Thanks for this video, and the many others that you’ve made. Your pioneering work is much appreciated!! Can you please post the diameter/material type for each ring that is discussed in this video? I’m specifically interested in the size of the ‘Medium’ rings...

Nice review. You didn't say why heavy rings are a risk (beyond trimming grams for a long approach). I prefer a light ring because it hurts less if it hits your body. My steel rings popped up and hit me in the elbow bone once. Ouch! I've since switched to aluminum.
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 7 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly I haven't had a lot of problems with the leash ring hitting me but several people told me they have. Smaller lighter rings would help but it still sucks to have metal slapping you haha. The biggest problem with heavy/large rings is that people RARELY use 2 of them. I'd pick 2 lighter approved rings any day over 1 bomber ring.

Your videos are really cool and inspiring not to highline! Can you make a video about harnesses appropriate for highlining and why? Thank you!
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 жыл бұрын
I can do that! But until I get that episode out, pretty much any climbing harness will do. I can't think of any normal climbing harness that wouldn't work for highlining. I like the Arc'teryx AR-395A harness. It's light and makes your wallet light too! :)

Balancing Earth's rasta leash is pretty much the only kind I've ever used. Never realized it was that much burlier than the industry standard. Good to know.

One dynamic rope is more than single redundant because of the multiple strands in the kernmantle. At least that's how I've had a guide describe it.

Are aluminum rings safe (strong enough) to use on a leash? Most other slackline/longline hardware is steel isn't it? And if aluminum rings are safe, why would you bother using steel?
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 5 жыл бұрын
Leashes only see 2kn on average. Aluminum rings are 10x stronger than that. So technically it is super good enough. We like redundancy so we use two. I hate steel because it is too heavy. I use 2 titanium rings in my system but now I use the new leashes from souz slacklines kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8xynreeyb7TpYk.html . People use steel because it makes them feel better :)

New to highlining. Whats the point of having the leash- ring redundancy if you are not using two ropes in the leash system. if the rope snaps, it doesnt matter if you used 2 or 10 rings. Help me with the maths here.
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 6 жыл бұрын
If you can make your leash redundant (by tying in 2x with 2 leashes) and not hate walking, then do it for sure. Redundancy is what keeps us alive in this sport, the more of it the better!
@davidcarlin1229
@davidcarlin1229 7 жыл бұрын
you say to make sure to regularly loosen your figure 8 so it's not rock hard, as this reduces the strength of the rope. do you have any evidence or studies that show this (on threaded climbing rope)? I've also heard that constant tightening and loosening of the knot can wear out the internal fibres.
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 7 жыл бұрын
I will pursue my sources of information and find out soon and will get back to you on this! From what I remember, a knot that is rock hard reduces the strength even more than the knot already reduces it. I'll let you know. I've heard it from 3 separate very reliable sources btw.
@davidcarlin1229
@davidcarlin1229 7 жыл бұрын
HowNOTtoHIGHLINE I've heard both things, but neither with a study to back it up. I would think that the tubular would make the bends not super sharp. and the forces the leash sees are so low it wouldn't make a difference. thanks for following up!
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 7 жыл бұрын
Your right. The forces are pretty minor and make the reduction of strength almost irrelevant. However it would be nice to know for sure. The tubular does make the bend less sharp but you need a 4" diverter to make a climbing rope 99% strength. This is the same idea as padding a double frost knot if tying a knot to hold your webbing rather than using a weblock. You can get 60 to 70% strength putting a 1.5" sleeve over it before tying it rather than just 50 to 60%.
@davidcarlin1229

HowNOTtoHIGHLINE for a while I changed my leash ring knot to a re threaded bowline to stop it getting super tight. but then I worried the constant rubbing as it was loaded/unloaded would wear it out quicker.
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 7 жыл бұрын
I just stopped falling and my knots stopped getting tight. Just kidding haha. I honestly don't worry about it that much unless I'm chillin by the anchor bored :). So the people who told me this just told me they don't know any official testing done on this, but it is commonly accepted by rope experts. I guess I need to get a break machine soon and find out for myself :)
@MauiMile
@MauiMile 7 жыл бұрын
I used to think that tubular is redundancy, but now you say it is just for reducing forces. Doesnt the fact that we use the unredundant leash make the other redundant points pointless? Cos if the only reason for not using double leash is preformance, I dont know what to think of that. Especially as the rope is inside the tubular, you can not check its condition?
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 7 жыл бұрын
Ideally we have redundancy in every point in a system but it's not realistic. No one wears 2 harnesses (though I have thought about it haha). I advocate for a double leash still today but rarely do it because it really is a pain in the ass. But something to consider is your leash sees a fraction of the force that it can actually hold where as parts of your anchors don't quite have a 10 to 1 safety ratio. Anchors and webbing breaking is very important for redundancy. Leashes won't fail, but getting distracted while tying in the 1 SINGLE TIME that you tie in for your session and then not finishing tying in properly.... can kill you. Therefore you shouldn't highline :)

@@HowNOT2 "Getting distracted while tying in . . . can kill you" Indeed. It hasn't happened to anyone I know, but I've seen cases when people came far too close. Add to that setting up and starting rappels. Get in the habit of having someone else double check your set up every time.

@MrUncut310
@MrUncut310 3 жыл бұрын
@@kylewog6522 it's a pain in the ass to thread it. Basically insert the rope as far as you can and then stroke the leash from the end of the rope inserted to the end of the leash. It should create small ripples which you can pull over the rope. It takes fucking ages. I would recommend ordering a leash with rope already inserted.

HowNOTtoHIGHLINE it causes Alzheimer's when cooked with 😝 No but seriously...just all the stuff I've read about aluminum and micro fractures. Steel will deform before breaking. But hey...I'm all about hearing different opinions. Plus, as I write this...I realize the back ups are there too.

The zerge ring comes in steel if it makes you feel better :) but what I like is that it can't break, the leash is around the webbing. It isn't holding anything, just eliminating a rope on rope problem. I asked why he didn't make it in plastic because I would have bought that one haha

Has anyone broken a leash ring just walking, not doing tricks that generate masive forces ?
@HowNOT2

even tricks don't generate massive forces. The leash would break way way sooner than the rings could.
