@@TobyVisuals808 Thank you that makes me feel better! Your video is great because I feel like it represents what Crawler's Ledge is really like. A lot of the videos are done with cameras or camera angles that make it look absolutely terrifying. Love your packing list video too! We are only camping one night. Not bringing a "stove" so still trying to figure out food. lol.

Yes! It was amazing! Very tough but amazing!! Don’t be scared. It will be fine. Not too bad just take it slow. I think Crawlers Ledge is a bit over exaggerated. There are more dangerous areas. I thought the area downhill right before Crawlers was more dangerous.

Great Video ! Having hiked this trail 5 times over the past 20 years I can honestly say that the experience is like no other. This year we decided to Kayak the Nepali Coast and stay at Kalalau Beach for 2 nights to break up the 18 mile ocean kayak voyage. Kayaking to Kalalau is much easier then hiking the trail. The hardest thing about planning to do this hike is getting one of the permits !

Hiked in for a week in 1973, hemmo the clothes after Hanakapai...no permits in those days, just go. Swam around the pali to the hidden beach where the filmed King Kong. nobody there in those days, goat hunters would come in on the weekends but the weekdays were real quiet.

I hiked this trail in 1971. No permits, no parking lot, few people. Camped on the beach and long horn steers moseyed past the tent early in the morning. I think I prefer it as it was.

Thank you for this man, I hiked into Kalalau Valley over ten times from the 60's thru the 90's. (The Taylor Camp days.) Watching this video brought back so may good times. It is reassuring to see that it is still as beautiful as I remember it. I subscribed and liked and am looking forward to watching your other videos. My other favourite Hawaiian hike was into Haleakala Crater. It is said that there are three stages to any great adventure: planning it, doing it and then remembering it afterwards, I am in the third stage now, but it is a good one. The first two can be challenging, but you need to complete them in order to have those great memories for the rest of your life. Go for it.

I ran/hiked this trail for the first time when I was 14. There are a couple sections that can be absolutely horrific if you get caught in a storm, like seriously treacherous. I have done a LOT of sketchy climbs and Crawlers ledge in a torrential downpour, literally jumping/climbing over mini flash floods was definitely top three. We always hike in and out in one day so we did not have the supplies to stay overnight. However, if the trail is dry, it really isn't bad. There isn't anything truly technical. We only hike this in June, July, or August to maximize the probability of getting a good weather window. Additionally, I prefer that calmer ocean and better visibility for spearfishing during these months. If your son is confident on his feet and you have a good weather window, go for it. If you have doubts and the weather in poor, do not. If anything you can climb to the first beach and possibly up to Hanakapi'ai Falls. It is around 9 miles roundtrip, verses the 22 to get to Kalalau and back. Could be kind of a test to see how he handles the terrain.

@TobyVisuals808

Aloha Sammy. Permits are available here: camping.ehawaii.gov/camping/all,details,1692.html I stayed 2 nights and did the full trail, 12 miles all the way to Kalalau on the first day. The second night I spend at the Hanakoa campsite. As for campsite, you will find designated campsites at Kalalau Beach and Hanakoa with some not so great maintained restrooms. While the Kalalau Trail is (usually) open to the public year round, there are better times to visit and hike this north shore trail than others. The best time to hike into Kalalau Valley is first thing in the morning during the summer months (May to Oct.) when the trail is dry, in decent condition, and you have more daylight hours. Always make sure to check the forecast before leaving since there is no cell service along the Napali Coast. Also I recommend you join the Kalalau Trail FB Group for great information. Enjoy!

Reaching out to anyone who hiked this in the 80's or before then. I did this in 1985 with the Sierra Club. I don't remember Crawlers ledge..ie, that part of the trail had no name that I remember. That part of the trail was narrow, but I didn't see it the way it is now. I am afraid of heights, so I know I would have remembered this. Additionally, the water crossings were not as scary as they look now. Perhaps this is because back then the island was suffering from a drought. The part called crawlers ledge now looks terrifying! Any input here?

I have ran/hiked the entire Kalalau trail in one day with my dad six times in the last 15 or so years. We only go in June, July, or August. Water filters and camelbacks are a must. This last time we were able to swim around the cliffs at the end to get to Honopu beach. I do not recommend this because there is a long shore rip that can be deadly without fins. We packed fins this last time because we have always wanted to get around the end, and conditions were just right. You could NOT get back to Kalalau beach without fins and with any sort of swell or strong current. This is without a doubt my favorite hike on earth. It is truly spectacular! It can be done in one day, however, you need to pack very light and be in near marathon shape. No hiking boots, just trail runners or running shoes. I literally destroy a pair of shoes each time I do this. Additionally, heavy rain can really slow you down and make it incredibly difficult to get in and out in one day. When I was younger we never would buy the permits because we would never camp. We actually got to know the trail workers. One time when the park rangers tried to give us citations, because they assumed we were going to camp, the workers actually vouched for us because we met them two years earlier. Pretty funny encounter. Now they crack down hard and will give you a citation no matter what. This was before the big floods and all the trail and parking changes.
