I swear we used to actually restore cars. But a surprising amount of my time at Rocket Restorations lately has been spent reviving Tom's quality acquisitions. Case in point, this 1968 Imperial Crown Coupe. It's big, it's beautiful, it's extremely green... It's the 4500 Pound Pickle. It's got a 440 that appears to be very fresh, and the gas in the tank smells like it was refined in the last decade, so the chances for internal combustion, tire smoke and tomfoolery are high. You'd better grab yourself a gas station corndog and strap in, because we're about to throughly test this classic land yacht. ‪@rocketresto‬

I've always, always wanted one of these. I tend to gravitate toward big Mopars, and think I had too much exposure to the TV show "The Green Hornet," and Dean Jeffries' customized 1966 Imperial, "Black Beauty," when I was a kid. Anyway... I found a listing for a '68 Imperial Crown four door. The man who originally owned it died. It had sat in his garage for around 15 years because he had become unable to drive it, and the family was selling it. The man's son told me all about the car and emailed photos. It was a time capsule! beautiful dark green metallic paint. beautiful interior. The right front fender was replaced because of a minor accident that happened well over 20 years ago but, other than that, no damage or rust or... anything. It was loaded with options (power vent windows, cruise control, the auto-temp control, power seats and powered everything else, etc.). Oh, did I mention it had under 70,000 miles on it, too? The man's son told me he would sell it for... get this... $4,500.00! I told him that I was off to the bank and I'd meet him at his dad's garage, but he said that wasn't possible and he wanted to meet after he finished work the following day, to which I agreed. Next day, late in the afternoon, the guy calls, apologizes, and tells me that his family had an estate sale and sold the Imperial that day before he got home without talking with him about it. I felt like I'd just been gut-punched and I was heart broken in a way that only others who share my affliction (haha) will understand. Oh well... there's always the one that got away, right?

The toggle switches for the headlights and wipers look like the same switches on my '68 Fury VIP. My VIP also has a reclining passenger bucket seat. You can get Auto Temp in a Fury that year, but I wouldn't recommend it. It was also the first year, the cruise control was on the turn signal stalk. That desk you wanted is part of an Imperial option called Mobile Director and the front passenger seat also swivels. Pretty neat.

Nice. Yes I’ve heard about the Mobile Director option from a few people now. For something that was only installed in about 81 cars, a lot of people seem to know about it 😅 it’s very neat. If you saw the cruise switch (“Auto Pilot”) in the blue car, it’s on the dash in these.

Several guys showed up and were angry with me for ruining the Imperial. I said I didn't think it was worth much because it was a 4 door. I did not know there was a mopar cult. I traded it for road runner disk brakes for the 880.

Imperial's were actually ahead of Cadillac and even cost more than a Rolls Royce(more so the 66 and older). I believe by 67 they started to be more like a New Yorker but nonetheless..Cadillac has Imperial in it :) Hell,every car copies each other even today!! You could also get a version of that Imperial with a table at the back,like you wanted! Mobile Director option it was called.. They even had a button on the floor so you can switch the radio stations with your foot,like the high beams, Truly Awesome! I owned a few of these all ran great and were quick cars for being heavy..One 1968 Imperial was a 2 door it had factory 440(obviously) with factory duel exhaust and a factory duel snorkel air cleaner and sure grip..You know the woulda,shoulda,coulda type deal.Don't worry I have several nice old Mopar cars,don't lose sleep over me being sad I sold the 68 years ago that's what I do,buy/sell and keep some,I am fine! Oh well,my comment of the week..Take it as you want.. P.S , Love the Channel..

I had a 68 2 door 300 fastback with more MOPAR addons than even the fanciest Imperial ever made. My 300 even had addons from the ultra Rare Crown Royale [a diplomatic purposes only] little known Chrysler product. And a one-off pair of prototype heads originally designed for Mario Andretti for NASCAR. I lost it [I presume] where one of my cousins was last storing it, and I have no idea what may have become of it. It came with all the actual documentation.

I traded a '72 Chevy for a '67 Crown Coupe. I really liked that car, but it needed a lot of parts that even back then were hard to find---little electric doodads, heat and A/C parts, etc. I ended up trading it for an '83 Impala from a fella that was into old Mopars. He died not too long after, so I don't know what ended up happening with the CC. To this day I still think it's one of the nicest styled cars of its era, even nicer than the Caddies and Lincolns. Mine was a creamy white.

I had one of these. Everything on it is heavy. The entire grill is diecast. The gas cap is 6 pounds. good luck removing the front bumper; all the bolt sare hidden. The hupcaps are 3 or 4 separate pieces with a heavy diecast ring. Look at the size of the quarterpanels. Giant 4 piston Budd calipers. 5 on 5" bolt pattern no other MOPAR car wheels fit. It is entirely unique aside from drivetrain. Why do I think that mine had a Holley on it? Nice feature, brings back memories, Thanks

There is an anecdote among car designers & stylists that goes something like when the AMC Hornet debuted at a car show (the location varies by story) that designers from GM, Ford & Chrysler gathered around the car to see how NARROW AMC had managed to get their new front doors. The Hornets doors were literally HALF the width of a standard mid-size door .... narrower than even GM and Ford designers could come up with for their upcoming Vega and Pinto projects. The anecdote goes on to say how upper management at GM was furious with their designers because they had told management that doors couldn't get any narrower. "It just wasn't possible" they were told. But then here comes little AMC with a compact car with narrow doors that allows their compact interior to have the hip room of a Chevelle, Torino or Satellite. I miss my '68 New Yorker. If I had only known how rare those cars were in them pre-internet days.... I might not have ever parted with it. Of course, after I did part ways with it; the Javelin I had traded for it promptly folded in half (from rust) and little did I know the 440 in the New Yorker was in the process of spinning a main bearing. We knew it had low oil pressure; but it always put out the warning light. The 440 went on to power a '68 Charger R/T.... and the rest of the car sat and eventually (probably) went to a demo derby. I lost track and the guy who sold it refuses to tell me to whom he sold it so I can only imagine the worst. Funny thing about the 440 though was apparently on the pan rail ID stamping.... the engine may have originally been slated to be a Magnum or TNT motor. The P for premium fuel had two X's stamped through it and then an "S" stamped sort of kitty-cornered to the rest of the rail numbers. But, the car had a Holley carb, standard manifolds, single exhaust and we can only assume it had the low-performance cam. My friend who built the engine didn't notice anything different about the pistons or rods. Just another one of those funny Chrysler anomalies. Not everything there is Imperial-specific. My New Yorker had the same dash switch gear, practically the same gauge cluster (sans oil pressure and temperature gauge). I'd assume a lot of that stuff is shared with full-size Chryslers because by the next year, Imperial would become a sub-series under the Chrysler badge again.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 ай бұрын
Obviously there must be some level of parts sharing. But I know the Imperial is at least largely unique. And a small correction - the Chrysler brand name reappeared on Imperials in 1971 (“Imperial By Chrysler”), but left again for 1974 and 1975. Additionally, Wikipedia states that the ‘67 and onward cars use the “standard Chrysler body” with Imperial styling, but that is not correct. They were no longer full frame cars, but the lines and exterior styling are not even similar between the two for ‘67 and ‘68. Starting with the fuselage cars in ‘69, the main body appears to be the same - so I’m assuming that is what you are referring to. Why did I just go and research all of those details? I wish I knew 🤣

Actually , I wasn't going to ask about that Imperials "Bo Duke" off road Capabilities but , you do , you 🤦‍♂️ I wouldn't say , mistakes were made . I'd say , excessive fun was experienced 😬

Excessive fun indeed. Haha. Yes, many (all?) of the exhaust studs on these heads go into water. Leaking there is an issue we’ve experienced a couple of times now.

I like the green pickle Impi. A big boat floaty Luxor barge. Even if it’s the stripe model. But the blue chipper her is the impi drop top. That’s the really cool one.

I’m sure you’re right, but I much prefer to have a roof

@@DeadDodgeGarage I guess when you live with rain or drizzle for 10 out of 12 months every year, I understand the desire and preference for a roof. I will rent a convertible, but buy a hardtop.

My brother bought one of those . Was a fine specime. We pulled the engine out. Threw it in a 70 super bee and made it to the track. Looking back. We used to throw small block Chevy engines in the imperial. Then derby them. A small block Chevy will run longer than any other engine without h2o. Just saying ; )

That car is awesome! I almost bought a 4 door just like it a few years ago. I decided against it because I wanted my 1974 ‘Cuda restored instead.

I had this exact same land yacht back in my teens only in gold (removed that grandma wheel skirt though). Man was that a factory sleeper! Literally ripped the left rear tire from the rim showing off at work doing donut burnouts in the parking lot. Should have never sold it.

👍 I like it! Good stuff! Was that 2 dimmer switches on the floor? Hmmm. I miss the “floating” ride & steering wheel turning ease of the old cars. Thx for the videos, J!

18:00 If you had "The Director's Option" in the Imperial, you would have a work table in the back and swivel seats to turn around and use it.
