This is a hike I've been wanting to do ever since I moved to Phoenix last summer. Camelback Mountain is the highest peak of the Phoenix Mountain System reaching a height of 2,706 feet above sea level. It is the most iconic mountain in the Phoenix metro, and called Camelback because it literally looks like a camel laying on its stomach with the its prominent peak resembling a camel's hump.
The Echo Canyon Trail is cited as one of the most challenging hiking trails in all of Arizona. While only roughly 1 mile long, one must endure a steep climb of 1,200 ft through rocky terrain to reach the mountain summit. And this can be extremely difficult in the sweltering summer heat, so it's advised to climb during the winter season. Many people have lost their lives hiking and climbing Camelback Mountain.
Given its iconic status and challenging reputation, Camelback is the perfect hike if you come prepared - pace yourself, bring plenty of water, stay on the trails, and enjoy the challenge. The views at the top are incredible and standing on the summit is a rewarding experience.
Outro Song - Explorer's Theme written and performed by me on piano.

That's my brother on the sign. He was in a different area on the mountain when he chose to go off trail and climb without the proper safety equipment, falling 50 feet. He was 25 years old and an Arizona native. Thank you for sharing about the sign and reminding others to be safe.

Thanks for sharing, I am sorry for your loss - he must have been an adventurous guy! I watched your video on The Sibling Loss Group, very touching and fantastic work on your end bringing people together. Although my brother Connor and I climbed Camelback together, we both have another brother named Sean who died when he was only 16 days old due to birth defects. Even though he was only in the world for a short period he lives on in our hearts and we continue to celebrate him. Great work on the signage at Camelback and to remind hikers to be aware of the wilderness.

Thank you. That means so much. He was definitely adventurous, but he made a poor decision in pushing his limits that day which unfortunately cost him his life. I always encourage others to enjoy our beautiful mountains and hike smart so you can come home safely to your family. I’m sorry for the loss of your brother Sean. That’s so beautiful you all keep him alive in your hearts because even if the days were short on this earth, the love in your heart always remains. @@GetmeouttahereErik

I'm still calling the other mountain Squaw Peak. That's what it was when I lived there and that's what it will stay.

I hiked it this morning. Beautiful. The other mountain is pronounced pie-estawa peak, not pee-estawa peak, and it's a difficult hike as well because about 80% of the trail is stairs. A really good thigh workout.. Good video!

Thanks, I learned that from the locals afterwards and did a video/hike to the top of Piestewa too! I actually like the jagged summit of Piestewa a little more than Camelback.

it is 10/14/2023. im flying in from kansas city area on wed the 18th. i have attempted echo once on a previous visit not realizing there are 2 trails. I got maybe half to maybe 3/4 up echo and my legs just gave out and i turned around. i know cholla is reopened and may just try there on my trip, but part of me wants to attempt echo again, assuming i can find an open spot for parking!! plan to go friday early morning. cholla is my backup if i can't find a spot.

First off - KC bbq is the greatest bbq on the planet! Now that I have that out of the way, good luck on your attempt! All about how you feel, if you're in decent shape and been training up with some cardio don't shy away, you can do Echo Canyon. Just bring plenty of water and take your time, go at your own pace. Otherwise from what I've heard Cholla Trail is slightly easier to summit so if you just want to make it to the top and see the views of the Valley go for it! I actually haven't attempted the Cholla Trail so planning to make a follow-up hiking video of this route.

Yes on the BBQ. A gentleman I sat next to in my flight said Memphis BBQ gives KC BBQ a good battle.
