CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) discusses one of his favorite songs from Huey Lewis & the News, and then murders Paul Allen (Jared Leto) with an axe.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bret Easton Ellis's dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s is brought to the screen in this unsettling drama with blackly comic overtones. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy Wall Street financier, is pursuing his own lucrative career with his father's firm. Bateman is the prototypical yuppie, obsessed with success, fashion, and style. He is also a serial killer who murders, rapes, and mutilates both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or reason. Donald Kimble (Willem Dafoe), a police detective, questions Bateman about the disappearance of Paul Allen (Jared Leto), whom Patrick murdered several days earlier. As Kimble stays on Bateman's trail, Bateman's mask of studied, distant cool begins to fall apart. American Psycho also features Reese Witherspoon as Bateman's girlfriend, as well as Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny, and Guinevere Turner; the latter also co-authored the screenplay. Controversy followed the production from the start, when speculation that Leonardo Di Caprio would play Bateman sparked concerns that he would lure preteens to an R-rated movie. Di Caprio soon bowed out of the project, and original leading man Bale was reinstated. Later, a group of Toronto residents attempted to block filming in that city after Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo claimed that Ellis's novel inspired his murder spree.

You can tell by the way the axe just glistens and shines while resting elegantly upon the floor that you will die in style. The solid light birch handle gives it the perfect balance of style, sophistication, and masculinity while maintaining its function as a tool to tame the harshest of wildernesses. Empires have been built and destroyed with pieces like this.

The book is so much worse... I read it in highschool before the movie's release. The book's content resulted in my avoidance of the movie for a looooong time even though gore, violence, etc. had little impact on me in those days. I loved reading disturbing horror (still do, especially Junji Ito) and could handle blood, guts, and violence in film or television (now it depends on context). Yet despite my strong stomach this book made me feel *deeply* uncomfortable. The torture/death scenes were *beyond* disturbing and I _did not_ want to see them onscreen. Eventually I realized certain parts of the book couldn't be in a movie with an "R" rating, even considering America's comfort with gratuitous violence (no offense intended: I'm 'Merican myself). When I watched the movie I found it to be surprisingly hilarious! The onscreen violence and disturbing moments were nothin' compared to countless passages in the book (the sewer rat scene, the chainsaw torture while the woman stays conscious, cannibalism, the car battery hooked up to Christine, necrophilia... there's a lot more but I'll stop here). Bale was *amazing* in the film: menacing and funny at the same time, and also able to switch between the two in an instant. I'm glad his role wasn't written _or_ performed so he'd simply be a live version of the book's Bateman. Edited because: i duz spelin an Grammer realy reely gud.! 🙃

I think it’s universally accepted that Bale is a generational level actor, but when I heard that he ad-libbed that incredibly perfect goofy dance move into the scene.. I was just blown away. First off, try doing it in the mirror. Quick fact: You can’t. You’ll be able to do the motion, but it will look clunky. This guy just came outta nowhere with this and did it flawless lol. Fun fact: Paul Allen did not actually die. He just fell asleep and his head hit a conveniently placed ketchup packet that Bateman hit instead of him. You don’t get it though, he’s not actually a nerd about the music. This is rehearsed small talk for him, this is his imitation of how he thinks normal people have a conversation, down to picking the most main stream music he can. Batemen is supposed to represent someone who see’s and understand what the American dream is, and to appear like he has everything that would fulfill a person in life, but it’s all an act to hide how hollow/empty he is of emotion.

You like David Bowie? His early work was a little too psychedelic for my taste, but when Hunky Dory came out in '71, I think he really came into the mainstream, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a huge kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, and a more intelligent approach to songwriting that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Freddie Mercury and Gary Numan, but I think Bowie had a far more flamboyant , androgynous sense of style. In '72, Bowie released this, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spider From Mars, his most critically acclaimed album. I think his undisputed masterpieces are "Suffragette city" and "Starman." The songs are so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because they're not just about Bowie's alien alter ego, they're also iconic signature tunes in the world of glam rock!

I love how he covers his suit but doesn't mind dirtying his face. The face, the symbol of his humanity, can be sullied and stained without any care whatsoever, but the suit, the symbol of his social role, must be preserved. His colleagues wouldn't notice bloody hands or a bloody face, and if they did, they might even celebrate them, but a bloody suit is an affront to the order of things.

Fun fact: this scene was actually meant to end with the 2 friends going out in the rain to chop firewood, but Bale hated the comment Leto made about the chow so much he just decided to improvise and kill Leto without warning. It was eventually written into the story and the movie was renamed from ‘American Business Man’ to ‘American Psycho’. The more you know!

@@carlsworldofwisewords8907 I've both watched the movie and read the book to study his psychology. He's a fragile narcissist in my opinion, meaning he believes he is the best, and if anyone defies this belief, he gets so mad that he kills them. His life also completely revolves around what people think of him, which is laughable. I am well aware that it is his mentality, and I am merely laughing at this pathetic mentality.

You like Prince? His early work was a little too R&B for my taste, but when 1999 came out in '82, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a fusion of electronic funk-rock,and a strong theme of motivation, that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to both Michael Jackson and Madonna, but I think Prince had a more eclectic, ambitious, and whimsical sense and display of raw talent. In '84, Prince released this,Purple Rain, his definitive magnum opus album. I think one of his undisputed masterpieces is "Baby I'm a Star", a song so catchy and so joyous, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about self-empowerment and being rich on personality, it's also a clear statement of Prince being a truly confident and independent artist!
