The fact that he slayed the Demon Lord with a regular sword makes him that much more of a Hero in my opinion, he didn't win with borrowed power, he won with unbending resolve and sheer grit. Himmel was a real hero, just like how Heiter was a true priest, because he never once claimed to be a holy person who transcended the masses, he lied for good reasons, he had his vices, his fears and always acknowledged his shortcomings.

All party members are wholesome in their own way but Heiter is lowkey a good person despite being called Corrupted Priest a lot. He defended Frieren when people badmouthed her because she did not cry during Himmel's funeral. He quit drinking to live longer in order to see Fern becoming a strong mage. He changed the subject when Frieren and Eisen were starting to be uncomfortable with their different views on longevity. He made Eisen believe in Heaven so Eisen would no longer feel bad about abandoning his parents to their demise (and Eisen still prays before their graves on the present day). Hell, I think he drank a lot because he just wanted to enjoy the life the Goddess gave him to the fullest.

@@barcodeverifier9256 His existence and the mark he left in history is also proof that heroes by the name to Eisen, Heiter and Frieren did exist. He left his mark on the earth and he created a world where his friends names would live on with Frieren, even if only in memory. All those statues people built of Himmel weren't for him, it was for Frieren to remember that they really did exist and weren't some fairy tale people concocted to tell their children.

In today’s world your professor statement is true one is nothing without achievements and proof but I find it to be too harsh and almost makes living feel pointless. If all that matters is achieving to prove one’s usefulness and success it’s like living one’s to look good for others almost just to stroke one’s own ego. The hero’s comrades started their journey as a corrupt priest, a self loathing warrior and an emotionally stunted elf. His world was full of disarray, death and fear. But he persevered, he transformed Heiter into a beacon of virtue, gave Eisen his pride back, and made Frieren want to understand humanity. He made his world better every step of the way, stoping to help even the lowliest peasant for the most menial of tasks. He spent 10 years in the greatest journey of his and his comrades lives. He loved Frieren but never burdened her with that love because he knew she couldn’t love him back at the time. He made sure that even after his death, the world and his friends would have memories of him in the form of statues so they wouldn’t lose hope. He was funny, kind brave and loyal to a fault. Despite not being the hero of the prophecy, he destroyed the Demon King and his legions. And once he did all this, he simply came back home and lived a simple life, helping wherever he could. He died surrounded by the people he cared about the most. Himmel was a true Hero who saved the world not just in the grand scheme of things but with every single person he met and helped. Long may he be remembered.

I never really liked the trope of the holy sword that picks out the hero before, but this is genius. Here, we don't get the sword that, by fate or some such preordained way, correctly picks out the one individual that will be the hero; Instead, we get an individual who, despite the fact that this very sword rejects him, simply goes on. An individual who understands that you don't have to be a hero choosen by fate, to be a hero. In a sense, Himmel proved the sword wrong; however it may choose, it rejected someone who was so fitted, that even after getting rejected, they still succeeded anyway. What is a better way of showing that a character understands that they don't have to let their failures define them than them getting rejected by a literal holy sword, only for them to go on anyway. Truly genius writing...

I've seen it said elsewhere, but I really like the idea that the sword isn't actually meant to be pulled; In this case, it functions as a test to weed out the ones who'd quit after failing to pull it, since they wouldn't have the determination needed to save the world if not being able to pull a sword shattered their resolve.

Prequels only really work if there is not much info about the past to begin with, and no important event revealed for that period. Stories like Frieren's and Cowboy Bebop's relies heavily on important events told via flashback (and this happens multiple times) to drive the 'present' story forward. Netflix tried to do a prequel episode for the Cowboy Bebop live-action and it did not work (although you can argue that there are a lot of other things wrong with that turd). Also the way Frieren and Cowboy Bebop did flashbacks still leaves the viewer with room for imagination, for the smaller details. An example of when a prequel works perfectly: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse on the NES (or actually most games in that series as a whole). We knew from the first two games that the Belmont family has the duty to stop Dracula every 100 years and obviously there must be other Belmonts before and after Simon, but we did not know any of them or how their journey happened. It leaves perfect space for telling a different story for each Belmont starting with Trevor in Castlevania III - from which we learned how the Belmont clan was feared and expelled from society before they were needed to defeat Dracula, how Trevor met his comrades through his journey including Dracula's own son which was a good twist for a game at a time.

Beautiful choices of scene, music, and theme. As even if the world doesn't need you to be the one, you can still be *the one* . So don't regret anything, don't be lazy out and tell yourself you're worthless, because at the end of the day everyone were granted a purpose, and the journey is the answer for the question. *"Who are you?"*

the voice acting at 00:27 is just fantastic. The voice cracks and you can hear that this has left him shocked too. What he speaks afterwords kinda feels like he is assuring himself too and makes him feel more human. He sets himself a new goal to prove that even without the sword he is the hero

Himmel is a hero written right. Limited screentime, but his presence and impact lasts on a big scale. No exaggerated anything, no extras, no powerups, but a talented hero with sheer will, determination and kind heart, proving his worth, even with the weakest of weapons. Himmel is what a hero from the past, must be depicted as.

In the recent chapter of manga they explain more about the fake blade, apparently it was created by an excellent dwarf swordsmith as a test weapon, it really can be categorised as collector item, when the dwarf learned about it he tried to convince himmel to swap it with another sword but himmel refused it, citing that the sword real value isn't about it being fake or not

Himel was a hero, he used everything he had to be able to beat the demon lord and not borrowed power, just sheer grit, skill and leadership to coordinate veryone to their max potential. Heiter was a real priest, he always tried to help people whenever they got a chance, tried to give hope whenever possible and never claimed to have reached enlightenment or smt similar Eisen was also a real warrior, anyone who goes to battle without fear of death and/or injury is either completely crazy, an absolute fool or both. Yet he never ran away leaving his party members behind and he never shun away from risking his skin for their plans and always even when healing magic was blocked (remember when Himel told him to use himself as bait when Heiter was too hungover and couldn't use healing magic?) Frieren was also a true mage, despite being a complete hedge one as she doesn't reduce magic to just "killing weapon" and one that actually made it all possible with a "useless" flowerbed spell. All of them in one way or another could be called "fake" for one reason or another, the irony being that the exact characteristics which people would use to call them "fake" is what made them TRULY a hero, a priest, a warrior and a mage

Such a great, deep moment. Himmel was determined that he would become a true hero through his actions, not based on whether he could claim a special sword or not. Then, his replica would indeed be just as much a hero's sword as the "real thing", not because it was special or enchanted, but simply because it was *his* sword.

A man who work his way up to the top to become a hero. Not chosen, not talented, just pure will of wanting to be one. He needs no special sword or anything, if he work his way toward becoming a hero, the sword he wield will be looked as of the legendary sword itself.

i love this scene because it shows that himmel wasn’t the “chosen one” but was such a special and beautiful person anyway. he did so many great things for so many people because of who he was, not because of some destiny. in my head, when himmel failed to pull the sword out, he mightve felt a sort of nihilistic and melancholic lack of importance, but still knew that even if the world deemed him unspecial, that was okay and he was going to be satisfied with “only” doing everything he could

This edit made me emotional;; I love how Himmel the hero also embodies the beauty of his name (it's German for "heaven" from what I remembered) down to the blue colors in his design, nicely adding another layer to a conversation that pops up between Frieren, Himmel, Heiter and Eisen as they're saying prayers at the gravesite of Eisen's loved ones and remarking on the afterlife around episode 4: "But even if [heaven] doesn't exist, I believe it should." And Fern remarks after facing a certain demon that she thinks that Himmel believed in Frieren as much as Frieren says that people believed in him. And Himmel certainly embodies that belief truly becoming a hero and continuing to live as one in response to that classic Hero's Journey with the way he lived his life and what he would continue to leave behind many years after he passed away. What a lovely character.

It's really beautiful how this interpret himmel as a hero with a different points of view, "New generation will always romanticize heroes, until their original nature's eventually disappear" Those people didn't know how much himmel progressed even without a cheat item, they think he got his blessings and talents right from birth but it was wronged. He worked his way up through a thorny path much worst than other but eventually finished and crossed the line where most character would cheat through. He is not a hero no far from it. But he is indeed a "true" hero

I like to think that Freiren's entire story originated from the author wanting to write a fantasy story but thinking they couldn't write action scenes too well, so they had the idea to make a world where the biggest fight was already over, and then developed the rest of the idea from there, and made the continuing golden story that is Frieren.

Himmel really was a true hero even without that sword, and it’s not only because he defeated the demon king; he always helped ordinary people in their daily lives, doing what Eisen called “insignificant”. He also inspired others: he inspired Heiter to save Fern, and he inspired Frieren to appreciate the time she’s spent with others and to understand humanity more.

Imagine how scary it was for Himmel to be told that he was not the hero chosen by the world, yet still continue his journey. There is no prophecy, heroic item, or message guiding him. He knows that it’s not supposed to be his fate to kill the Demon Lord, yet he goes on to do it anyways.

This was honestly my favorite moment. you don’t have to be special to do great things, and you don’t need to be approved by others to be a good person. Himmel dispite being the named hero and unable to pull out the hero's sword didn't let that bring him down and dispite just being a human with a sword achieved his goal with his friends and that unshakeable resolve to do what was right in his eyes. Like thanos from marvel said: "the hardest choices require the strongest wills"
