipping into a cold plunge pool or ice bath). Just make sure you stay warm when you leave the class to allow your body temperature to come down gradually so the blood pressure gradually stabilises.
