You ever get that feeling -- while you're buying bed sheets, horse feed, and patio furniture -- that what's really missing from your life is a tackle box revolver? I know, me too! Sears Roebuck also believed their customers felt that way, so they asked High Standard to design just such a revolver. And in 1955, we got the High Standard Sentinel -- a 9-shot .22LR wheel gun.

@@baeo.wolffe5179 Yes, and the steel-framed Performance Center gun. But they don't seem to want to put real sights on the lightweight snubs. And I'm not talking about kit gun target sights either, those would snag like hell on a pocket. But some sort of dovetailed fixed sights a la the PC gun coupled with an alloy frame would make for a much more usable pocket rocket, and Smith seems hell-bent on never doing that.

They were good guns which a lot of old men liked. They had all been through wars and the depression and they could shoot. The break-top style was noted for fine accuracy too, equal to S&W or Colt. Like Dan Wesson High Standard isn't a common name but those who know what they are respect them greatly

When I first got into law enforcement one of my coworkers had a Hi-Standard MkIV snubby she carried when off. To me they seem to be cosmetically designed to give that much wanted (at the time) Detective Special look. Those are my favorites, although I do appreciate the lines of these older models, being something of an "older model" myself, LOL. With the sentinel shown in the video, I can now clearly see the ancestry to the Ruger revolvers. Great lines from a time when "budget" did not have to mean "cheap." As for a modern version, I'd love to see a modern copy but the Charter Arms Pathfinder is about as close as it seems to get for relatively inexpensive DA .22 revolvers.

I am an old High Standard fan and shooter of their top quality .22 target pistols. What a lot of people don't know is that the "store brand" handguns and shotguns was their bread and butter. They couldn't make money on the Supermatic Target series because they were expensive to manufacture and there was not such a huge demand for them. Their flagship pistols were subsidized by "big box" sales of entry level .22 semi-auto and revolvers, and shotguns. Their shotguns were very good quality. When big box stores dropped the sales of handguns and, subsequently shotguns and rifles, High Standard lost their bread and butter. They had to compete against Ruger's Standard Auto at about the same price, or Ruger "single six" .22 revolvers. Their "bread and butter" ended up being their undoing. Too bad. My old High Standard Supermatic Citation is my most used handgun and is outstanding. IMO the best .22 target handgun ever made. The best trigger pull of any firearm I have ever handled and the build quality is amazing! There were a lot of Sentinels made and parts are actually easily available if needed. Both Numrich and Ebay lists just about every part for Sentinels.

Sorry to hear of your indisposition. Back in April of '20 I got what I was told was a very mild case of the great pestilence. For most of two weeks I suffered from the on and off achy blahs. There were a few days where the slightest exertion wiped me out. But otherwise, it was just like having a touch of the flue that last a lot longer than I cared for. That said, I do realize I was fortunate. Last year my cousin and her husband picked it up and had to be rushed to hospital on Thanksgiving Day. She died five days later. Best wishes for a swift recovery.

A very nice informative video that goes well with my 1966 R-103. Thanks for another video I love. Mine came from an estate sale, a year ago, with the modest price of $200, little wear, a small patch of rust, and just some gummy residue inside to be removed. All in all I prefer my S&W 63-3 j-frame and my S&W 617-6 k-frame 22s. BTW all three were purchased to economically practice double action and largely it was your videos that are responsible for what skill I have with double action. From what I've seen in review videos I've concluded that the recently released Diamondback Sidekick uses the identical cylinder and crane mounting of the Hi Standard Sentinel being that it has a nine shot cylinder with relief cuts for dry firing and the crane appears to be mounted with the same sort of spring loaded pin.

Don't know about High Standards Revolvers, but if you can find a High Standard Model B or H-D, in good shape. One of the best Target Pistols ever made. Mine is vintage 1936, and it will still drive tacks, and outshoot every Ruger that's went up against it. Triple K owns the original magazine specs, and they make a very good, but slightly pricey replacement (around $80). BTW, the US Army used the Model B and H-Ds to train soldiers to use the 1911. Same grip angle and basic sights.

I inherited one of these little gems. It’s a good shooter and a nice little snubbie.

I have one of these. They are so much fun to shoot and if you shoot it like a cop from the 60’s it’s very accurate for a snub.

I am 56 years old and when I was a wee lad, my uncle had a copy of Chic Gaylord's book "Handgunners Guide" on his kitchen bookshelf. If memory serves, Chic designed a "custom shoulder holster" for actress Jane Russell for carrying one of these. He also used them extensively in his shooting demonstrations.

High Standard 22LR Sentinel Deluxe 4" R-107 was the first gun I ever bought about 50 years ago. Still have it, and love having the 9 shot capacity.

The Taurus 942 sounds like the modern equivalent he was hoping for at the end of the video and just like Chris I shall now take a nap.

Thanks Chris, My favorite Uncle {R.I.P.} Had a High Standard 9 shot Revolver in .22lr, His was a single action, And he would let me take it out all day long, He and my Aunt Minnie lived way out in the country, He lived off the land, Hunting, Fishing, Live catching Bullfrogs, They were very tasty fried, He only went to town to buy coffee, sugar, cornmeal and ammo of course, and only had an outhouse and a well, He had lots of Guns and would let me shoot as many as I wanted, Man those were some fun times for a 11 and 12 year old boy, I could go on but this is longer than planned, Thanks for the fond memories. 👍 Lucky Gunner Rocks.

Years ago, we would go from Michigan to a restaurant in Canada. Delicious frog legs. That was back in the 60's. Haven't seen any since. Very popular in France and Asia.

Great little kits gun. Thanks for featuring this great little gun. Btw, take a look at the diamondback sidekick, very much like the high standard single 9…which is similar to the sentinel mechanics.

I have a 3" blued with wood grips I picked up a few years ago for $300 and it's an awesome plinker. I like to have friends shoot it and struggle with the heavy double action trigger pull.
