Many Vistani work for Strahd and it is something of a deal that involves a degree of indentured servitude. Though it's weird because they can supposedly also come and go as they please including out of the Demiplane of Dread. It's one of those things where a number of things have been said to be true about them but it ends up not adding up. Like why they would choose to live in the plane to begin with. Though one of the terms of the agreement is that they are under Strahd's protection. So killing any of them is certainly a deal breaker.

1st, I love this, the mood, the voices, the story.. But, I wish Mark would give the players a chance to interact with the NPC and the other players a bit more. The narrative seems to be pushed a lot, and I see the player sit most of the time in silence. Just something for me, I'm sure i'm the only one who feels this way. :3

Playing a hero in a module tends to be far more linear than homebrew D&D content. The players most likely knew about this beforehand and are letting the story unfold.

I don't know about that, Mark often prompts the players to describe things their characters do. Roleplay doesn't revolve entirely around dialogue, it's how your character interacts with the world around them, and it think there's plenty here

The DMG has a general guideline for creating custom monsters and determining challenge ratings.

There's a process for entirely original monsters, but it's a lot of maths. Faster method; Find a creature of the CR you want that is similar, tweak it's abilities/equipment etc.

I love this campaign and I love all of you but could you maybe try to make it more.. internet/latency friendly? If there are sentences like "What would you like to do?" or "what are the others thinking?" then either no one is speaking for a while because they think someone else will answer or a few people speak at the same time because of the latency. Could you maybe try to refer to one person most of the time so that people know who should speak? That would make this perfect! Thank you

It's really common to skip death house. While it is a very brutal introduction to COS it has a tendency to kill characters. It doesn't fit the groups style to move through characters. The brutality if Cos can be conveyed in other ways. He appears to have started his party off as level 3

I was about to get mad at Mark for confusing the Assassinate's feature of having advantage on creatures that haven't taken a turn yet, with the effect of hitting a surprised creature to get an automatic critical hit.. It came damn close to dealing double Xiros' max HP and offing him. Surprised is a pseudo-condition that applies in the surprise round, which the spectre used for a dramatic entrance. Once combat is initiated, the assassin still has sneak attack on advantage rolls, and as stated that includes creatures with lower initiative in the first round of combat. If assassins did all sneak attacks with crits, it would break the game to smithereens. Although it can be done by luring enemies away one by one, killing them without their allies watching, it would be the most powerfull class in the game if it worked in open combat as well.

It's not so much pseudo as relative instead of absolute. Which is why 5E tries to stay away from the old idea of a Surprise Round as that has connotations that imply a different mechanic. Granted it's so complicated because of the relativity that most DMs that I'm aware of simply house rule it back to Surprise Rounds anyhow. The only reason it seems like a round at all is because once the fight really gets going everybody will be on their guard. And getting caught up by the three separate effects you get being the assassin subclass happens to more people than it doesn't. There is no reason to get mad at it because quite frankly it is bound to happen.
