Not sure why it took so long for the youtube algorithm to suggest this video, but cheers man! this is one of the most indepth reviews of the waterborne surf adapter i've seen! great job, and your English is great! also, I don't mind reading subtitles, that's how the world goes round man. reading is fundamental! I'm one of the early kickstarter backers, and I got the heavy bamboo 32inch complete and still struggling to learn how to pump correctly. Seeing how you do it effortlessly on so many different boards gives me lots of hope! Keep up the good work dude, greets from Amsterdam ;-)

I've watched other Waterborne videos trying to explain the technology and keep coming back to this one again & again. Your 'spaghetti English' is delightful and fine! Then again, I watch foreign language films all the time with subtitles. Your technical understanding and demonstration of skating and Waterborne enriches my understanding. So I keep watching it and picking up new bits of understanding every time I watch this video. My main use is for exercise and "flat" pumping. I'm not a skate bowl or pump track user. Just cruising and rising on roads or smooth areas. I use a 22" Penny board which for many is considered unstable. But if one can ride a 22" Penny board, one can cruise almost anything. :)

9 month ago your video gave the finale impulse to decide for the Waterborne system and I don't regret anything about it: I had never tried a surfskate before but figured it out within minutes - I think I had an "unfair" advantage though because many years ago before I picked up skateboarding I had one of these 90's snakeboards/"streetboards" and riding a surfskate feels pretty much like riding something in between a snakeboard and a skateboard. However - the Waterborne system gave me many hours of joy, and sometimes I go out late at night to skate a short 50 metre stretch of asphalt around the corner for half an hour and end up returning 3 hours later. To roll up and down this stretch of road over and over again with a regular cruiser would be of little fun, but thanks to snaps and slide variations this flat road is as entertaining to me as a skatepark. Initially I skated my 30" cruiser + Waterborne with Randal style 160mm RKP trucks, but a few month ago a dude on the street had gifted me an early 1980's Alva "Bill Danford Mini" for some reason and its Variflex 180mm SKP trucks boosted the board even more - can't wait for the season to begin. All this is owed to your video only - thank you so much! 🖤

Great review: combination of technical substance and stoke! You covered all of the aspects - board, truck and combinations - really well. And it is entertaining! I just got the adapter, should be getting the deck in a few days. I'm thinking a wider deck might be better to lock in for the turns and lean, about 9.5"/242 mm wide, gentle radial concave and a 22.5"/572 mm wheelbase - a little more stable, but hopefully short enough to turn with good carving response and still allow using the kicktail (no flex, unfortunately). TKP front (Bennett, very divey and surfy already) - will try RKP and TKP in the rear and see which works better. Trying to decide between 5.0/129mm hanger width or 6.0/150 mm hanger width on the trucks. Trying to emulate a mid-length single fin egg kind of feel. Thanks for the inspiration! Grazie mille!

I’ve been using the Waterborne adapters for many years, though I set mine up very differently and I believe much better in performance in several ways. I had an epiphany about five years ago that because the front gets so much additional turning ability with the adapters, that the rear trucks no longer had to help with turning duties, and in fact could be reversed(flipped) to face the same as the front truck. This means the rears turn in the same direction as the front, but not as much. This resists any possible wobbles and instability at higher speeds and still retain the nimble handling as if it was normally setup. The rears will now turn into the corners, pushing under you giving support and maintain grip as they shoot for the exit rather than pushing outwards. During pumping and carving the rear makes a straighter path than the front, more like a real surf board. It’s the next level in handling for a surf-skate. Obviously this only works with the adapters or at least a surf style front truck; if the trucks are matched in turn ratio it would just crab sideways. Usually in skateboarding you have to choose maneuverability and carving at slower speeds or stability at high speeds. By reversing, or I should say UN-reversing the rear trucks gives you both if you use the adapters. Give it a try, it’s great to get feedback on this setup trick. Thanks!
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy Жыл бұрын
it seems a good solution to do long distances, when I don't have the back railer (I prefer without to be lighter) I use an angled riser to reduce the turn. But to achive what you do I used the back railer completely locking the truck with a very stiff bushing kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsmVlLh217a8p5c.html ...I do this stuff just to experiment the speed, it pump a lot fadter and zero speed wobbles. but I still prefer some turn in the back truck to help with the snaps and turn in very small spaces. Thanks for sharing, is a good tip for who is without the backrail
@sageoz9886
@sageoz9886 Жыл бұрын
@@SkateTherapy funny because I prefer using it with both the back rail and reversed in all situations now. The back rail seems necessary to me in order to allow enough lean for the front to work well.
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy Жыл бұрын
@@sageoz9886 the back rail delay the turn of what ever you have behind I totally get that you like it, you could enjoy e very stiff bushing, it wouldn't matter the side of the truck and just changing the bushing you can get back to a very turny or not turny setup.
@sageoz9886
@sageoz9886 Жыл бұрын
@@SkateTherapy stiff bushings don’t at all make up for stability when you need it, it’s just creating a higher threshold before it starts a cavitation in a speed wobble. Stiffer bushings just create more resistance to turning ability. True stability comes from wheel geometry, and having the wheels turn opposite the fronts will always create instability as opposed to turning with them which is inherently stable.

The best comprehensive review for this adapter. I have one question, in your experience, what effect does having a larger wheelbase, and even truck size, on the performance of the adapter when pumping? does it increase or decrease speed or acceleration?
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 5 жыл бұрын
a larger wheelbase reduce the acceleration on low speed, but it definitely improve the pumping when you are going faster, so on a longer deck you get higher top speed. For the truck size is more about stability, but the effect is similar, a narrow truck is easier to turn, but using less power you will get less speed and you also feel less confident as is easier to loose grip. Narrow trucks and short wheelbase are good for tight turn in short sessions, large trucks and long wheelbase are good for pumping in long distance.

well you take off a lot of turning in this way, but it will still work. If you don't have the back railer the best solution should be to buy a regular skate truck for the front (tkp) at least six inch, slide make some cheap and good quality 6 inch tkp. if you have the back railer just buy another rvk kingpin truck. even a cheap one most of them mount it well, you have just been unlucky

Hi! I use surfskate for exploring cities when I travel. I love the Yow truck and I use it with a 29 inch deck for portabilty. What would you think is the Best set up for exploring and comuting? Is the water borne truck better than the Yow for long distance pumping?
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 5 жыл бұрын
for long distance a longer deck is always better, but the waterborne also in short deck is the easiest thing to pump that I ever tried. However what you could do in you yow is to deweged your back truck with an angled riser, you would reduce the turning radius improving leaning and getting more grip, maybe less fun at low speed, but when you go faster you will feel the benefit with a much higher cruise speed and less effort.
@simpleandar9687

@@SkateTherapy Great advice! Thanks. I was about to buy a new Yow but now I am really tempted with the water borne. Does the carbón fiber deck also make a huge differnece, or is it mainly the front truck?
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 5 жыл бұрын
@@simpleandar9687 the carbon fiber is lighter, but that's not so important, what is cool from this board, the scorpion, are the cuts in the tail which make it extremely flexible, in the start it feel weird, but soon you will appreciate it a lot, absorb every vibration and help in the pump and in smoothing every carve. However I find more interesting their longer deck, the gemini, as is shaped to avoid wheelbites being a drop through, that's something that you cannot achieve with another deck, cause the wood would be to fragile with those cuts on it, it should feel great to have this pump on a low rid, however I didn't try it ..but is a matter of taste, I must say the scorpion is for rider with experience, it is wild and you need to have total control of your balance cause if you go to deep in the carve you will loose it due to the truck size, too narrow for the leaning. To be clear this is a setup for smoothness and long distance pumping and extreme chill ...if you are more hardcore and like to feel the ground and sweat you may prefer other brands.

I have a 37" pintail with caliber 2 trucks and it honestly kind of is a bummer with the surfskate. The trucks are naturally stiff and high, so now the board is heavy and high and even though it can turn on a dime it doesn't feel manuverable. I am going to try smaller shorter trucks on the 37 inch deck and see if that helps. If not, the surf skate is going on my 30" cruiser with traditional kingpin trucks. I have a strong feeling that these things feel way more fun and maneuverable on smaller boards and I can't wait to try out that different combos.

I wish Waterborne included the 2x14mm risers and 2" bolts and nuts with the full kit (adapter and backrail), so we could experiment with both options. I decided to put this o my son's 31" deck and the backrail makes it too unstable). Now I can't find the bolts and nuts in that size to just use the front surf scate adapter.
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
the instability is a feeling, it actually make it more stable as for the same leaning the back truck will turn less, on the other hand it make it harder to slide. Anyway you can try to put harder bushings on the backrailer. I prefer it with harder busings in the board side, while those soft bushings are great in the truck

Hello, I followed your advice and got a waterborne surf adapter. 😁 I just like to.ask, what do you think the best size of wheels and what is the best hardness of wheels for practicing surf maneuvers? Thanks
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
on the first period 70mm 78a is always the best balance, then is up to you if you want to go harder to slide better or keep it soft to be smooth amd grippy, the size can go down to 62mm if you like to be closer to the ground and you don't skate too rough grounds. But until you don't desire differently I would stick with 70mm 78a with a decent wideness and lip.

@@SkateTherapy thank you 😁 I'm currently using Orangutan, off-set, 70mm x 55mm, 78a, with sharp,square edges . I wonder if there is such thing as 70×48 with rounded edges so it slides just a bit so I could replicate the kicking of the tail like in surfing. Have you tried any wheel like that? .Also what is the next harder wheel to 78a? Thank you.

it should work, but they sell replacements anyway, I've been told that an harder bushing doesn't feel significantly different, I think that the biggest change would come from placing a Tkp or a rkp under it, that would change a lot the leaning

@@samsungtv4u the sidewinder will be perfect, will turn more, but feeling more stable, the backrail for some riders feel even too much surfy. For the wheel size all depend from the ground and your style, if they are very good ones you can surf smoothly also over 63mm and they will keep the deck lower

Im so jealous. Im a skiier and I want to pump my roller skates. I like your technical attitude toward this sport. Im wondering if the waterboard will work on skates. Bont makes a roller skate with a front and back truck.
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 3 жыл бұрын
mm will be crazy, the quads are actually mini skates ..but on a board you pump with both your legs, in a rollerskate from front to back truck you only have your foot involved to make a torsion, look very akward. ..I guess that technically skating with rollerblades is actual pumping, you are pushing sideway to move forward, is the same concept
@tormarquis
@tormarquis 3 жыл бұрын
@@SkateTherapy thanks for thinking about this with me. If you ever watch pro ski racers, they pump like hell, the ski does all the flex, and the side cut of the ski makes the radius of the turn. I also thought about mounting inline wheels side by side on the tip and tail to make it fatter in the front and the back. All this mounted on a ski like frame. By the way ski racers also pump with both legs ...inside edge of one ski and outside edge of other ski
@SkateTherapy
@SkateTherapy 3 жыл бұрын
now I'm starting to get it better, you don't really need more turn like surfskate adapter, you need more flex like the pump that you make on a longboard, not upperbody torsion, but pushing sideways. maybe some sort of carbon fiber betwen the shoe and wheel line that produce a rebound when you push sideway, like the protesis of the runners without a foot, now there are even running shoes using carbon fiber to give an extra spring. You would probably need a longer line of wheels to stay stable pumping in high speed. There is a skateboard, can't remember the name now that work like this, If I'll remember I will link it. it would be poasible to copy the same concept. But he skateboard use a metal board betwheen deck and trucks and I guess it would be too heavy for rollerskates
