This is NOT about HSS vs ND filters, maybe we'll talk about nd filters in another video. In this video, learn flash photography in this high-speed sync tutorial about easy flash photography.
Learn the WHY and HOW of High-Speed Sync Flash Photography in this Easy HHS Flash Tutorial. Let me know what you think.

Nicely and quickly done Joy. That said, I believe for most (beginners to strobes) watching this video, it might have been nice to start with the Sunny 16 rule explanation, start at ISO 100/1/100th and change your exposure from there - and explain why when changing your aperture from 7.1 to 2.0 (in stops), you had to increase your shutter speed (in stops) to where you ended up in HSS. Overall, appreciate the effort and clean and quick video.

Lovely work plus the benefits of the catch lights in her eyes using HSS as opposed to just natural light. But maybe a follow up video explaining HSS light trade off. Any newbies or enthusiasts trying to replicate this with a standard camera speedlight (i.e 600ex or sp910 equivalent) using a softbox will be thinking their HSS sync settings are not working properly. As their flash output is going to be drastically reduced to 1/4 power on average. Obviously not an issue with the B2 or average high wattage strobes.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 3 жыл бұрын
They wouldn't have much of a problem replicating this. I definitely wasn't at full power here on my strobe, so if anything they'd just move the light a little closer ;-) Catch lights are a plus for sure - esp in her eyes!!!

@@VanessaJoy Right! :) But I think the whole point of using HSS is to get the shallow-dark background while maintaining perfect exposure for the subject. Because I assume with f/2, iso 100, ss 1/200 and using natural light subject would be in perfect exposure with blown-out shallow background. Isn't? :)

As a R6 owner, which flash system would you recommend getting? I was aiming for the Godox V1, but heard that it doesn't work in TTL + HSS mode due to Canon new hotshoe communication. Unfortunately the Canon flashes are too expensive for me.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 3 жыл бұрын
If I were you I would get into a solid system that you can grow with later, I would personally not buy a godox anything, but instead look for used profoto equipment like the Profoto A1. awesome high quality flash that’ll never die on you but there are two newer flashes since that model so you’ll probably find it used had a great price

Personally, if I were you, I would get this: adorama.rfvk.net/zQ5K6 It’s a great buy, even tho it’s used, and you’ll have a ton more power and faster recycle time. Plus then you’ll be in the Profoto system so when you’re ready for strobes, this will work with them

If you did not have a flash with you to do this set up for HSS would you use a neutral density filter ?
@VanessaJoy

No because without flash The neutral density filter is only making the exposure darker. I don’t need the exposure darker necessarily I need it to be able to work with my flash. I would use a neutral density filter if I had a flash that did not have high-speed sync

There is no way for me to freeze a dancer using 1/250 shutter speed. For poses that don't require any action i often don't use High Speed Sync only if i need to have shallow depth of field during the day.
