Hi J! I fell in love with Kauai the first time I vacationed there in 1984. The last time I was on Kauai was in 2003, but we're currently planning another trip there next summer (2023). I couldn't agree more with your favorite snorkling spot. I LOVE snorkling at Tunnels Beach and watching the sunset over Bali Hai Peak from the beach. And the Kalalau Trail hike, while a little strenuous, is absolutely a definite must-do! As you've indicated, bring PLENTY of water! There is one thing you hadn't mentioned, and will most likely be necessary for those of us taking the 20+ hour trip (including layovers) from the east coast on the mainland, with a 6-hour time difference - a jet-lag adjustment day. We're planning to just take it easy the day after we arrive, and then start into the hikes, kayaking, and other more physical activities the day after. As for Hanakapi'ai Beach (at the end of the 2-mile portion of the Kalalau Trail), I've seen all of the "recently-posted" (since around the 1990s) signs for dangerous surf and those who've drowned there, and I agree that people should be VERY careful there. But when I was there in '84, before there were ANY signs indicating these dangers, I found the waves there to be absolutely PERFECT for body surfing! I've never body surfed as well or as far as I could in the waves there on Kahakapi'ai beach, which I could frequently ride up onto nearly dry sand on the beach each time. Yes, to have such great waves, the undertow IS very strong, and I would only do this in the summer time, of course, and with great caution and respect for the conditions. I don't recommend that in the wintertime.

North vs. South should be determined by the time of year. NorthShore swimming and snorkeling is dangerous if not impossible during “winter” months. In that case I would recommend swimming/snorkeling from south shore around Poipu/Koloa/Salt Pond. I would also STRONGLY recommend that you NEVER go to Queen’s Bath. You can enjoy this view from above at the golf course without putting your life at risk of being washed off the rocks. The ocean can be a wild and unpredictable force. Respect it or regret it. Aloha to ALL 🌺

We went to Maui for 4th of July weekend in 2019 and the water was rough I thought we picked a good time but it wasn’t. 😕 we had a blast don’t get me wrong, but as you said, the ocean is unpredictable! And we stayed at Ka’anapali Beach Hotel. What months would you recommend for least amount of rain and calmer ocean waves in Kauai? We would be staying either Kauai Shores or Koloa Landing. We love the ocean over pools. Thanks in advance.
@Sunshinemakesmehappy808

@@jessicam522 both of those places are in the SouthShore of Kauai. That part of the island is better in winter months. I think you picked a good time to go to Maui but you got a good deal because that location is not good in summer. In summer you need to go to NorthShore.

Fantastic summary. We’ve been twice and will be back in a year. Koloa is such a beautiful little town in the south. We prefer staying in the Princeville area and doing day trips when we feel the need. In my opinion, we could easily spend two weeks and barely ever leave Hanalei/Tunnels. Only exception would be the hike at Waimea Canyon. Absolutely beautiful. Again, great job!

@@YourHostJ We're not really campers...doesn't mean we need 5 star accommodations but we've had really good luck with condos. One other thing I forgot - since we like staying in the Princeville area, we typically make a LONG day of it and go to Polihale after Waimea Canyon. Just awesome to relax in the tide pools after the hike. Makes for a long day but it's so worth it!

@@kylehawkins2031 They have the plantation style homes in Waimea that are super beautiful and nice to stay in if you want to get up early and hike. I was thinking about adding Polihale in my itinerary, but not everyone has the car for it. Rental companies typically warn you from going there if you have a regular sedan. But yes - I love chilling on that beach of hitting up the Canyon!

@YourHostJ 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pamela! It is ambitious, but if overwhelming you can pick and choose what you'd like to do. You're also right in saying things depend on traffic because, as I'm sure you are aware, the traffic these days on this entire island 😳😂 Itinerary also depends on weather too. When we first visited the island back in 2014 - we did so much and I was 5-6 months pregnant, but there was a lot less traffic and we were lucky with the weather. As you can see in the comments below many people want to add things to the itinerary! So even if I put together a 1 month itinerary - I don't know if you'd still be able to truly explore everything the island has to offer. Thanks so much for watching and your input. Are you a longtime resident of the island?

Hey William! Thanks so much for watching! I thought about the whale watching - but since that's seasonal - I left it out. The heli ride is amazing - but doesn't fit everyones budget so left that out as well. At least with the cost of the boat - you get food/drinks included. I think we are all missing traveling. We were bummed we couldn't even visit another island during the holidays because - at that time - we would've had to quarantine for 10 days when we got back to Kauai - which wouldn't work with our schedules. Now that school has started back up - we won't have a traveling opportunity for a while. But - can't complain where we are "stuck". Thanks again for watching!

Great video! I’ve been watching a lot of your videos because I want to plan a trip in May of this year. I had quite a few questions if you’d be okay with answering(: (or if anyone wants to answer, I’d love all the advice)! 1. I am looking at renting a car, but I am 19. I heard that you can rent at 18 on Turo, but I wasn’t sure if this was true. If it is, there a cars that allow unlimited miles to be driven and cars that allow a certain amount before they start charging per mile. I found a car with 7 days (that’s how long our trip will be) for a great price but the miles are limited to 2,100. Do you think we would go over that mileage amount during 7 days? We want to be outside and definitely explore, but I’m guessing we’d do a lot of hiking, and I’m not sure how many miles everything will add up to when driving to certain areas. Do you think I should just play it safe and pay extra for the cars with unlimited miles? 2. I’m trying to figure out how much this trip will cost for two adults. Do you happen to have an estimate on how much in total we would spend on food for 7 days (between the both of us together)? Also, is gas super expensive there? 3. Do a lot of the hiking places/sight seeing/waterfalls cost money, admission wise? 4. We want to go snorkeling, and I’ve seen places that you can reserve and it’s about $100 per person- $200 total. Are these the only options for snorkeling? You mentioned renting snorkeling gear, but I wasn’t sure if that meant that we should rent it for the reservation, or rent it to snorkel any time, any where? 5. What are your thoughts on the resorts? Do you think they’re worth it? 7 days in a resort is around $2.5-$3.5k depending on where you go (from what I’ve seen). We kind of want the “resort experience” but we also want to spend most of our time exploring the island. I just don’t know if we should cut costs and find a cheaper place, or just go for the “resort experience” because the resorts really are beautiful- but I don’t think we’d spend much time there aside from sleeping. 6. Would the Hilton Garden Bay be a good place to stay to avoid the gate closing? I know absolutely nothing about where things are yet. Sorry for all the questions lol. Thank you, and great video!!

Great post! I have a house in Wainiha and spend a lot of time on the island. Tunnels Beach is the best! Three other things I would add. While in Koke'e State Park there are a couple great out and back trails that go about 2-3 miles down the mountain with fantastic views of the Napali coast, the Awa'awapuhi and Nu'alolo trails. There is a cliff trail that connects the two if you want to do a 10 mile or so loop. The trails are moderate to difficult so you need to be in pretty good shape. In Lihue, Kalapaki Beach is a nice place to swim or paddle board with Duke's restaurant right there for lunch or dinner with live music. If you're on the west end the Friday Hanapepe Arts night is a fun place to browse the galleries housed by local artists and get some good street food. Love your information, keep up the good work!

Hey Scott! I LOVE the Awa'awapuhi trail! It's breathtaking! But, with only 7 days for this itinerary, it's hard to squeeze in so many activities. Thanks for all the great tips and suggestions! We'll be visiting in January and this was super helpful. For the Na'Pali Coast boat tours, how rough is the water? I get seasick but really don't want to miss out on the epic views.

Hey Riana! January can still have pretty rough waters, but I'd try everything I could to take the boat tour. Does dramamine work for you? My brother gets very sea sick as well, but that always does the trick. I'd also look at the surf report for the time you are here (obviously when it's closer to your dates) and see how the water is looking and maybe try and book on a calmer, less windy day? Thanks so much for watching and I hope you love your time on the island next month!

Hi Claire! To be honest - at least in Kauai - I think the tourist stigma has died down a lot. There was a lot of - I guess you could call it - anger in the early stages of everything. But, I think as long as you follow the rules and are respectful - it's fine. I can't comment how the other islands are. I guess that would be my only tip. I've only seen locals get really upset when someone isn't wearing a mask, etc. We've already been through so much with shutting down and everybody wants to get back to semi-normal quickly - like the rest of the world 😂 Thanks so much for watching ❤️

Great informative video. My husband and I plan to go for a month Feb. 2022. Thinking of staying on south shore but need advice on a good condo. Can you suggest something. There are so many VRBO’s. Should I book thru that or go thru a travel agent??

Hi Sharon! I'd suggest checking out VRBO or an Airbnb. Especially since you're staying for a month you'll want to have more space, a kitchen, etc. I don't have any particular condos in mind, but when I search for a place to stay, I try to stick to one with good reviews and I also read through all the reviews to see if there are any concerns mentioned from other guests. I wouldn't use a travel agent and just book directly. Thanks for watching! ❤️

Wow that's awesome and really good advice I've been thinking about Kauai Hawaii, I've been to Oahu, about 9 times, first with my parents as a child and 3 times with my wife, daughter and my mother-in-law. Like you I plan every single move I make, from the excursions as far as going to ATV riding trip to the beach Sea Life Park luau going shopping downtown the restaurants I eat at Roy's Rocky's near the Hilton Hawaiian village dukes and a few others that I might stumble upon tropics is located in the Hilton Hawaiian village is normally where I stay it fits like a love everything I want is close by but I've been very interested in visiting Kauai Hawaii it's so beautiful and it seems like it's not as crowded it seems that time seems to move a little slower but still the great benefits of being in Hawaii thanks for all your advice especially the thing about staying in Princeton as opposed to the other town you mentioned, I normally fly out of San Antonio Texas with the connecting fine in Phoenix or LAX so I'm looking at about an 8-hour travel my flights are more expensive because of this so I don't get to visit Hawaii as much as I would like to I don't be mean to be disrespectful but I think you're very pretty and just wanted to compliment you on your appearance, thanks again for your help I think I'm going to fly into Kauai and spend 4 to 5 days there and finish my trip in Oahu just has a force of habit spend another 4 days in Honolulu I just love the rat race the downtown on a beach and actually enjoy the crowds just people having fun

I had a trip planned last year that I had to cancel and am hoping to rebook in March. I had a similar itinerary mapped out (was planning 8 days - 4 in the North Shore and 4 in the South) Is it worth it to go out to Polihale while in the South - or should I use that time for more hiking in Waimea?
@YourHostJ

Hi Jay! That's a tough one - Polihale is beautiful, but Waimea is pretty epic when it comes to hiking. Love the colors you'll see along the trails. You might be able to squeeze in both? @YourHostJ
@YourHostJ 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Devonnah! If you want to save money somewhere - I'd definitely recommend cooking some of your meals instead of eating out. Eating out is definitely expensive and we never do unless it's a special occasion. I'd say the more budget friendly places would be food trucks. I'd say maybe $10-$15 per person, per meal maybe? Obviously I am not sure how big of an appetite you or your group may have, but I think that's a decent range to count on for the average meal. Definitely can spend much more if you go to fancier places. Car rental - if you shop locally - you can get in the $70/day range. If you go with a big corporation - I'd say more like $100/day. For the locals listings - check out this facebook page facebook.com/groups/171126931598521/?ref=share It's a public group that is for locals to rent out their cars. Definitely much more affordable and you avoid fees associated with renting through turo or the big guys. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! ❤️
