When USA squander 3 separate chances to go to the World Cup, you have to admit it’s deserved. Massive for Portugal and rugby as a whole they’ve qualified, because the USA are going to invest heavily if they qualify or not as they host it in 8 years, for Portugal this is a huge deal for increasing popularity and funding

Not really a shock IMO . The US have been substandard and dont play with passion . Look at the games between US and Chile . Chile played with so much passion and never gave up. Even when they were down 19 points in the second leg , they still found a way to win

We actually have. May 1994 when Qualifying for the 95 RWC. Wales largest ever win (11-102). Wales had quite a hefty team out for the time (bearing in mind they'd recently won the 5N).

Didn't show the disgraceful refereeing in the 71 minute gifting USA the ball when Portugal had a scrum in usas 5 meter line.... Well deserved Portugal very nice wide passing quick rugby

Rubbish. It was the gift of a last-gasp penalty to Portugal that gave them the game, and it followed on from another gift penalty to them when they could have been about to concede a try.

I think the problem was with the TMO, the supposed knock on wasnt shown I think. Nonetheless I was furious, it was a tremendous play by Vincent Pinto that could have decided the match. In retrospective it's meaningless now that we won

First, congratulations Portugal. You have been one of the most exciting teams in World Rugby for the last 2 years and fully deserve this qualification. Now USA... Why is Nate Augsburger playing on the wing? He's a scrum half for San Diego Legion usually. Makes no sense to me, I'm sure I've seen lots of local talent in MLR ripping it up on the wing. He is an experienced and talented player but this seems ultra-conservative to me. Contrast that to Portugal's exciting fast flowing backline regularly beating the first man and keeping the ball alive. Can't see how Gold can continue after this whole qualification campaign (unless the Union has no money to hire a new coach)

Really impressed with the standard of play for Tier 2 nations. This is far more entertaining to watch than the top teams where the efficiency of defences has ruined the game as a spectacle.

@RugbyPass - early on the video jumps from play to a penalty, but we did not see a foul! Then at 5.46 we were watching open play on the left side of the pitch, and then the vid jumps to the right side of the pitch!

USA’s lost to essentially the same three teams. Uruguay, Chile and Portugal all have offenses that have movement for second level attack and inserts, use attacking kicks and quick phase speed. USA is using this Joe Schmidt offense that sucks without the defensive mobility to keep things contained. The talent is available in the US, just not being implemented or taught correctly.

The talent will keep being wasted as long as the US still believes they can turn NFL rejects into world beaters at age 23-25, wasting money on getting ageing semi-retired big names to play on their league or in hiring "never have been" coaches like Gary Gold. They're being overtaken by much smaller and poorer unions (Portugal has a budget of 1.5 million USD, the US had a record budget of 27 million USD in 2018) who have opted to invest as much as they can in grassroots rugby, academies, and trying to constantly blood new generations of players against better opposition. The US needs to learn from the example of Japan. For all the money the league in Japan had, for all the Super Rugby talent "raising the level of their domestic competition", except for their short-lived minor success when John Kirwan tried to buy a squad for Japan by importing players, their major breakthrough only came after Eddie Jones came along and not only developed a coherent style of play for Japan, but also invested in their grassroots and in developing home grown players.

USA, my team, congrats Portugal. I'm crushed but not surprised. How the U.S. has not improved while other countries had surpassed them by leaps and bounds is beyond me. We have the talent. I believe the coaching is lacking. We seem to just copy everybody else. The Whole U.S. kicking game is befuddling to say the least. Gary Gold is Mr. kick the ball away. Where is the inside ball? Where is the pick and go? Where is there any imagination? It's one out, one out, one out and box kick. One out, one out, one out and kick deep.

Don't be too hard on them, they are in a sport that is still in its infancy in the USA. You can't expect them to play like the Springbokke or the All Blacks just yet. Give them time.

Timmy B World Rugby awarded the hosting rights to the USA for the 2031 world cup....as a way of marketing the sport in an economic powerhouse such as the USA. FIFA did the same in 1994 with the Football World Cup. The USA were a minnow footballing nation....but FIFA wanted the USA to host the World Cup because the USA has tremendous marketing potencial. It is the same old story. Where there is money involved...the governing bodies of world sport are very interested....and there is no better place to market your sport than the economic powerhouse that is the USA. Unfortunately neither football or rugby will ever grow in the USA to the point where the USA will have a competitive world cup aspirant.....as the USA is a country whereby other sports such as NFL, baseball, basketball etc are more culturally institucionalized compared to rugby or football.

Neither team deserved to lose this. Great shame that USA won't be in the World Cup. Their style of play and their progress has been great to watch. But Portugal are a dynamic, fast outfit who certainly deserve to be in France 2023.

The rugby must progress first in countries where it isn’t strong. There are only 5 or 6 countries which can win the WC, 6 or 7 other teams which can give them problems. The rest of the 20 countries qualified are only there to play the world cup. So 4 or 8 more teams aren’t essential.

That seals the deal. I am no longer an USA Rugby fan. I’ve been a fan since 1984 and a season ticket holder since 2004. I officially will not be renewing my plan next season nor will I watch on tv ever again. I will support Japan where they know how to beat Portugal and score more than 16 points on them. It was a pool of 4 teams (+ Hong Kong and Kenya). Each team met the other 3. With this 16-16, Portugal and the USA have the same number of points (12) after their 3 matches. It is therefore necessary to decide between them with first the match which opposes them, but it is a draw. So, then we decide between the difference in points scored during the 3 group matches. And there, Portugal has +113, the USA +96. So Portugal is ahead and qualifies.

Look it’s history now but the referee could have easily given ANOTHER penalty right under the posts for USA holding on after that missed drop kick. If Portugal had missed that last kick then the referee could have really messed things up for them by blowing too early.

Just watched the game and it was ugly by both sides. Doesn't matter who qualified if they play like this it will be a brutal WC.

Congrats Portugal but this is just sad for the USA. We've been moving backwards over the last 25 years. The last WC saw us put up a side that for the first time was made up of entirely pros. It's not talent. We have guys starting in the Premiership and Pro 14. And we can talk development but there are way more teams than when I played in the 90s. And we can blame football and this and that but rugby union is the #4 sport in Australia and yet they're elite. I just watched Georgia beat Wales in Cardiff. 20 years ago the US and Georgia were equal. It's not like their players are playing domestically. Same for Argentina. I don't know if it's USA coaching or problems higher up but we have more talent than ever but the team looks small, slow, and not very physical. This is an epic failure by USA Rugby.

Look at Uruguay with hardly any players. US has enormous numbers of players. Something is going wrong (from Australia).
