My Hilleberg Soulo Tent - Standing strong in violent Storm Force Winds - It was so windy that I could barely stand up so I thought it would be some fun measuring the wind speed with my Kestrel 1000 wind meter and the performance of the Hilleberg Soulo. No guessing or estimations, just the facts and then my conclusion - Is the Hilleberg Soulo worth the money and good for these type of conditions?
Oh before I forget - I also discuss performance of the MSR Reactor Stove and time it to boil 1 later of water. Additionally I give some comments on one of Rab's high performance lightweight sleeping bags.

Late to the party but I had to comment. My Soulo kept me warm, dry and safe during a storm which lasted about 30 hours in Iceland. Was on a cycle tour and was trying my best to get to a bus stop to avoid the coming storm but alas had to stop due to the bike braking down in the middle of nowhere. Sought out the best shelter I could find which wasn't much as the landscape is very exposed here. Pitched my tent and got myself as prepared as I could. Wind and rain came blasting and lasted throughout the evening, night and on to the following morning. Which was when I got my first continuous sleep for more than one hour. Was able to cook simple meals, read my book sleep whenever the wind noise wasn't overbearing everything else and was dry, warm and safe throughout the storm. Woke up the morning the storm had passed to the first cars driving by the road where I had made camp. Was a Search and Rescue volunteers (not looking for me as I was perfectly safe and in contact with friends and family) which were bringing some emergency equipment to be able to bring electricity back on to the town I had left almost three days prior. Got a ride from them on their way back as my bike was still broken and I had not been able to fix it properly. All in all I spent 36 hours with the vast majority of that time inside the tent. Only going outside to answer the call of nature, check on the tent and get some water when needed from the river close by. Later on I found out that a nearby weather station recorded wind gusts of over 80mph and the constant wind was 62mph. I dont know the exact force of the wind where I was pitched but I don't think it was far off. Tent came through without any damage and is still providing me with a safe shelter on my bike tours here in Iceland.

Hi thank you for this detailed comment regarding your adventures in Iceland in your Soulo. I really enjoy hearing of this experience. I have been in Iceland and appreciate how windy it can be there and also how long the serious bad weather can last. When a tent protects you in extreme conditions like this you really appreciate it and become very loyal to the brand. 60 to 80 mph winds will destroy 99 percent of tents but not Hilleberg Soulos. I measured 60mph here in this video and I am sure that there were gusts of 70 or 75... The tent took it no problem so was super impressed. The construction, materials and design make such a difference. I hope that you are getting out camping lots. ATB Tom

What I particularly like about the Soulo is it's gradual method of pitching and de-rigging, from the ground up with everything properly anchored, rather than than slightly apprehensive moment of 'flying' the tent with the last extension of the pole. I know it seems expensive but if you are in exposed spots or camping very remotely for extended periods of time you can't put a price on a safe and quality night's sleep. Another good video. In the conditions I think you did an amazing job with the quality of the video- many thanks.

Hi Derek, thank you for your input. For me too, I place such a high value on being able to pitch the Soulo with a massive grin on my face in challenging conditions. It is just so easy. I have bent poles in all my inner first pitching tents trying to set up or take down the tent. The attention to detail and quality is fantastic. Even down to the Vectran guy line being used in the pole bags which are also made from the high quality and most expensive fabrics, not only the tent.. Yes filming was a challenge for sure but you got to make the effort if you want to try and bring real content to your viewers. ATB and thanks for your comments on my other videos too. Tom

Hi Pete, sorry for the late reply sometimes comments on KZfaq get missed! yeah its hard but worth it to film in these conditions. I missed taking a shot showing me with the wind meter in my hand and how horizontal I had to stand bracing against the wind and walking around. I nearly got blown onto the tent ha ha. But we all learn and try to improve what we do and I won't miss a shot like that again and you can see from my most recent upload.... All the best. Tom

Crikey! I have a Soulo but even I was amazed that it was ok with that wind speed! Great to see videos like this as it will give me even more confidence if I'm ever out in such harsh conditions. I mostly carry far more lightweight shelters (MLD Duomid or Tarptent Stratospire) on most of my trips but got my Soulo for when the weather might be particularly challenging. Thanks for posting this.

Hi David thank you for your comments - To be honest it took me a couple of go s to build up confidence in the tent as it is very noisy in high winds. Great video Tom. The wind speed was no problem from the Soulo, they're as strong as houses. It tends to sound a lot worse than it is when you're inside it but when you get out and actually check it, they barely look like they're moving in even the strongest of winds. You're spot on about holding their value, its very important and I said about it too in my review video 👍 Great video again Tom, really well put together and fantastic sound quality.

In all honesty, it is doing what any half-decent tent should do but, sadly, few seem to. I have a Terra Nova Ultra Quasar which is getting a little long in the tooth... this has persuaded me to look at Hileberg - maybe the Akto. Thanks so much for filming and posting.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick thank you for watching and commenting. I also had an Ultra Quasar but many years ago. Terra Nova still make great tents but I now prefer outer first pitching. There is a big difference between the Akto and Quasar particularly in interior space. The geodesic structure of the Quasar too makes it much less flappy in winds and more resistant to snow loads than the Akto. The Akto is much lighter with great fabrics and construction but definite trade offs from the Quasar...Lying down space is good but moving around and organising gear is difficult. If you are NOT looking at reducing weight then the Hilleberg Tarra is your closest option. ATB its not an easy choice.. Tom.
@pleatedskirt18
@pleatedskirt18 2 жыл бұрын
@@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks. I shall look at all the above - one of my remaining local shops has a selection from time to time. Weight isn't the major deciding factor as longer trips are becoming less frequent due to me not liking to leave the dog for too long! Her claws wouldn't be a good idea in a tent... any tent! I can cope with the weight for a night or 2 regardless of the weather, and for longer trips, I can reduce weight elsewhere. Thank you again, and keep up the good work.

Great video, you do seem to enjoy torture testing your tents and I love watching the videos of them in some pretty interesting weather. Just think they are going to release a black label verson of this bad boy in 2021. 10 mm poles with double poling an option, upgraded Y pegs and their keron 1800 fabric. It looks a pretty robust beast on paper and it no doubt will be if the red label soulo is anything to go by.

I was not even at 400m and the steady wind was nearly 60mph.. thanks why I personally choose the strongest tent I am fit to carry so if I can shed 400g from my body weight I thing I will get the black label and see what I can get the wind speed up too.... Another great video, thanks for sharing Tom. I have a question regarding guy lines on the Soulo. I note that each pole has two guy lines and yet all videos that I have seen show the demonstrator using just one peg for both lines. I was wondering if offsetting the guy lines slightly by maybe 20 or 30 degrees and using two pegs would give more stability to the poles or less. I am not a physics scientist but if you think about sticking a walking pole into the ground and attaching 4 guy lines to the top, more stability would be given by having the lines 90 degrees apart, rather than having them closer together.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Madcat another good one... I always just secured the two pole guys to the one peg and found that effective up to 60mph winds.... Again I get what you are saying and think it would work.. It just means extra pegs which all adds to the weight.. Admittedly I will bring extra pegs anyway for harsh conditions.. The walking pole thing will improve the guy angles for the top guy but how do you secure the walking pole.. Its all ok in theory but too complicated for me in really...My red label Soulo took 60mph winds no problem with standard guy ing.. My black label was out in 80mph winds close by and also no problem with the short pole over the top and standard guying.. Hope this helps.. Tom

Although the foot of the Soulo is narrower perhaps the overall shape is such that it doesn’t much matter which direction the wind comes from? I wonder whether tunnel tents are less sturdy if the wind shifts to the side?
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, Yes I totally agree. Certainly inside there is enough room to have your head at either end. Tunnel tents have a reputation for not being as strong side on to the wind but that said most tents suffer from this weakness to some degree... ATB Tom

Hey of course you can use it year round. it's a four season tent but you need to bear this in mind.... 4 season tents need to seal out harsh weather. We had three from the store and a number of staff brought in their own stoves to share experience with other members of the team. It ended being a six or seven stove shoot out to see whose stove would boil a later of water the fastest. All I will say is that two other staff members purchases a reactor very soon after!!! Tom

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 The 1.7 liter Rector pot will house the burner and a 230 gr. gas canister. The 1.0 liter Reactor pot will house the burner and a 110 gr. gas canister. I believe Tom is using the 1.7 liter Reactor pot in the video. I have both. And, it all depends on how much water you need to boil, and/or how much room you have in your pack or how much weight you want to carry. Considering the size of pot you would like to have, remember that if you fill the pot to the brim, it will spill when the water comes to a rolling boil. The MSR Reactor boils water very fast, compared to other burners that will take forever if it’s a little windy. There is a reason why so many people use the Reactor on high altitude expeditions. Also, consider that the Reactor is a radiant burner. It doesn’t create an open flame, it radiates. This in my opinion also makes it better/safer to use as a heater when you’re cold. It’s also quite quiet in use compared to other burners. It’s a great piece of kit. ...... Ok, now I see that you’ve already purchased the Reactor. Discovered you KZfaq channel today 🤣. Oh well, maybe someone else will take advantage of the information 🤪

@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 2 жыл бұрын
Thats a tricky one.. The space inside a tent can depend on what you are familiar with or prepared to sacrifice. If the strength and sturdiness are most important then its hard to look past the Soulo. I am 6,1 and definitely don't find it coffin like as the dome shape has good height at both ends. If you use a footprint, under most conditions you have all the space of the vestibule as well and only have to zip up the inner to sleep. The Staika is great option for one person too but you are up to 4kg in weight and its not as strong. The Nammatj 2 is a great compromise as is the Unna (definitely not as strong) and the Jannu. So many choices, I have considered them all. Give Robert a shout from Rob Outdoor Prep. He is 6,4 and has owned a few Hillebergs including the Soulo.... ATB Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you for reply Tom. Yes I'll look at all these options but hope Soulo will suit. I've always generally used good 3 season tents. But I retired early and looking to spend extended time in the wild and want a good 4 season tent. Even for summer use, unless for a short trip with reasonable forecast. I'll let you know how I get on. Regards, Barrie.

I looked at the Allak which is like a 2 man version of the soulo. Probably better for me. I wonder what your thoughts are? Regards, Barrie

@@hamshanksproductions7161 Hi Barrie. The Allak is a nice tent but definitely not as strong as the Soulo. It just depends on your type of camping. There is a lot of tent volume to be supported by only 3 poles of 9mm. I would say its good for about 50mph winds IMO but any more that that It wouldn't be my choice. A superb tent for all but the harshest conditions... Tom

@@jla3772 no problem at all. I always store them folded and not crushed in their tent bags. Nit sure if that helps or not...
