I move around a lot when I sleep, sleeping on my side and also on my stomach. I switched to a quilt a few years ago, as I was tired of being sausaged to sleep in sleeping bags. I chose a completely open quilt, as it can also be used as a blanket. Much more practical and versatile. Comfort temperature -18°C (yes, 0°F 😄) ), and a 9 cm (3.5") thick inflatable mattress with an R-Value of 7. Yes, winter gear. The thickness of the mattress means you can fine-tune its firmness. Under this mattress, I put another thin Bundeswehr mattress, foldable, which protects the other against perforations (and btw adds 1 more R-factor point...). All tied up with quilt strips. The folding mattress can also be used as an internal backpack frame and insulating seat. Well, I use all this in summer too, with no other inconvenience than a little extra weight, but for a sleeping comfort I hadn't experienced before. It's heaven 😋 Too hot for summer, this system? Yes, sure, but all you have to do is open it, and there's no problem. I wondered about it, tested it, and it works. What's more, I don't have to worry about what equipment to take, as it will work whatever the conditions. Thanks for your calm rhythm of speech, it's almost relaxing 🙂 One more subscriber 🏵

I have a sleeping bag that you can fully unzip to use as a quilt. I love it!

Quilts also work great in a hammock - especially when paired with an under quilt

I keep a 0*(F) sleeping bag in my truck for emergencies, since Washington state winters can get chilly. But for hiking, car camping, and backpacking I'm now completely sold on quilts, and will never go back to a bag. They are just so much more versatile, while also being smaller and lighter. In extreme cold, a sleeping bag still wins, but I find that in extreme cold I just don't sleep outdoors anymore. 😆 Great explanatory video, and I just wanted to say I recently came across your channel and I've been enjoying it! Your cinematography on the coastal trail video I watched recently was extraordinary.

Great, simple explanation. There are also companies like Zenbivy that make a bottom sheet, so the quit acts even more like a sleeping bag / fully enclosed system. Yet another thing to consider, but I swear by them.

I use a bag and it’s great….i don’t have the issues in this vid…..I’m a side sleeper. I’ve tried quilts and they don’t work very well for me. They slide off and away when I need them most….in the wee hours of the night etc. Cheers!

There are various hostile lifeforms one may encounter when sleeping in the wilderness, and a quilt or a "woobie" (poncho liner) makes it easy to disentangle oneself from sleeping gear and get on the defensive.

Excellent video Hayley. I'm still deciding on whether to go a quilt (definitely from Neve if I do) or stick to a sleeping bag again. My old sleeping bag (20+ years old) has had it I think... It doesn't loft as much & the down is gathering in all the wrong places 😂 so probably won't meet its 0* (C) rating any more 🥶 I'm planning on hiking/camping over Autumn/Winter this year, so will need to upgrade soonish. I use a quilt as well. They are great for the flexibikity especially in 3 seasons. Not slept in one with snow so can't comment on that! I got mine created by a Tasmania cottage company called TierGear.

I just use my sleeping bag opened as a quilt and treat it as 2-in-1 thing :)

I have always taken a bag, seen many a night when people were cold in their quilt and I was toasty in my bag and weight difference was only 150g. Get a spark 2 bag weights 660g and can use it like a quilt. No brainer

I have a sleeping bag and have just started a 200k hike in Western Australia using an Aussie Zero G Gear synthetic quilt to combat possible condensation in a bivvy bag. You seem to have placed the strappy things on top of your sleeping mat, which would irritate me no end. Maybe it's the design, but my straps go underneath my inflatable mattress and form a snug fit diwn the side of my mattress.
