For the 100th Episode of "Walkarounds with Steve Magnante", we look at this 1971 Chevrolet Corvette LT1 convertible finished in its original color of Ontario Orange over a black interior and top. This corvette is highly original and retains its full numbers matching drivetrain. The only modification to the car is headers. The numbers matching 350 LT1 330hp still sport its original intake and carburetor. Drives absolutely fantastic and is as tight as a drum. The top is in like-new condition and works flawlessly. The Paint on the car is almost 100% original with only a couple of minor touch-ups performed over the years. If you are looking for an unmolested LT1 convertible look no further, this is it!
This car is headed to the North Country Auto Auction August 5th-6th next week!

Whoops there, Steve....'71 LT1s were ALSO low compression, ie. 9:1. '71 & '72 LT1s were basically the same, just different part no.s & net hp ratings....that's it. And, BTW, the rally wheels on '69-'82 Stingrays were all 15x8". And..... you're slipping here again...the '72 was STILL a solid lifter engine. In '73 the LT1's hydraulic lifter replacement was the L82......though it retained the LT1's aluminum pistons, 4-bolt mains, & forged steel crank. Another '71 indicator is that this is an early production Stingray in that it displays clear front turn signal lenses (w/amber bulbs)...later lenses were amber w/white bulbs, as they were in 1972.

Sweet! perfect car for celebration (of any sort). I owned a 1970 350/350 all original numbers matching car, loved it, and the car loved racing fuel. Like an idiot, sold it when the kids came, miss that car. Thanks Steve well done as always.

Nice Corvette. Thanks for the education on where to find the matching number on the engine. I really enjoy your videos Steve.

I thought that the '72 LT-1 in the Z/28 and Corvette still had solid lifters but was re-rated to 255 net horses. Nice survivor Corvette regardless!!

Yes they did, solid lifters thru 72 and then for 73, they basically took the LT1 and installed the L46 hydraulic cam, and iron intake and q-jet and created the L82 which still ran pretty good.

Nice review but wrong info on the 72 LT-1. Mine is an all matched 7k mile roadster survivor and the cam is as solid lifter as it gets. The 73 version was the L82 with a hydraulic cam and Q jet carb.

Square exhaust first appeared in 1970, along with minor updates to the front grill/parking lights and the side vents.

We need to go all the way with the VIN for the win: 1 for Chevrolet, 9 for Corvette, 4 as an even number means V8 equipped (as all 1971 Corvettes would be), 67 for convertible, 1 for 1971 model year, S for St. Louis, MO assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The trim tag will have 97 for Ontario Orange exterior paint and either 400 (vinyl) or 403 (leather) on the trim tag for black interior trim. The St. Louis, MO plant would produce Corvettes up until June 1, 1981 when production was transferred to Bowling Green, KY where it still is today. A little more about the stamping on the engine with the VIN. It is always the division (01 in this case for Chevrolet), 1 for 1971, S for St. Louis, MO and then the last six of the VIN sequence. If so, that means the block is the original one or was restamped with the original numbers. CGZ denotes a 350 LT1 with manual transmission. The "V" means the Flint, MI engine plant, and 0210 means Wednesday February 10, 1971 production. The engine production date should precede (or at least be the same date of, but that would be rare) the build date of the car since the engine was made before the car was assembled. So, if the build date of the car was say December 1970 and the engine is dated February 1971, we know something is amiss.

Steve love your show and enjoy watching you at Barrett Jackson but I have to correct you on one comment you made. The 72 LT1 is also a solid cam engine, identical to the 71 (same compression ratio) The difference in the LT1 horsepower numbers between 71 and 72 (330hp vs 255hp) is that GM moved to “net” hp numbers for 72 thus the lower number.
@M21L35
@M21L35 Жыл бұрын
This explanation is partially incorrect. The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) horsepower rating actually began in 1971 for GM. The '71 LT1 was rated @ 330 gross hp, though its SAE net-hp rating was 275. In '72 the net hp was 255, w/no gross hp ratings listed.

Just needs a set of cast aluminum rocker covers like it came with and the rear spring re-arched. Those stamped covers are at least a few years newer than the car, going by the welded-on brackets for wire harnesses.

Someday ill make a visit out there. I'm only in Burlington, ma. Question, I have a very rare solar orange pearl 2007 350Z. Except the title in not in my name. Basically, my mother inherited the car. But she gave it to me,its complicated. I don't know what its worth with only 37,000 miles. One of 300 or so painted that color.

Does anyone know how the white lettering on the tires work? I've watched 3 different '71 vette videos in a row and all three have different white lettering on the tires. I'm restoring a '71 and would love to know which is the correct lettering on the tire.

Standard tires were either Firestone Wide Ovals (as shown) or Goodyear Polyglas GT. Both raised white letters. Widely used replacement tires included Dunlop GT Qualifiers or BF Goodrich Radial T/A.

I thought it looked mighty tooted up in back, too. Pretty weird, I can't recall having seen a C3 Vette sit like that. Guess maybe fresh rear suspension stuff that hasn't settled yet? If it has the fiberglass monoleaf, do they even settle?

Does not look right with those base engine valve covers, don't know why anyone would get rid of the nice original LT-1 valve covers. Totally wrong on the cam, same solid lifter cam used 71 and 72. And yes you could get a/c in 72 but was still the same solid cam. Tach redline for all solid lifter engines was 6500, for the 72 LT-1 wifh a/c 5600 and for the base 350 5300. And the wheels are 15x8, that was a Corvette exclusive.
