Rich races with himself up a nine and a half percent grade on three different pedal powered vehicles: an ICE VTX recumbent trike, a carbon fiber Calfee Tetra Pro and a vintage 1966 Frejus Super Corsa.

For what it's worth -one advantage of a trike going up a very steep climb is that you can stop and resume pedaling at any time, where as on a bike stopping usually means walking the rest of the way.

The technique I use is : go sideways on the road, not uphill, by the time you get to the other side you are in the saddle and feet on the pedals, now turn downhill hitting the brakes gently as you clip in, then make a u-turn and go uphill. It does take some slow bike skill handling but most riders can do it.

Nice video and the way you did the split screen. Now, to be fair, LOL, you'll have to do a "like" video on the flat and then the downhill. We "bent" riders know the "wedgies" will pass us on the hill and we warn them to watch out on the downhill. The flat can go either way. Thanks for a fun comparison.

Thanks, Jim! We were thinking of doing a downhill comparison video, but on the hill in this video the downhill would be over so quickly, we wouldn't have much of a video, and I don't know if there would be enough time for the trike to really shine in comparison. Thinking about it now, I do know of a long downhill that runs for maybe a mile. Maybe we can do a roll down test there. Stay tuned! :)

Kudos for another great and informative test. I see you earnestly gutting it out on your trike, however, and it just looks sooooo hard. Your cadence seems much slower than I would have expected. I wonder if using a lower gear with a higher cadence on the trike would have been both easier and faster. I don't have a trike, but on my recumbent bike, that's the ONLY way I can go up steep inclines.

Hi John and thanks for watching! After a few years of riding the trike up hills, I can say while it's not a great climber, it really does depend on the grade of the hill. I agree that on the two-wheelers, you need a high cadence to get up those steep hills. You can muscle it up a bit more on the trikes (but why should you?) I think I had the trike in my lowest gear for this video, so that was as fast as I could spin. :)

I think your gearing is not adapted for climbing with the vtx, you should go higher rpm's

I wonder what will happen when climbing gets steeper, like 20 degree and 40 degree. I think at steeper sections, the road bike will win until it gets too steep to balance where trike will be a better choice.p

Hi- what is the gearing on the VTX?

Hey, John! The small front chain ring is a 30 and the low gear on the cassette is a 38. That's the gearing I used at the steepest part of the hill. I probably could have used a little higher gear.

@@bikestrikesrazors I thought that was NorCal. Looked like my neighborhood in the Bay Area. How would the recumbent be climbing Mr. Diablo? How stiff in the bumps. I have a Roubaix that is pretty comfortable right now but, at 67, my hands start getting numb now.

@@charlesharper9546 Hi Charles. We just took the trikes up Diablo for the first time. The only problem was that it took twice as long to get up as it did on the road bikes. The Roubaix is a nice bike! I had some hand numbness issues on my CSi and I got a shorter stem and raised the bars a bit. Took a good deal of pressure off my hands.

I think that if any trike were lighter, and if it had a stiffer boom, you'd see it climbing better. From what I've heard of the Bacchetta Carbon Trike 2.0, it weighs basically the same thing as the ICE VTX and doesn't have a stiffer boom (and looks to be a bit less aero) so I doubt that particular trike would climb any faster.
