Dio is one of the greatest metal vocalists of all time. I am a fan of the song Stargazer while he was part of the band Rainbow, and his solo work is also great. I would suggest Stargazer for his early work, and Last in Line for some of his later work.

The lyrics to this song were written by Dio, and a lot of the Ozzy era lyrics were written by Geezer Butler. Iommi writes a lot of the music, but is less involved with the lyrics.

Yeah, Dio usually wrote the lyrics he recorded with few exceptions for example when he recorded other peoples songs which was mainly in the very early days in his career.

Dio saved Sabbath in 1979 they were dead in the water. When Dio joined he gave them a new and fresh sound to compete with the likes of Judas Priest, Scorpions, AC/DC, Maiden and the rest. Plus Dio was a great song writer and a dependable front man. Dio should have been included in Sabbath's Hall of Shame induction but Sharon Osbourne insisted he not be included (BITCH).

You're one of my favorite reactors. I love listening to how you describe things and interpret them. This entire album is perfection straight through. Yes, amazing Iommi solo, a very soul piercing tune and mournful in a brilliant way. Those guys were freaking musical savants, a millennia from now they will be held in the same esteem as the classical greats from centuries past.

Spot on mate. Think that's why I've always preferred the early stuff with Ozzy because I'm way more into 70's stuff. Can't deny Dio is one hell of a singer though, perfect voice for 80's metal, possibly the best from that era

IMO, anyone who is a lover of classic rock/early metal, will have Dio in at least their top ten best vocalists, and many would put him in top five. And the competition in any list of the best male rock vocalists is FIERCE. He easily keeps company with early Robert Plant on the sheer power scale. His life and career were cut way too short, but his power at its peak was phenomenal. I did not discover him for myself until the last couple of years through reaction channels like yours. I had jumped off Black Sabbath as Ozzie got more and more strung out in the late 70’s, and never knew of Rainbow. KZfaq has been such a boon to me for discovering music I never would have found otherwise.

Yeah, I think the first contact with Black Sabbath plays a huge role in where one puts the different singers of Sabbath on the podest. 48 years old here, my first contact was Tony Martin-era "Tyr" album, and I fell in love with that Sabbath first. Sure enough I went to see them on their next tour - so I was a highly confused 18-year old (ah, yes, it's 30 years this year since I've seen Sabbath first live, yay!), but Dio had me from the very beginning of that show. So Ozzy was only the 3rd Sabbath singer I got to know, which gave me, of course, quite a different path. I've come to love them all, though, over time, and just view the eras as separate (although of course I also saw Tony Martin return, then the "Heaven & Hell" times, then Ozzy again... It's been quite a ride through those years, too...)

You describe things so well. Ozzy was kind of devastated when this album came out because he hadn't started his solo band yet. He was holed up in a hotel room taking drugs but finally got it together. Was wondering if you could react to Ozzys answer to Black Sabbaths first album without him, which by the way is good front to back.

Hi Syed I'm really glad you posted this video from the stream. When you compare Dio and Ozzy they are both legends, however if you polled music critics or better yet the top musicians in the hard rock heavy metal scene they would have Dio at the very top of the list were as Ozzy would barely crack the Top 10 for best singers. the godfather ronnie james dio brought out the musicality of sabbath, Tony Iomi's guitar sounds like a river flowing thru rock n roll heaven where our lord DIO resides, ronnie considered this his musical masterpiece, i bought 4 cassettes of this album, I think ronnie's lyrics tell us to question the establishment,"the world is full of kings n queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams" i loved the lyrics as i was forced into sunday school and church every sunday age 4-17, it was nuts to me as ronnie thought of catholosism, every song is worthy of cranking up on that album as well, my favorite children of the sea

Sabbath was always great but the original band got them into the HoF. But the Ronnie James Dio era is a solid 2nd (with lead singers Ian Gillian. Glen Hughes and Tony Martin taking turns with mostly excellent results). You are right about Riffs and Tony Iommi, he is the undisputed master of heavy riffs and is one of the top 10 guitarists ever, in any genre, for me and all the people I hung with back in the day. It boggles my mind how much they have influenced music and become pop culture immortals. Try also from the Dio era Sign of the Southern Cross, another epic Banger. Enjoy! 🎸

I would also check out the singers earlier group called Rainbow. "Stargazer" is the epic masterpiece. Definitely worth your time to check out. Has anyone told you about Nightwish? The way you approach music makes me think it would be unethical of me not to introduce you to them. Anything from the 2013 Wacken concert will blow your mind, I think you would have a deep appreciation for the way they compose their music, it’s very intelligent and very rich. I would suggest starting with Ghost Love Score, or Storytime, or Romanticide. From there no doubt the Nightwish army will come running to you and guide you the rest of the way!

You should check out Dio singing War Pigs with Sabbath, FAR BETTER. Ronnie James Dio is the GOAT and the Godfather of metal. Ronnie was the lyricist, not Tonni. This was Ronnies favorite song he wrote, and he wrote a LOT of them. Check out Dio with the band 'Rainbow', Ritchie Blackmores band following Deep Purple, he actually left DP TO form a band with Dio. Dio's solo band was phenomenal and when he got back with Sabbath as old dudes in the band 'Heaven and Hell', he was as great vocally and stage presence as when he was rocking with Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath, or Dio. You have a HUGE catalogue to check out of Ronnie James Dios work. Check out Rainbow, 'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977, greatest vocal and guitar performances!! Dio is always better LIVE.
