I live in Hilo and I can completely see how you could be frustrated with the way they do things there. There is a lot of negligence in that hospital. Thank you for your time here it’s much appreciated! Hilo is very high school in the regards of it being cliquey. Embarrassing 🤦‍♀️

thank you. And as a Local Haole, It's a resident to a nonresident mentality. You are Right.

As someone who spent five nights of horror in said facility, I can attest to the fact that they hire cro- magnon orderlies ( 7 in a group)who scream like banshees at around 3 am without supervision. Had I not been tethered to a drain tube, I would have walked out . During daylight hours the place is just like any other hospital, professional and competent.

Sounds like Hilo, I’ve complained and told the Liason maybe if they were a little nicer they’d be able to keep doctors. This review confirms my complaint. I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Thank you for your honesty

That is so unfortunate. I don't really see them changing anything sadly. It wasn't an entirely bad place to work but some things were harder than anywhere else I've been in our travels for sure.

I did a month of PT internship in 1973 at Castle Memorial on Oahu and I was called a Haole by staff and patients alike.

That is not in itself a slur. People here use the term to refer to a caucasian person. It has no negative implications but can certainly be used negatively depending on intention of the person using the word.

As a nurse from the mainland who worked on Oahu in acute care, home health and hospice, it was challenging in many ways but I don’t regret my time there.

Excellent overview, like the true professional that you are. I do not understand why any locals would view a "traveler" differently. Medical professionals take the same oath "shall do no harm"...locals should be thankful to have travelers present assisting. You have a lovely family and it is a shame that folks on the islands would treat mainlanders differently. I also find it interesting hearing how medical facilities are "different" throughout our country. Great job....where to next?

If you live here you can't possibly be surprised. Its really got nothing to do with the medical profession. it is just another type of "TRIBALISM" . I'm better than you are. BS. as old as many kind. people just have fantasies about tropical Islands and exotic places. Living and Touristing are 2 totally different realities - but alas, that is true for anywhere.

When I visited the big island in 2007, I met a physical therapist who worked there. She gave me a tour of the hospital and the Rehab department. I am sure she has retired by now.

I appreciate your candor. Hopefully, the powers-that-be at that hospital will take this feedback seriously and make necessary changes.

I once had a hospital completly exclude all travel nurses from nurses week things. Even the unit potluck I was told to bring something (which I did) then told I wasn't allowed to eat anything 😶

Bad points aside, do you think this would be a good place for a med school grad to do a family medicine residency?

I'm not sure I'm a great person to ask. I think you can make the best of anything but I personally don't think I would want to do that.

From a patient’s perspective this hospital’s emergency room is rude to the patients often. Some staff don’t show much respect toward patients, especially if the patient has mental health issues or if they think the patient isn’t represented by family. I’ve filed a few complaints against some staff for threats, abuse, and outright rude behavior. I don’t normally complain but this hospital is turning me into an outright Karen. I’ve traveled as far as Waimea because the service at HMC can be so bad. If it was possible I’d never go to this hospital but unfortunately it is the nearest to where we live. With that said, it is a very busy place and some of the staff is really great. It’s luck of the draw on who you’ll get and how you’ll get treated. The guards are really nice though. Always a smile.

Sounds like Hilo maybe a little bitter towards travel nurses; with a thinking that you are 'taking' people's jobs. Either way very unprofessional and tacky of them.

So outdated, hopefully some of that money goes to updating software and better staffing

think he was being very kind........ wait for the Attitude you may get when you bring up a discrepancy. sorry to make it sound like there are not mostly good Intentioned workers, etc.... but the downsides are WAY OUT OF KILTER. The " Its' all GOOD " attitude is not acceptable. If you want all the fancy "bells and whistles" you desire; then you need to form a better work Ethic.
