Revlon's upscale brand was called Ultima and was sold in department stores, but I don't think the general Revlon brand was. Ultima had a perfume called Maroc which was magnificent. If you ever get the chance to smell the original Maroc from Ultima II, Charles Revson, I highly recommend it. I had both Maroc and Xia Xiang years ago and ended up tossing them during a house move; I've been kicking myself ever since.

Love this video so much. 💕 Revlon never left the department stores.. Predominantly skin and lipstick have continued to stay. I still love this brand, quite iconic 💄✨

I have many fond memories of Revlon and I still enjoy their lipsticks and their latest glowy foundation. I have Fire & Ice fragrance and I think it is quite good. I need to smell Jontue again. It's been a long time. Thanks for reminding me of older forgotten fragrances!

I remember Ultima II and I loved that brand! Ioved their makeup, and their U II fragrance in the late 80's/early 90s. It came in a round bottle and the liquid was this bright chartreuse color and had an amazing fresh musky scent, definitely a spring or summer type of perfume.

I remember receiving a shit ton of perfumes in my teens from my parents for xmas. Electric youth debbie gibson was sooo good and mailbu. My favorite was coty tribe. Kinda like alien, NOTHING smelled like it at the time. I tried to buy a bottle and people are selling it for $100-$200!! I wont pay that. That Perfume was $10 back in the day. Ill just buy niche for that price. Also all those drug store perfumes were soooo long lasting too. I miss those days!!! U can't find any drug store long lasting scents anymore

I’m 65, and I do remember Revlon as a drugstore brand. I still wear Revlon lipsticks to this day. I remember Moon Drops and Intimate as two beautiful Revlon perfumes, though they were probably too old for me at that time. I think I traded a bottle of Coty Wild. Musk (not my type, I was a Jovan musk girl) for a bottle of Intimate and wore it anyway. It was so beautiful to my nose. That’s been 50:years ago. I also wore original Charlie as a teen, and my mom wore Norell when going out in the evening. Charlie and Norell were very much mother/daughter fragrances to me, Charlie for my day time bopping around, and Norell as a sophisticated evening perfume for my mother. I don’t know whether or not you’re familiar with Norell, but I’m guessing you’d love it, a rich green and floral perfume. Keep an eye out for it in the wild. I had Charlie White in the late 90s or early 2000s. It was probably a drugstore purchase. I remember it as surprisingly charming, floral, aquatic, summery. I think it had a watermelon note. I haven’t smelled the other Charlies but I’m curious now. There are so many! Oops, I forgot, I have another one somebody sent me, Charlie Oriental in a celadon green plastic or vinyl coated bottle. It smells like Opium, obviously intended to. This “orientalism” was very trendy at the time, though its release date was late 80s, which seems a bit late for the Opium genre. When I was 18 or 19 I discovered Jontue. It was my signature for a while, and I received compliments galore on that. And I just recently bought Ciara. I didn’t know it back in the day. Ciara and I are still getting acquainted. The first time I wore it I smelled only strong sweet raspberry incense punks and nothing else. The second time I wore it I smelled Bal à Versailles (I’m a huge fan of that). Today, I’m wearing it for the 3rd tjme, and I think I’m getting smoke, maybe even some sweet leather. It wants to reveal itself slowly I suppose. I think Ciara is going to be a bit of a chameleon. So far I’m loving it. That’s my Revlon lineup. Apologies for the lengthy post but it’s fun to share these things. Oh no! I forgot Jean Naté concentrated cologne! It was soooo good, now sadly discontinued.

OMG I read Estee Lauder's autobiography over and over. Very interesting. She said Mr. Revson was not the nicest of people. But she was decades before her time. Gift with purchase is all Estee Lauder. Fascinating read, I highly recommend it. Your library system can probably get it for you. It's entitled Estee: A Success Story. You'd love it. She talks about the fragrances and the bottles and choosing colors and names of things. Fun stuff. I'm just that kind of history/business book nerd. LOL

thanks for this, i love vintage scents and have been really getting into revlon too. i feel like i had charlie when i was young but can't remember it at all, i need to smell it again one of these days. charlie gold is so pretty, totally does seem like a sophia grojsman creation. the revlons i currently have are ciara, fire and ice, charlie oriental and jontue-all stunners. on my to try list are ajee, unforgettable, downtown girl and a couple of the jontue flankers. i may have to add lasting and xia xiang now, too!

Gosh…. I’m a decade older than you & I don’t remember purchasing anything other than ‘maybe’ Jontue? (I really didn’t become fascinated with perfumes until 2019, tho😉) …But, I DID absolutely love listening to you discuss Revlon & Estée & these vintage fragrances & sharing this interesting bit of reflection/history❤

You really are very knowledgeable about fragrances! I am thrilled to hear someone talk about all those different Charlie flankers! I LOVE original Charlie but only have Charlie Red flanker which reminds me of the smell of after-coloring conditioner in some Revlon hair dye boxes! I do like it a lot but I am looking for the original Charlie. I am glad to know you think Charlie Blue is similar! I will have to get that one next! Yes I sold Ciara from a department store. I worked for Ultima 2 cosmetics (considered Revlon's upscale cosmetic line) and it was one from our line. So were Maroc and Norell. I've never heard that Ciara was intended to cover up cigarette smoke!! I LOVE Ciara! Once when I was waitressing as a teenager, one of the other waitresses came running up to me one day and told me that my perfume (Ciara) was turning HER boyfriend on! (He also worked at the restaurant). I can totally believe that Ciara was made to cover up cigarette smoke! It's so incense-ey. Cheers! Great videos!

Ah, this is a good one! I wore the heck out of Charlie and Jontue back in the day. My husband still really loves Charlie on me, but I've become allergic to the moss, so I'm afraid my Charlie days are over :) I didn't know that it was competing with Estee Lauder Estee - very interesting! I love the history behind the houses and the fragrances. I haven't tried any of the Charlie or Jontue flankers but I should. I've tried Intimate, but I can't really remember it well. My favorite Revlon fragrance that I do currently wear is Fire & Ice.

Fire and ice.!!! Omg. I remember that being soo good! I recently smelled all the Charlie's and in my mind i was thinkig of fire and ice. Not realizing its a stand alone perfume. Thats good to know bc the charlies were awful. And i remember them being quite good back in the 90s. Particularly charlie white, being my favorite. I smelled red &blue and they were bad imo. But im gona hunt down fire and ice bc that one was awesome!

Revlon owns a bunch of brands. The purchased Elizabeth Arden several years back. They own Juicy Couture, Elizabeth Taylor, Britney Spears, and a bunch of other designer and celebrity brands. You can see all of them on their corporate website.

The real reason I'm commenting: the pencil shavings note is a dead giveaway for cedarwood.🌳 As perfumers, our common materials to supply this note are Cedarwood Atlas/Cedarwood Texas (woody but both somewhat sweet) and Cedarwood Virginia (dryer, not sweet, and probably the source of your pencil-sharpener note). These are useful bases used for substantivity of the perfume and (in my limited experience) are an easier sell to women than darker musks which can be used for a similar purpose. Men will go for animalic musks 🦔🐂 but I find that amber/cedar and the light musks🦌work better for many ladies and I prefer to formulate with them, or fruitier bases if appropriate, in gentle fragrances whenever possible. The branding and media footprint for Charlie back in the day always had a tomboyish feel to me. Young women who wanted to gain the same freedoms as men back in the 1970s era of 2nd-wave feminism, but who also wanted to wear fragrance and feel beautiful when off-duty. Anyway, if this is a clueless viewpoint in retrospect from the 21st I can always plead the im-just-a-guy defense. Love the channel and the midwestern viewpoint, please continue to review and post!
